After many requests, we have decided to bring back the French Omnimaga IRC channel, after it was abandoned in 2007. Since the french TI community hasn't been very active on IRC in the past 4 years, we were relunctant about restarting #omnimaga-fr at first. However, since the last few months, there have been an increase in french users on the forums, some of which have been using the current #omnimaga channel via OmnomIRC, so with the requests, we have decided to re-open #omnimaga-fr and the channel is already publicly logged by NetBot45, like #omnimaga .
In the future, there are possibilities that OmnomIRC will be usable with the French channel, if Netham45 manages to find time to update the shout box to allow switching between both channels via cookie-based settings. For now, you will need to use an IRC client like X-Chat, mIRC or Mibbit then Google information on how to connect to EFnet. Alternatively, you can attempt at using the Java chat link at the top of the shout box, then if you connect successfully, type the command /join #omnimaga-fr to open the channel.
Besides that, Netham45 also updated OmniURL shortener to support forum attachments and file archive downloads. So now here are examples on how links can be shortened (with the syntax in parenthesizes):
-Post: http://omniurl.tk/5221/87910 (Topic ID/Post ID)
-Attachment: http://omniurl.tk/a/5232/4376 (a/Topic ID/File ID)
-File info page: http://omniurl.tk/f/591 (f/Download ID)
-File download: http://omniurl.tk/d/591 (d/Download ID)

This is nice. With TI-bank being active and the large influx of french speaking users, I'm sure many people will find this useful. =)
-
Yep, can't wait to see how the French channel will be active. I find that it's a kinda great idea, since I seen some french conversations on the main channel.
-
Now I need to find a slogan+slogan acronym in French. In the english channel it's "Frienship Unity Caring Kindness". :P
-
I never noticed that acronym... :o
-
Yeah it just appears when you join the channel or at the top of the bar, if your IRC client is set to show channel topics. If you use OmnomIRC, you have very little chances to see it. But yeah Netham45 made up the slogan about 2 years ago. It was used in another of my channel then moved to #omnimaga back then. :P
-
I did see the slogan, I just didn't notice the acronym of it...
-
Oh ok lol ;D
Now to find a similar one but in French...
-
This is cool. Great update DJ. :)
-
Haha, I lol'd at the acronym ;D
I think it would be very hard to find a similar slogan in French, indeed.
Anyway, that's a great idea to bring back the French Omnimaga IRC channel. :)
I guess that more and more people will use it when kindermoumoute's Axe Parser tutorial will be released.

/me bangs his head against the table
I never noticed the acronym.
Anyway, this seems like a good idea, especially now with more French people here. The omniurl additions are going to be pretty useful too.
-
I am stupid... :P
any way, that is cool, btw, is this why Juju is now an op?
-
I never noticed that either... :P
Nice updates :)
Yunhua, I would presume so.
-
Juju and Genolo were potential new ops for a while. I haven't added Genolo yet, though, because he is less active lately.
-
Wow, i noticed the slogan before, but i never paid the acronym any attenion... /me feels like a moron for not noticing. :P
-
Lol it's ok. Few people would expect the F word to slip in such friendly acronym. :P
-
Yea, I think that's why myself and others missed it! XD
-

yeah, I was a bit repsonsible for this.... but DJ was also responsible :P ;D but actually, I don't mind (though I'm FRench) because I'm a bilingual, and my English will be improved! (still need to make efforts for the vocab, but I'm there ;) )
@ DJ: I know a lot of F words in french!! :-X Energumènes Non Colonisés et Utilisateurs Loyalement EtrangléS (to english speakers: even in FRench, it doesn't mean anything ;) ;D )
-
Your english is very good actually. If I did not see your location in your profile I would have taken a while before figuring out you are not english-native.
The only concern I have about the french channel is if it's used to ask ASM/BASIC questions, not a lot of people might be able to answer, and I myself don't program much anymore so I don't know Axe well, so I guess it might mostly be used for general calc/non calc chat :P
-
yeah I agree with you, non bilingual users (except kindermoumoute ;D ) will maybe abuse of the chatbox, but that would be an opportunity for Omnimaga to be opened to francophones. Actually I'm a bit disappointed because I'm learning British english, and most of the members are from US, and some words are different than others :/

Usually, only the spelling is different. There might be an extra u somewhere or an s instead of a z. Of course, there are still cases where the words are completely different.
-
yeah I figured it out with color and colour, as an example, but I still make the difference ;)
-
Well there are a lot of foreign users from Europe over here so hopefully they should be able to understand british english well. In my case I used to go on mostly british forums too (like TIMGUL) so I kinda got used to some words, but not all slang like "I reckon". There are also stuff like "bloody hell" :P
Also I noticed that some people like Qazz42 and ScoutDavid actually know french quite a bit, even if this is not their native language, so hopefully they might be able to participate a bit too. Just as long as they use the Randomness sub-forum for Randomness. :P
The funny thing is that I understand english better than France french to a certain extent. I think this is because of certain expressions being used and way of typing. This is why, for example, with some french people from France, almost all our discussions are in English.
-
yeah, let's give to Caesar what is to Caesar (bad translation from the french expression "Rendons à César ce qui est à César")
@ DJ: I don't understand what you mean by "I think this is because of certain expressions being used and way of typing."
"This is why, for example, with some french people from France, almost all our discussions are in English." as me, for example? ;D
-
Oh I meant in france, they use different idioms than in Québec. Example, "J'ai la flemme" is something I read often on french forums but since we never say this in Quebec I always forget what it means. Also over here we have different ways to express our emotions when we are angry. ;D
-
J'ai la flemme means you're too lazy to do it ;)
as little F words in fench?? ;D ;D
-
Ah ok
And yeah I meant some words like F style. In Quebec, they use varied forms of words used to define church objects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_French_profanity

Friendship
Unity
Caring
Kindness

Bad Netham45. :P
-
I'll find you acronyms tomorrow ;) does it have to be necessarily F words?? It's not that I want to become the FR version of Netham, but..... =p

I just got an image in my head of an overly-stereotypical french lobster, with like curled antenna and a bad accent, lol.
"Oui oui! Don't cook me!"

what is a curled antenna?? a bad english accent?? I had PASSED WITH MERIT result in the Cambridge PET (B1 certification)

I hope #omnimaga-fr will soon be usable in OmnomIRC, because "j'ai la flemme" to connect EFnet each time I want to chat. ;D
BTW : I love Canadian French because it's so different that my French (like saying "char" instead of "voiture", etc...) :)
rayquaza59> are you from SdZ ?
-
Yeah, not everyone wants to go on IRC only for #omnimaga-fr, especially when you have OmnomIRC directly on the webpage...
And am I wrong or only DJ and me are from Québec?

There was StephenD, but I havn't seen him in a couple years.

yes
[edit] I FOUND ONE!!! Société des Amis de L'Omni Présence Extraterrestre (has a strange sense in French, but technically it works...
-
Seems strange indeed... but works. It's hilarious. xD
I'll maybe try to come up with some ideas too... It's hard...
-
alright! Now I can practice my French! Remember, if my french is inadequate, do correct me :)

Yeah I would like that too. Also there's the fact that Wanadoo used to be used to host spambots and got banned from most IRC servers, and I remember other french hosts were blocked on EFnet server before. Not sure if that's the case anymore, though.Yeah, not everyone wants to go on IRC only for #omnimaga-fr, especially when you have OmnomIRC directly on the webpage...

There was StephenD, but I havn't seen him in a couple years.
Fallen Ghost from the old board too. He was working on a Starcraft 83+ clone. There used to be another Quebecer working on another clone much longer ago on MaxCoderz.
Seren, who was working on a GH clone last year, was also from Quebec, and I believe a UTI member last year too.
I also remember Solid Snake from the old board and MaxCoderz. He wasn't very active, though, but he posted on the very first Omnimaga forum that was hosted on yAronet back in 2004. I'M sure the posts are still there (just the board index is gone)

oh geez what they say write in this wiki page is not true :o! We, french teenagers, don't swear like that! :-X ;D
Quazz: you're bilingual ???
-
Oh that mostly applies to people in Quebec, but even then, there are some swear words in that page that were only used about 200 years ago.
Qazz isn't bilingual yet but he's learning french.
-
as many people here should do =p
no, just kidding, do learn French unless it is for professional reasons, or just because you're crazy ;D it is really hard, and it will become harder and harder in a few years, Quazz :p
-
Yeah sadly it's pretty hard to learn, especially the grammar. Many rules are like:
<Student> Hey teacher, why is the plural of this word written like this?
<Teacher> There's no reason why. It's just like this. You just have to remember this exception.
And there are OVER 9000 exceptions. There's also more gender stuff than in English and in some cases, the adjective is put after the name instead of after.
I often hear from people that learn french that it's not as hard to speak, though.
By the way if you notice the channel is often dead around this time of the day it's because most english users live in USA and are currently at school. :P
