Title: Omnimaga goes dark
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 18, 2010, 05:37:21 am
Unless your browser didn't update its cache when opening Omnimaga (again, CTRL+R or CTRL+F5 for people with fewer Internet knowledge :P), you obviously can now notice a drastic change in Omnimaga look. Yes, despite some similarities with before, the entire site theme was revamped! The banner was updated not long ago, now it's the layout turn. To fit the new banner, we have finally decided to go back to a darker forum theme like we had in 2005.

Like in 2005, we went for the unusual combination of a dark forum background, while still keeping the rest as light as possible. A combination that is so unusual that most forum softwares style sheets were not written to handle such theme (changing the text color on the dark areas will cause everything else to change too or vice-versa), thus, creating this new theme proved to be a major pain in the jello. Unlike our 2005 theme (see Archive.org cache, even if images won't load, you can still get an idea (http://web.archive.org/web/20051211063953/http://omnimaga.dyndns.org/)), this time, we couldn't do the "medium text color" compromise, where the entire site text is light enough to be seen on the background, but still dark enough to be seen everywhere else. The reason is that it just didn't fit and we would have been forced to keep the board div/tables to their original colors to make text easier to read, and on the old board, some people did not like this, since the contrast between the BG and the FG was way too high.

Sadly, due to issues with our current setup, we were unable to keep the old forum theme as an alternate choosable theme for people who liked it, so you will have to do with the darker theme. Fortunately, the navigation and text areas are still bright for the most part, so you should still remain comfortable with them.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy our new look, since it took quite a while to create. (http://www.omnimaga.org/images/rainbowsmiley.gif)

On another note, Super Star Hero, the cancelled action-RPG project for Windows that I worked on in 2008 has been finally released as it is in the archives, for people who want to try it or use some of the event codes in their own RM2K3 games. Once you look at the screenshots, you will discover from where that black face with red eyes and a blue helmet in our banner comes from ^^

The lack of an alternate "classic" theme makes me a sad panda.  :'( I can't decide what I think about the new theme yet.

Yeah the issue with keeping an alternate theme was that I was unable to fix all the errors that were caused. And by errors, I mean I locked myself out of the forums after choosing the old them as alternate one. Checked Google and all they said was to check your server config, which seemed absurd considering the theme worked before. To me it seems like it could be caused by the hackish way we got rid of some stuff in the banner. At one point we went close from getting it to work, but it was filled with bugs and glitches to the point where I told myself "fuck it, I give up on trying to keep multiple themes".

Coincidentially, TIMGUL admin tried to install new themes on his site the other night and also got serious issues. He finally had to switch back to default theme and idk if he ever got to fix the rest. It's definitively either SMF fault or just that SMF theme system is just too hard to debug. So that's really something out of my control. Either we completly forced a switch, like most site does, or we stuck with the old theme forever. :/

EDIT: Eeems also tried to install an alt theme here before (iPod touch-friendly) and it failed x.x. I think as soon as you use mods or edit the SMF code slightly, you're pretty much screwed.

Haha coincidentially I used to frequent a forum where some local memes said the forum was underwater, because they had a javascript that made a Kirby floating around everywhere when browsing the pages. If it wasn't for copying them, my lack of knowledge in scripting stuff and the fact I don't want to have such gimmicks on my board, I would be tempted to add something like this. Most likely a floating lobster :P

I kinda like light forum schemes personally, to be honest. But I also like darker ones as long as the areas to read are bright. I like dark themes like MaxCoderz, but after a very long while reading posts, my eyes starts to hurt x.x, so for Omnimaga I always make sure the main areas are bright. Dark themes often look pretty cool, though.

Very dark themes with no lighter parts are easier to get tired of than lighter themes, in my opinion.

Maxcoderz is a good example of a something that just was like wow. Don't get me wrong I like the all dark, but as someone said you just get tired of seeing it all the time. I think its a good idea to change some stuff every now and then if you have the time.

I personally prefered the red+beige MC theme. The Ikonboard they had back then was awesome too, altough it didn't fit MC theme well. My favourite board design they had was the first skin on their PHPBB.
