Title: Omnimaga now hiring new Coders of Tomorrow (programming team)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 28, 2011, 06:06:09 am
In the past year, the forum programming team members were pretty active for the most part and made a lot of releases together. As a result, we did not actively seek for new Coders of Tomorrow members for months, only adding a few here and there, when we received some applications or promoted anti-riot squad members to the team. However, in the last few weeks, activity from the Omnimaga team in general went lower and we lost an admin, in addition to another one going less active. We added two new ones beforehand, but they are in charge of the website for the most part.

As the TI community seems to be going through a period of transition in terms of departing and arriving calculator fans, the Omnimaga Coders of Tomorrow programming team is now starting to renew its team.
In other words, we're hiring new programmers for the (http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/omnimaga4/images/omnimodlogo.gif) position on Omnimaga.

Like last year, we will only accept calculator programmers, although in a few months, positions for computer game programmers might open too.

If anyone is interested in joining the programming team, you only have to meet the following conditions before you get hired:
-Have 100 posts
-Have been active posting for at least one month
-Have a good forum/IRC behaviour during that period
-Be involved in at least one of the following:
 *TI or Casio game programming
*TI or Casio game development tools (on calc or on the computer)
-Have a project under development (screenshots or topic needed).
-The language used to program games and tools doesn't matter.

As Omnimaga staff you get the following:
-The ability to upload your TI/Casio games/utility, PC games or own music in our staff downloads section. (ZIP files for calc/computer uploads, MP3/MIDI for music)
-You get sub-forums for each of your calculator game/utility, PC game/software or ROM hack projects.
-Global moderator priviledges (in case of an invasion or something)
-If you ever quit calculator programming (which we don't hope :P), you can still remain in the team as either PC game programmer or musician (providing you make your own music), providing you remain active on the forums.

Here are the responsibities as Omnimaga staff (to ensure they remain active):
-Have an active project (or releases) going on under the themes specified above.
-Keep a minimum of at least 10 posts within the last 30 days from September 1st to June 30st and 5 posts within the last 30 days from July 1st to August 31st.
-Checking your forum inbox, the staff/moderation section (which appears in red in the New Posts section) and your e-mail prior checking new posts, in case you get anything important.
-Moderation is on a volunteer basis, although it's recommended to help when those naughty spambots flock in. We recommend our regular members to use the Report to moderator links on each post if you find anything suspicious. :P

If you are willing to join the team, please PM one of the managers (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=17#team) on the forums. Your staff application will then be queued then processed (possibly after the first programming contest).

I don't think I'll volunteer. :P
But I do want to wish goof luck to those who will. :)

if this is enough to be a game project under developement
(http://209.85.48.18/7059/133/0/p1019677/Animated_Screenshot.gif)
then i'll join if you haven't got enough people joining. If there are enough, then I like to stay a 'normal' member.

Is that going to become a 3d game? Looks awesome.

Yup, If everything will work, that will become a first person shooter, and it's polygon based so it has more possibilities than raycasters (looking up, down...)

I'm just not sure if that will count becouse it's in very early development.

but anyway, i would only do this if there aren't enough people joining the team. If there are enough people joining, then older members with better projects should get the 'coder of tomorrow' title.

Bad luck :-(

I'm thinking I might apply this time around. I believe I can keep up a 10 post a month spree during school and a 5 post a month spree during the summer. Now that I have my Droid, that should be much easier.

Is there a deadline for applications, because I can really only be active in the evenings while I'm on vacation.

I think I'll apply.  I can usually get >100 posts a month (hopefully later in summer >200 per month) and I have 3 major projects I'm working on at the moment, and I've been a good boy the past month ;D (good thing it's only a month, though...)  And I have just above 100 posts.

I think I'm going to apply too. No harm in trying!

Can the project be comp related? I'll apply I just only have comp projects atm

EDIT:nvm I saw where it said in the first post. Too bad maybe I'll apply when they want comp programmers

Hmm I think I'll go for it this time.  I'm assuming that a contest entry counts a project.

I know ahead of time I'll have an inactive period starting mid-July lasting anywhere from a week to a month (road trip with family) but I'll be back from it eventually ;D

I would reapply if I knew for sure that I'll have time for this during school, unfortunately I don't think so. :(
But I do have some projects in store for this summer, might post about them soon.

I think that I don't will volunteer, because of school and other things (I'm also too new in this community and have only < 100 posts). The other thing is, that I'm German and don't understand everything so fast, maybe next year.

I'll definitely apply when comp programming comes up. Lol. But I don't have any calc stuff going atm, so no Coder Of Tomorrow for me, yet.   ;)

I'd join if there was comp programming included. Also I need to actually finish projects like Daemons. :P

As much as I would like to apply, I can't :(
My life is totally unpredictable, which makes that I can't be active sometimes for large periods of time.

Anyway, good luck to the ones applying !

Yeah I plan to open computer spots in the future, noticing the large amount of interest for computer stuff compared to a few years ago.

A few years ago, despite fighting to attract computer programmers around, when people moved from calc to computer programming, they would still stop posting here, while today, we got people like HOMER, Netham45, Eeems or ruler501 who hardly code for calcs anymore, yet still are active.

On a side note Deep Thought sent an application O.O

I never was very good at calc's but I'm alright at comp I think. I can't wait for you to open the comp positions

Quick question: how many slots are currently available?
My guess is that it depends what they decide is needed. I doubt it is a set number
Title: Re: Omnimaga now hiring new Coders of Tomorrow (programming team)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 28, 2011, 02:40:11 pm
There is generally no set number, but it often depends of how many members are regularly active. We try to make sure the online list isn't always 100% staff and 1 or 2 member like on the old forums sometimes. The highest we ever went to was 26 at once, back in late 2006, but only like 6 were active at a time.

Hmm does a remnant of a textroll in a 2.55MP "simulation" (pretty much making it look like the calc's freking out after ~10 problems in the homescreen) count?
It gets to "You wouldn't get this from" then the screen goes blank and static after that...

Hehe, I would love to join, but like jimbauwens and others, I am unable to commit to time.
(Unless you can create a CoT Summer Edition :P)/me shudders at the upcoming Junior year

Also, I'm more of a calc utilities programmer (haven't gotten any game idea sparks, nor any skills to create good games), and recently towards PC programming.

If there was a "sub-CoT" staff position, I would join instantly.

Well so far I got 4 applications in my inbox (excluding Deep Thought's prank of course), and last November we had 7 or 8 I think, which were all received in a few hours. :P However a few months before we announced application spots and only one person applied.

there's really no specified number of "spots", just apply if you think you qualify at anytime.  even if we don't announce its staff hiring time.  (although we need more staff at staff hiring time, obviously.  :P)

What Yunhua98 said. Shmibs was hired away from the hiring period, after all.

You definitively need an active calc project, though, and one where we saw signs of life on the forums recently (not months ago and prefereably not menu-based stuff). Also although we mostly look at the past month period, if in the past year we noticed that you often had sporadic activity, where you vanished for entire weeks all the time or stuff like that, it might still have an impact on your chances. You need to remember that we are renewing our team to keep it active, so adding people that might stop posting for an entire month all the time would kinda defeat the point.

By the way those who apply needs to do it via PM. I just forward the applications to the rest of the staff afterward.

And most of the time, if I have nothing to say, I don't say anything... Maybe that is a bad habit?

Yeah the thing is that we tend to be careful, because in the past we sometimes added new staff and they got demoted one month later for not posting enough.

I don't think I'll apply.
First, becoming a Coder Of Tomorrow is a dream, so if it is fulfilled, I couldn't keep on dreaming about it.
Secondly, I have lots of projects but not even one topic because all of my projects always are discontinued as I discourage myself.
