Congratulations to the winners! Well done gamers.
Shouldn't there be also a 68k category next time around?

Congrats to the winners indeed! I would like to see a 68k category next time, but the only concern with that is that there may not be enough entrants in the 68k category.

Congratulations squidgetx and Builderboy! That was a really close one at the end, and I have to say I consider both works of equal merit. Great work also to cyanophycean314 and Adriweb for their awesome submissions :) This year was really very competitive!

I thought there was a price for each category ?

Anyway congratulations to the winners ! :)

Great job to all of the competitors! It was a really close competition in both categories!
This was a great first contest experience for me. Thank you Omnimaga for making it happen.  :D

I thought there was a price for each category ?

I too was under the impression that Nspire Ndless/Basic had their own category.

that's what I thought as well?

Basic and C only got one entry each, so they got merged with the Lua category. Same with z80 Basic, in which nobody entered at all.

Yay !

Congratulations to all and especially the first ;)

Congrats! Also lot of competition between entries in terms of judging, although in terms of voting it was a different story. As for categories that merged, I think they did because there were not enough entries for certain categories as Juju said.

Also Juju I thought z80 BASIC had one entry (Ztrumpet) and it was ASM that had none? ???

I knew you would do that lol (like Levak did last year) :P Netham uses Paypal too, so no worries about that.

Also Juju I thought z80 BASIC had one entry (Ztrumpet) and it was ASM that had none? ???
I might be confused. Anyway we didn't wanted people to win by default in pretty much every category but Lua, so we merged the categories together. It was in our plans to merge them anyway if there's not enough people.

Yeah I guessed so. Also that might save money for possible future contests this fall or winter maybe? Computer contest would be nice (game maybe?) for example. I think 68K would have poor entry turnout, though, due to how almost nobody code for 68K calcs anymore.

68K POTY entries by year:
2003: 17
2004: 47
2005: 24
2006: 5
2007: 3
2008: 2
2009: 4
2010: 10 (3 of which were programs from 2005 and 2007)
2011: 2
2012: 0 (so far)

If we compare with Z80 you'll notice where programming popularity seems to be:
2003: 8
2004: 20
2005: 7
2006: 8
2007: 5
2008: 0
2009: 7
2010: 18 (5 of which were releases from 2004, 2005 and 2007)
2011: 8
2012: 10 (3 of which were releases from 2000, 2005 and 2009)

And Nspire, just for fun (although ticalc rarely ever featured Lua programs, so it's a bit off):
2007: 0
2008: 0
2009: 0
2010: 6
2011: 7
2012: 1

I think we might as well consider 68K dead with no hope of ever recovering. It's pretty much like if we decided to organize a TI-86 contest.

If we have too few entrants in the 68k category we can always merge or cancel the category.
Title: Re: Omnimaga Programming Contest 2012: The Results

I think the thing that could be done next year is maybe have every category merged in advance. I think the current contest was limited to 5 categories, so the staff could afford to pay contest prizes, so no computer and 68K category could be made, but now that they merged and that PRIZM got no entry, that left a lot of money for extra categories to start up.

What there could be is a poll asking if people would participate to a 68K and 9860G contest, for example.

Actually, the computer programming contest was scheduled to be a different contest because, well, we wanted to leave this one only for calc programming. And yeah, we ought to poll people to see who would participate in an eventual 68k contest.

Also coming soon: a TI-86 contest!

really congratz to the winners, i'm glad i still got third, even with the bugs xp

i'm glad the results finally arrived :) and i think it is correct that adriweb and cyanophycean314 won, seeing the huge gap between 2nd and 3rd..
so really congratz, also to the z80 part (but i'm not really into that anymore)

I would enter I think, although you never know what could happen. Perhaps I'm busy, die or get banned in the meantime. :P
An other idea I had in mind was one contest where anybody could enter in which category he wished(maybe excluding computer). Something like Cemetech did last year if I'm not mistaken.

EDIT: Also, DJ, I refuse to let 68k be considered dead. :P I'll try to save it.
Actually I believe that 68k might be still a bit active in french websites, although I'm not sure at all.

Regarding the votes of the other judges, are there any plans to open up the details on how they voted ?

I refuse to let 68k die as well. I'll enter if there's one.

+1

In France, (at least in my classes) there were as many 68k as z80. I had even never seen a Nspire among my friends untill the last year !

68k are still very used, I'm almost sure that there are still more 68k users than Nspires in France. But unfortunately few people seem to be interested in programming it, I mean making project and enter the community.
Nspires are more recent and anyone who gets a CX wants immediately to see what he can do with it.. I'm sure that was the same at the beginning of the 68k calculators. (bad english, isn't it ? x) )

If there were a 68k section I might participate obviously. (even if I can't be sure, besides this year will probably be very busy.. :/ (2nd year of "prépa".. --' ) )

@Yeong: TI-86 programming (BAISC or ASM) isn't much different from the 83+/84+ Series.
Title: Re: Omnimaga Programming Contest 2012: The Results

So I guess we will have at least 3 entrants for an eventual 68k contest, that might be enough for a small one.

So stay tuned for the 68k and computer programming contest, maybe also a music one, that would be pretty nice if we would have more small contests thoughout the year, not as big as this one though.

I think the reasons why 68K died were the following:

1) One person we will not name pretty much killed the 68K community by driving every veteran and newer programmers away with his constant flame wars and attacks towards people's hard work (generally aimed at programs in which he was not involved, from competing sites or written in BASIC). Not much was done against that, and because it was so extreme, that one person alone was nearly enough to bring down the entire 68K community, and it never really recovered because of point #2 and #3.

2) The arrival of the TI-Nspire CAS: After the Nspire series arrived, TI kinda pushed 68K calcs behind, moving all the attention towards Nspire calcs. Because of this, even when the 68K community cooled down after the above ended for a while, there were no new 68K coders joining. Today, with the lack of 68K programmers on forums, it's hard to convince a calc programmer to get a 68K now when he knows only two or three people in the world might play their game, when that game would be played by hundreds on the 83+ or the TI-Nspire.

3) CAS not being allowed in most USA tests: This severely limits the marketability of 68K calcs in North America, as they all includes a CAS. Most people who want an high-end calc that can still be used in exams now get a TI-Nspire. Also, the 68K prices are kinda prohibitive.

Also yeah music would be nice Juju. I kinda forgot about that, but now that TIMGUL URLs redirect to Omni music section and that we already had a music section to begin with, it would probably make some sense to have one.

New contests, due to being at unusual Omnimaga times (Fall?), would probably need a mass-email like the old newsletters, though, especially music. There could be bonus points for MTVMG1/2/3/DHF/M1/2000/3000 users maybe?

OFF-TOPIC: By the way, those who need programming help, the C and ASM sections can also be used for that and of course there is the projects and ideas section :)

/me thinks that, before the the next contest, we should have a poll to see who would take part in what, and if at least 5 people say they would (in case 2 drop out), have that category be included.

also, here are my comments from judging things for z80:

CYANOID:
the difficuluty of getting this to function, plus the fact that it crashed upon exiting and erased itself, were
the biggest annoyances. having to be exactly aligned with a gap in order to walk through it also didn't help.
i liked the graphics, though, particularly the character's death, and the idea wasn't too bad.

Embers-Phoenix:
this game was easily my favourite, there were a few annoying things that weren't ironed out before the demo
was sent in, like the menu being very difficult to work with, the character walking through walls when moving
diagonally, and some of the enemies seeming to move away more often than not, but it still managed to draw
me in very well with a complete storyline/graphical experience.

META:
this game wasn't bad. the gameplay/physics seemed a bit bland, but there wasn't anything "wrong" with it, and
bugs and the like seemed to be mostly taken care of. gameplay was very organic, and the form swapping added
   a nice touch.

RPS:
despite being Rock Paper Scissors, i thoroughly enjoyed z's game =). the graphics, numerous achievements, and
seemingly unpredictable AI were all brilliant.

Vortex:
this game would have had my top vote were we judging strictly on Artificial Intelligence. the enemy was
challenging, and the level generation was smart. it was somewhat confusing to begin with, however, and the
   gameplay wasn't very exciting.

ZAMPO:
this game has a great plot and some wonderful gameplay ideas, but in its current unfinished and undocumented
state isn't very playable. i'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out, though =)

I'm agree that the 68k section is pretty much dead DJ, but I was just saying I'll try to save it. As long as I don't stop making programs for it, it won't be officially dead. ;)
Although I doubt there is a big chance of recovering. But maybe, since Loulou 54 confirmed what I though.
