Title: Omnimaga rules update
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 29, 2011, 11:36:18 pm
Some board and IRC rules were modified in the rules section. Here are the changes below:

-Added information about bans that ends at 2 AM the night after.

-Added a rule against repeated topic advertising on OmnomIRC and #omnimaga, either by begging people to check a new post or making SpyBot45 notify of the same post multiple times

-Starting religion debates is no longer allowed. The 4 ones that were started this month only caused problems, as it is too controversial to be discussed online, let alone Omnimaga. Such topics will now be locked immediately.

-Enforcing non-existent rules using religion as an excuse is no longer allowed (for example, somebody who call people out for using the expression "oh my god!" or for swearing). Not that doing so without religion motives was welcome in the first place anyway, though...

-Added extra information in the vandalism rules (such as abuse of the rating system)

-Ragequits in response to rule enforcments are now considered as drama-starting.

-Netham45 must finish his TI-84 PLus xLIB game Lurking Shades in 2011.

Eventually those rules are meant to be rewritten in a shorter way, but at least for now this should make some stuff that we enforced for a while a bit clearer and solve certain isolated issues there were recently.

The rules can be found here (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=2).

I hate to see how we have to make rules like this. I wish we could just count on people to be good, friendly, and otherwise in the omni spirit.

Yay, clearer literature!
^Not sarcasm. Really.

Yeah. Fortunately the religion part is pretty much obvious. Internet is not the place to discuss that stuff. On the old Omnimaga board, we had this rule from late 2006 to 2007. We tried to do with it on the new site because I did not want to censor people on that. However I have to think about keeping Omnimaga friendly, and because we have so many users from different countries now, I kinda have no choice but to restrict talk on religion.

As for the topic advertising or abusing the rating system, this is stuff that happened several months ago here, but I did notice a bit of the former happening on OmnomIRC recently too. I meant to add it for a long while, but I just did not feel like editing the board rules (which is a major PITA. I really need to change the system in which they're stored because it's a real mess).

As for the 2 AM ending bans, well people should be happy in some ways because the end of the nDoom invasion policy means that we usually take longer before using a 1 week ban now. Bans under 1 week lenght are not stored permanently in records.

It's like my dad (and bartender-turned-cop-turned-teacher) always said: To many wars have been fought over religion and politics.

If spybot is down for a certain reason, and I'm talking to someone (on IRC) about a project or so and then make a post in that topic. Would it be against the rules to give him a link to my new post?

That is fine. Just as long as the link or request is not posted multiple times, insisting so people check.

I like the new rules update. This should help things run a bit smoother. =)

I think someone made an error:

Quote
7: Porn, warez, ROMs, copyrighted music and any kind of piracy

Quote
10: NSFW/C (Not suitable for work/children) content outside the "Randomness" section of the forums. This excludes swearing, which is allowed everywhere, providing it doesn't break rule #7.

I'm guessing someone added in a rule between them and broke the consistency :) just so you are aware.

shouldn't there be a no at the beginning of those rules.

What's a ragequit?
It's an IRC thing, where you, uh... rage and quit. ;)

It also includes the forums. An example of ragequit is if I warn someone because he was rude to a member or triple posted, then he objects against the rules and after arguing that the rule is a rule, he simply goes mad and say he's quitting the ti community.

I am really in favour or the religion and the "Check my topic NOW" ones, those are the most important ones IMO, but they're all fine.

I was just looking at it in the context of the post

Ragequits can be very annoying and hurtful to the community
