Title: OmnomIRC revived
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 22, 2012, 11:48:51 pm
There were concerns about OmnomIRC never returning in the past weeks due to the server on which it was on crashing and no plan to put OmnomIRC back on it due to heavy resource usage. However, thanks to the help of one of our other staff, a new server was found so the shoutbox could be brought back up (http://ourl.ca/17263) again!

Apparently, everything seems to work fine right now, although logs still gives a 403 Forbidden error. Also the new posts notifier bot is still down, so a temporary replacement is being used for the time being. When OmnomIRC takes too many resources on the new server, it should hopefully simply slow down without affecting the rest of the site.

Remember that if OmnomIRC is unavailable for you or if you prefer to browse Omni with it turned OFF, you can still access #omnimaga on EFnet at irc.efnet.org (server list (http://www.efnet.org/?module=servers)) or OmniNet at irc.omnimaga.org. (IRC guide by seana11 (http://ourl.ca/17245))

Also, according to Omnimaga Facebook page, the site was down earlier, due to an Amazon outage which, as reported by Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyclay/2012/10/22/amazon-aws-goes-down-again-takes-reddit-with-it/) also took Reddit down.

Awesome! My activity went way down when there was no irc, hopefully others' activity will increase as well. :)

Yeah I noticed you almost vanished entirely D:. I hope you return soon. Hellninjas hasn't been on much lately too but the site is blocked at his school and when he gets on at home his parents seems to have switched to North Korean parental tactics lately

So far Omnimaga has not been blocked at my school.  Hopefully it stays that way.  I try not to go on it much there because all forums that I know of are blocked and I'm afraid that if I visit Omnimga more than once a week or so they might see that it's a forum and block it.  Does Omnimaga have an android app? I ask because I have a smart phone and it would be pretty nice to be able to check the forums through an app.

There is none, but if you got money or a credit card or something there's the Tapatalk app that is compatible with Omni.

So who do we have to thank for taking the server upon him?

Great! :)
Thank you for dealing with this problem so quickly after being asked to.

And now, go on with the next step ;)

Yeah I've heard about hellninjas' parents. :\
That aside, it's really good to have omnom back.

No problem! :)
I felt that activity would be lost rather quickly if OmnomIRC was not reinstated.
Since I had a VPS available (backup2/MC), I decided to try and run it. :)
With a few setting changes, hopefully it won't crash my server... :P

EDIT: You guys should totally check out Deep Thought's web IRC (http://ourl.ca/17254)! This is also a great solution if the server goes down! :)

Yay ! It is back :D
It was a pain to have to refresh to know if new posts arrived or not :P
And yay !, first one to give a +1 to alberthrocks :P

Yeah a lot of the activity was helped with new posts notifications really and the ability to chat directly on the site. I felt that if I was in a separate window to chat, I didn't pay as much attention to the site. It also felt like both were no longer linked as much.

Yeah, I give 2 thumbs up to tapatalk. I use it all the time on my iPod. :D
One bad thing is that it still can't access omnimaga if it is blocked. (like at school)

The other bad thing is that it's not free. I wish someone could do like TI-Planet and create an app for the site. But again for TI-Planet the app is only for iOS so it limits the audience due to overpriced Apple devices (I can get a decent Android device at Walmart for 3 times cheaper)

Nah they are still down. If you click the links it says 403 Forbidden. I don't remember why they were taken down, although maybe it was for safety reasons or something (stalking/spying/finding old passwords/etc)

in this case the links should be removed IMO

Iirc it was because of google's bot making running resource-intensive things and ignoring robots.txt or something like that.

Oh maybe it was that. Although if it ignores robots.txt then it might either be a bug on Google part that should probably be reported to them or the robot.txt was not written properly.

I guess if they do nothing though (although it would be bad for them since on other sites it would violate privacy laws) then maybe it would be better to have some log reader on the forums and everything reserved for registered members.

I do host, albeit very incomplete and slightly messed up, logs on http://withg.org:9003 (http://withg.org:9003)

Ow, nice! Just curious, is it a other bot that omnomirc that logs that stuff? (and i have a large amount of #omnimaga-games logs, always when mafiabot is online)

There is another log bot I believe, but the logs are private.

I didn't post much either. :( But I did keep coming back to check if IRC is up. *Sigh*
School is taking up so much time now that I'm having to pause my python experiments.
So far I have almost finished a Facebook auto-responder. (For when they wont go away and your playing Torchlight. Or Minecraft. Or Sanctum.)
I'm also making a small podcast! So maybe I'll be on moar. Dad may be getting Hughes Net in April, so I can get on whenever then!

@Eeems: Would you be able to host Netham45 logs btw? A lot of them were provided by me, so without a script the 2007 ones would be in French.

They take up a lot of space, and I don't know we have enough space on the server. I could ask Albert if he would be ok with hosting them on one of his servers, but I don't know. I'd also have to ask Netham if he would let me host them.

OmnomIRC logs everything to SQL. Maybe there could be a daily cron job that generates some static html pages from the SQL.

Oh ok I thought they were still txt files (or HTML). The old logs I gave him (2005-may 2009) were txt files (some generated by Eggdrop, others by mIRC then some by X-Chat 2)

Or I could write a script to view the logs. I'll just have to get access to the mysql database.

Yeah, I was under the impression logs were still flat files, I guess I was wrong.

Maybe Netham45 would be willing to give his script to Jim or let him view it so he doesn't have to rewrite everything from scratch? Would be nice, however, if it was made simpler (ie fewer colors) so it lags less. Maybe disable searching for the time being.
