OS 2.55MP released
« on: January 11, 2011, 02:27:15 pm »
TI has released a new version of the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition operating system: OS 2.55MP. Like the previous one (and its TI-Nspire 84 Plus emulator counterpart), this OS defaults to MathPrint mode, which allows you to input math operations in a same fashion as the TI-73 and TI-73 Explorer. However, in 2.53MP, some BASIC games using ASM utilities to invert text to white font on black background, Omnicalc, xLIB and a few others stopped working, and that OS gave assembly programmers a lot of troubles to make their applications cross-compatible between OS 1.19, 2.43 and 2.53MP. There were also reports about bugs causing the calculator to crash or freeze when triggered and MathPrint mode was several times slower than its TI-73 counterpart, causing home screen BASIC games to run up to 4 times slower than normal. In Classic mode, those problems usually went away, but making BASIC games automatically disable MathPrint was a bad idea, because this would cause them to not work on previous OSes.

We do not know what this new version of the TI-84 Plus OS includes. Does it introduces any new feature? Does it fixes bugs or introduces new ones? Is it larger than previous OSes, causing the user to have fewer archive memory on their calculator? Does it silently install an anti-downgrade protection like in TI-Nspire OS 2.1? Does this mean a new TI-Nspire OS will come out soon?

The TI community will most likely find out anytime soon.

UPDATE: More information about the OS have been found on TI-Nspire Google Group: http://groups.google.com/group/tinspire/browse_thread/thread/cebd5f38bbbe6ec0#

There is also a PDF file attached there explaining the new additions to the calculator OS.

It's not much different from 2.53, as far as I can tell from a cursory glance. It does include at least two new commands, STATWIZARD ON and STATWIZARD OFF. I can't figure out what the STATWIZARD is though.

I think it may be their attempt at fixing problems that Brandon Wilson's patch fixed.

I hope they fixed some bugs, rather than just add the StatWizard thingy... x.x

Ok! I found more info about the OS: a post on TI-Nspire Google group and an attached PDF file. See first post for the links! Seems like most stuff that got added are wizards.

Not surprising, though. I'm glad most ASM stuff still seem to run, though. I wish they spent more time fixing the previous OSes.

The first bug?

We luv you, TI.   :w00t:
It's because it's waiting for you to do something.  Anyway, move your cursor up to the top left point, then press enter. Move it down to the bottom-right point and press enter. That should work.

However, Wabbit doesn't like this OS version, though.

It seems they are all idiots and didn't fix many or all of the bugs, but instead added new buggy features?  Thank you indeed TI

I just sent it to WabbitEmu. The first thing I noticed is that they expanded the OS onto page $73 (I knew they were out of space). Which means that the $70-$73 sector is now out of bounds to be screwed with. Which in turn, I believe, means that Ti-Boy would corrupt your OS.
