Title: OS 3.0.1 removed from TI website
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 28, 2011, 04:49:57 pm
As reported by critor on Omnimaga (http://ourl.ca/10540/203167) and TI-BANK (http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=news&ac=commentaires&id=1068), TI has removed OS 3.0.1 from their website and was replaced with OS 2.1:

http://education.ti.com/calculators/products/US/os-update/

No direct link to OS 2.1 is available there, but if you visit the specific calculator pages, you should eventually find your way to the older OS.

Note that Lua is only available on OS 3.0.1 and that you need Nleash if you decide to downgrade from OS 2.1.0 to an older OS. Also OS 2.1 size is much larger than others.

From what I last read, at least 8 bricked calculators were reported online since the release of OS 3.0.1. If you still can find copies of OS 3.0.1 around, remember to use TNOC (http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=archives&ac=voir&id=1922) prior installing it on your calculator!

There has been other reports of bricked TI-Nspire all around the web on very various sites.

You can even find some on sites like Yahoo Answers for example...

Something like 15 bricked calculators reported online up to now to my knowledge.

TI has officially disowned their OS until further notice.  I can only infer that they are going to do either a massive debugging, change the Boot2 back to normal, or just not release it or the CX for a while longer.

Well, finally :P

have they recompensated the bricked calculators of those unfortunate owners? ti that is? and yeah that stinks esp since i lost my nspire and it has os 3.0. if i find it lets hope its not too late.

Hope you find it soon D: But then if you don't care about anything on it, you can always get a new one from TI. They probably would replace it for you.

how could ti miss something that big?

How'd they miss all those other bugs (MP bugs, 1.1 power bug, etc.)? ¯\(°_o)/¯ (Yes, that was stolen from Geekboy1011. Hope you don't mind.)

Aarg!  I can't believe they actually released something like this.  (This real, this time. :P)

Also, I wonder what TI will do to compensate those with bricked calculators.

Knowing TI they will claim that is was us messing with the boot sector and not their own bugs that caused the bricked calcs to occur. Remember that TI Doesn't Care :P

/me suggests that we all protest by buying Casio Prizm's to show TI how our loyalty will change when they betray us.

How can they blame it on us if this problem happens to people that are not affiliated with the TI community.  They have no way of telling.  Judging from TI's past actions, I don't think they will do much.

I think they'll fix any calc that calls into ti-cares for free, fix whatever was fubar'd, and re-release it.

I doubt they'll tell us any of that, though.

This was a very good action by TI, I'm surprised and hope for a fixed OS 3.0.1.

Fixed OS 3.0.1? Mmm... I think they're just going to just make it harder for us to program on it.  They might even take Lua away!

I hope not, although we never know. I hope they don't restrict access to Lua...

If they do, I planned to do like Cemetech, though, and post some sort of news encouraging people to boycott the CX and get a PRIZM instead (or an older TI calc. /me loves his 84+)

I'm pretty sure they remove Lua. IF so, someone should host a fixed 3.0.1 one on his site (I can do)
Um, btw, I can d'load it from their site, Here (http://education.ti.com/calculators/downloads/US/Software/Detail?id=6824&ref=%2fcalculators%2fdownloads%2fUS%2fSoftware%2fSearch%2fResults%3fcp%3d6001%26ac%3d1)

I don't think TI will necessarily remove Lua, but they might make it incompatible with user made programs and only allow TI made Lua programs. The other possibility is that they might restrict Lua to something like less graphics operations and/or slower speed. And I'm really starting to wonder now, if we all hate TI so much then why do we buy their calcs. I've been loyal to them on the 84 side, but all of this nspire and CX stuff just makes me mad.

The OS I just downloaded has version 3.0.1.1753 is that the old or a new version?

2 days later... TI has just removed the TI-Nspire 3.0 softwares too:
http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=news&ac=commentaires&id=1072

The latest downloadable TI-Nspire software is back to 2.1.

Sure, go ahead, boycott TI so the sales of their most profitable division will drop by a statistically unmeaningful margin.

Yes, the 3.0 softwares files are still there but not linked from anywhere on TI's site.
The 3.0 OS files have really been removed though.

Calculators are not TI's main division. Most of what they make is semiconductors and chips.

Plus, it's not like we're their main market.

We probably make up ~1% of their calc sales.

Also, boycotting won't work, since we already bought the calcs, it's not like we were planning on buying more. They already made the money off of us. A boycott would have to be done by a) the teachers, etc. that are the target market and b) before the teachers bought their calc sets. a boycott is meaningless if the product has already been fully sold. (Not true for consumables, like transportation, groceries, office supplies, etc.) but you only buy, what, 1 calc per 5 years max? (not counting kerm and DJ :P)

ok then, way less, but I was trying to be optimistic :P
maybe 1E-4%?

Yes, but their educational division is the division with the highest profit margin.

I wonder if that is still true?  They have poured a lot of money into fixing the nspire problems and each design change seems to result in new problems to be solved with no end in sight.  For example a new OS that bricks calc's.  Also the original keyboard with its closely spaced tiny green alpha keys was terrible and the present keyboard with it's closely spaced tiny alpha keys is still terrible.

Wow.. they did not remove 3.0.1 only because of the bricked calcs...

Due to an update issue with TI-Nspire™ handheld operating system (OS) and TI-Nspire computer software, we have temporarily removed select versions of 3.0 from our website. An update to TI-Nspire version 3.0 will be available by mid-May. If you have already updated your handheld's OS or your software successfully, there is no cause for concern. It will function normally. We regret any inconvenience.

Umm.. and some more problems in the CAS version:

What do you mean? They're talking about the bricking, nothing else. They just don't call it "bricking", because not everyone knows what that means...

This blurb of text they wrote is wrong... bricking occurs upon the next reboot. The handheld can work properly even with a bricked boot2, as long as it's not rebooted.

Yea, damage control fail. Hopefully this will start convincing people to update with discretion.

LOL, yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how quick the teachers on the google nspire site will be to update when the next OS comes out.

Who knows maybe if were lucky TI will have a bug free OS(I believe the chances of this are about the same as randomly guessing the private key for a 2048 bit encryption)
