Title: OURL
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 13, 2012, 12:10:46 am
As you might have noticed since the last few days, omniurl.tk have stopped working and now redirect to a parked domain page. Although Netham45 is unsure why this happened, it is possible that it violated Dot.tk TOS. One year ago, OmniURL went down completely once because it was against Dot.tk rules to use their domain name service for a redirect page or URL shortener and the root of ourl.ca needed an actual website as content. I guess this was the trade-off for offering the service for free, but now thanks to Juju (and his Canadian citizenship), Omnimaga now has an even shorter URL shorterner: OURL. The URL is ourl.ca and it works exactly the same as the other one, although it is now hosted directly on Omnimaga server.

As with OmniURL, the syntax for OURL is the following:

-Post: http://ourl.ca/5221/87910 (Topic ID/Post ID)
-Attachment: http://ourl.ca/a/5232/4376 (a/Topic ID/File ID)
-File info page: http://ourl.ca/f/591 (f/Download ID)
-File download: http://ourl.ca/d/591 (d/Download ID)

There is a bug, though: http://ourl.ca no longer forwards directly to the site front page, but rather a page with only OmnomIRC on it. Besides that, the only difference is the URL name, which sounds like someone throwing up, if pronounced in French.

Also, on the forums, OmniURL links are now censored to OURL ones, to avoid old links from breaking.

/me was expecting a rickroll...

Looks nice! It seems to load faster too, though I'm not quite sure...

Pretty cool :)
Now to hope .ca sites aren't blocked at school like .tk's..

Edit: could it be possible to have it link to more things, ie ezportal pages or boards?

like..
http://ourl.ca/e/25
http://ourl.ca/b/71

It would suck if they blocked every canadian site there O.O

And yeah it would be nice. I remember OmniURL linked to forum rules, for example.

Afaict there's still the same extensions (some at least), like /en links to irclogs and /r-en links to the english rules.

omniurl‌.tk actually had the same bug—I guess the entire script has stayed the same, only moved to a new URL.

It's shorter though XD

That's one thing I'm proud to be Canadian. Get .ca domains for a decent price. ^_^

I'm pretty sure you mean omniurl.tk ;)

Congrats on getting another TLD that's even shorter this time! :D

I'll have to find ways to bypass word filters, it seems <_<

It is the same exact script as the old one, I just made a new vhost on the server for ourl.ca. Because of that, all existing links should work.

Also, a plus for switching to OURL: now my school won't block me! :) (*.tk is blocked, probably because it's associated with bad, evil websites :P)

Yeah, that's pretty much the same for everything that offers free domains (.tk, .co.cc, name it), spammers will register zillions of them in bulk (cuz it's free) and use them to spam.

That's kinda why domain names are paid and have certain restrictions depending of the TLD, they want to make sure the DNS system will be used for good by legit people, or else everything gets blocked because the number of spam registrations outnumbers the number of legit registrations.

Well... it's not to say that spam domains aren't registered en masse either. For instance, there's this website that I went to for investigating how much GoDaddy is losing (the SOPA scandal), and there were a lot of gibberish domains being registered on GoDaddy (like afaklfwiorthqiaoghaio.com). But as always, the majority (I hope :P) is legit, so there's no reason to block.

It sucks, though, because before many sites would use them legitimately, and now because of spammers and companies not checking enough for innapropriate use, those domains get blacklisted in search engines and thus, generate less traffic for people's sites.

Haha, they thought the .tk domain was dormant. WTF.

https://twitter.com/dottk/status/202401008754753536

Anyway, I'm glad we switched to a real, paid domain that doesn't desactivate on a whim. They reactivated it, I doubt it'll be of any use now.

Just noticed that a certain part of the Misc section can be updated. ;)
("Omniurl Url shortener")

I prefer that we stick to Ourl now, because free services are generally not reliable in long terms and can have recurrent problems. And yeah I guess the misc section could be updated.

i'd say stick to ourl too
aaaaaaaand, http://ourl.ca/en links to the english logs but http://ourl.ca/de not to the german ones
http://ourl.ca/r-en links to the english rules but http://ourl.ca/r-de not to the german ones

Yeah, when those shortcuts were implemented, Omnimaga did not have a german section and rules page yet. There used to be a dutch sub-forum, though.

Only Netham45 can add them, and he isn't active much lately, so that could probably take months. :P
