Title: Portal Prelude released
Post by: Deep Toaster on November 30, 2012, 11:25:43 pm
EDIT: Hey guys, if you've got a Reddit account and want to show Builder a little support, check out his thread here and give him all your upvotes! Reddit Thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/1438fi/portal_on_a_calculator/)

EDIT2: And if you want to stalk Builderboy he gave ticalc a nice interview here: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/14/148/148116.html Congrats on the feature!

One of the first projects started in Axe, Portal Prelude (formerly Portal X) was started over two and a half years ago (http://ourl.ca/1653/24479/) by Builderboy. Today it has been released!

Welcome to Aperture Laboratories!  Long before GLaDOS ever ran the facility, step into the shoes of a test subject and test the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (ASHPD) for yourself!  Test your way through 38 devious test chambers using Portals, in addition to many other intriguing gameplay elements such as plasma balls and electric fields.

Portal Prelude is similar in gameplay to Portal: The Flash Version (http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php), a side-on puzzle platformer game based on the same premise as Valve's famous game (http://www.thinkwithportals.com/), complete with realistic Builderboy-esque physics. It's not quite 3D, but it's an amazing feat and a great way to pass the time (even if you don't really have the time to kill <_<) testing your ability to think with portals. And High Energy Pellets and cubes and all that fun stuff.

It won't send to my calc, I think I broke it :[ Everytime I try to send it, it flashes "Garbage Collecting" then the error XMIT, then my calc crashes. Before this, it was saying there wasn't sufficient memory, though I had >200000 bytes of archive space and I eventually removed enough stuff to make it >300000. It's an 84+, by the way, using TIConnect. I think I must have either messed up my OS or TIConnect can't handle such a large app XD (But it sent Pokémon Red to my SE 0_o)

Hooray :D Finally after a 2.5 year wait it's out! (...wait. So you started this around when I joined? Never realized that :P)

Grr, I figured out the problem--- You forgot to resign the app :P I just resigned it and instead of being 192KB, the file is now a little over 38KB and sends to the calc properly.

nspire cx version?
that would be great.

Yep, I'm thinking about making that in Lua for the Nspire.

Do we absolutely have to re-sign the app before being able to use it? If so, then Builderboy you might have to update your readme or release a version that won't force you to re-sign (unless Axe no longer supports that?)

And Adriweb that would be cool. Just make sure it supports multiple keypresses, though, because I think some puzzles might require you to shoot portals while moving around simultaneously.

If someone ever makes this in Nspire or PRIZM C, maybe this could be ported to 68K as well.

EDIT: Bug report from TI-Planet: On OS 2.55MP, the 9 key shoots upwards instead of diagonally down-right.

I thought I had fixed the signing issue last night? o.O Unless 're-signing' is different than 'signing' and I'm missing something?  I originally uploaded an unsigned version near the very begining, and later reuploaded the signed version, maybe you downloaded it right away?  If so, try the latest version and see if that works.

That's very strange, and sounds like it could be a general Axe bug or something, I'll have to run some additional tests.

I am glad it is finally released :D

However, the graphics look a lot like TAG's but not the controls so I am a bit confused when playing :P
Title: Re: Portal Prelude released
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 02, 2012, 02:26:59 am
It's because Graviter was greatly inspired from Portal X/Prelude, and Tag was greatly inspired from Graviter. :P

The first one to support sprites (see readme)

Also I fixed the issue where on certain calcs with slightly different hardware, the portal shooting could get messed up sometimes.

I dragged it over the batch file named "DRAG APP OVER ME" and it told me that it resigned the app. I downloaded it almost immediately, too, but it is on my calculator now :) I've never played Portal before, and I have to say that it is quite fun!

Yeah you probably got ahold of the unsigned version, I fixed it pretty quickly but you missed it :] Glad you are liking it!

That is good to hear!  If anybody has any trouble shooting portals, make sure you are running the latest version, and if you still have issues, make sure to send me a message!

84+SE with OS 2.43
While holding down up and continuously jumping, shooting up shoots up-right, shooting up-right shoots up, and shooting up-left shoots up. This is probably a problem with how Axe detects keypresses, though.
Also, I can't solve level 18.

Dinosteven, did you download the latest version?  There was a problem very similar to yours that I believe I fixed yesterday.
Title: Re: Portal Prelude released
Post by: Xeda112358 on December 02, 2012, 06:57:23 pm
Yeah, I still need to download the latest version, but I was noticing the keypress thing (I was specifically trying to make it bug because I am quite familiar with the keypress issue). And I am currently at level 21 >.> Keep trying dinosteven :D
Title: Re: Portal Prelude released
Post by: dinosteven on December 02, 2012, 07:12:41 pm
Downloaded the latest and it works with no bugs. Weird but good thing happened, though. I overwrote everything, but my progress is still at lvl 18. I thought for sure it would go back to 1...
Title: Re: Portal Prelude released
Post by: Builderboy on December 02, 2012, 07:15:20 pm
The progress is saved in an external appvar, so as long as the versions continue to use the same save format, you should never lose your progress when you update to a newer version :) And thats good to hear that it works now!

Yeah i think the cutoff date was December 1st. Some years, the cutoff date is late November when the POTY is announced then, while sometimes they choose to wait after Dec 1st if the POTY news arrive late.

Also the following pic was from 2005, a few days after xLIB xLIB Revolution made Engadget front page. Back then, it peaked at 2800 downloads in a week, 1 more than VTI:

Now look at what Portal Prelude managed to do in even less time! O.O

Thats awesome to read!  Although they seem to have mistakenly noted that turrets and the companion cube exist in the game :X

And DJ yeah I am super amazed at how quickly Portal Prelude gained attention!  Your video was on the front page of r/video yesterday on Reddit, and I have been getting messages from various people asking me about the game, it's all very exciting!

the game
the game

<_<

And nice to see it on Clubic. I wonder if it ever made Engadget, since I didn't see it there. Usually blogs can take a few weeks before picking it up (like nDoom). At least hopefully the Portal fanbase isn't similar to standard FPSes though :P

The funny thing is how some people say they want you to port the game to the PC exactly as it is, with no graphical improvement, because they like the old-skoolness of it, and other people say they like it more than other 2D clones because the story seems more developed. Might want to wait for a full PC port, though, so the calc gets enough time to have its share of attention. :P It would be nice to see a TI-Nspire, 84PCSE and Casio PRIZM port, though...

Unless they mistook your game as a calc port of Portal Prelude. I didn't even know there was already something called Portal Prelude until someone mentionned it in comments somewhere.

You could say they are related, as the computer version also takes place before GlaDOS was hooked up, but there are story differences as well as the computer version has a more developed ending.

Yeah true, I meant I didn't know it existed at all. Is yours based/inspired from that mod?
Title: Re: Portal Prelude released
Post by: Builderboy on December 04, 2012, 03:58:43 pm
You could say it was inspired, but I had already started working on Portal when I came across that mod. I think the fact that we were both working across the same premise led to similarities in the story, although I will admit the small cut-scene near the middle was definitely directly inspired by a similar event that takes place in the mod.

Also the game made it on Gizmodo it seems, along with a Japanese site.
