Title: Protect your TI-Nspire startup with ZLock
Post by: critor on February 14, 2012, 06:39:49 am
Do you want to keep your secrets in your Nspire? Why not adding a boot password to it?

It's now possible with ZLock from Levak.

ZLock makes use of the latest Ndless 3.1 feature and adds a password on boot. Note that it doesn't protect your Nspire if it is just turned off then on - only when it's (re)booting.

ZLock uses a hidden config file which cannot be altered or removed with the OS. And if anybody tries to brute-force your password, they will get an additional 10s delay after three wrong tries.

Download today, and be sure to read the ReadMe! ;)

Nice. :D The only problem I forsee though is many people forgetting their password and locking themselves down from their calc. This happened many times in the past when MirageOS was at its peak of popularity and people were using its password feature to prevent teachers or bad "friends" from clearing their RAM. <_<

In the worst case scenario, are there any way for someone forgetting his password to unlock his calc, or does it remain locked down forever?

Yes: maintenance menu -> complete reformat -> reinstall OS

Pff, TI thinks nothing of storing the Push-to-Test mode information in the normally-unerasable certificate; why not make an unerasable password?

Actually, it's way easier^^

Any native program stored in the folder ‘ndless/startup/’  and its subfolders will be run at OS boot time sequently in alphabetical order. You have to create the ‘startup/’ directory manually. Maintaining the ESC key pressed during startup (when the progress bar is almost done) skips these programs – this is useful when a buggy program has been stored in the startup folder.
(See http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-user-guide/ (http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-user-guide/))

And even if that does not work you can simply delete the OS with the mainteance menu, delete ZLock with the Link Software or TILP and then reinstall the OS, as file system access through USB is still possible when an OS is not installed, so you can keep all your documents. :)

You should add a function which turns the nspire fully off, so that you don't need to wait a couple of days :D

Can somebody make a tutorial on how to install this? Do you drag the folder into My Documents/ndless/startup?

Yes, and launch it once to setup as detailed in the ReadMe.
If you want to uninstall if, as the ReadMe says, rename it to uninstall.
This can be done from Nspire Computer Software IIRC, or just remove the hidden config file : config.zlock

And if you can't, just press Esc or On (can't remember) to avoid Ndless startup launch.

Update :

Zlock update adds energy management using a fading contrast/backlight when unused.
By the way I added fadeIn/Out quite everywhere so that it is even moar epic, and increased limit to 10 digits so that it is even moar securized.

Download ZLock 1.2 (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=3959) now !

I woke up this morning bringing the solution to the problem I wasn't able to manage alpha keys.
In fact I've added them to the function that reads a character but haven't modified the condition in the function that reads the passord :D

I updated the archive :

So I downloaded this and put in the startup folder and everything. And then when I ran it and put in the password I wanted, it wouldn't take my password! What do I do? I'm scared.

You can skip the Ndless startup system by pressing ON or Esc while the Nspire boots (I can't remember which one it is).

Didn't work. Does it work on nspire cx's?

EDIT: Nevermind, it was Esc and it only works when you hold it down for the whole boot. Thanks!

I finally installed this. Awesome. Now my Nspire-owning friend won't have any use when he steals mine :P
