Title: S.A.D: Seek & Destroy source code released
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 23, 2011, 04:38:23 pm
As Hot_Dog free time went down considerably and may go even lower in about a year, he has decided to cut down on big projects for the calculator and only focus on smaller ones from now on (such as Crabcake). As a result, S.A.D is now discontinued. He has released the entire source code in Omnimaga archives:

S.A.D source code by Hot_Dog and Buckeye (Z80 ASM) (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=686)

We are sorry to see this project go, but we would like to thank Hot Dog for his dedication to the community and all his contributions on Omnimaga. Hot Dog is going to continue contributing to Omnimaga as manager on the forum maintenance and possibly new smaller calculator projects for a while, though.

Hopefully someone can take over this project in the future.

The other reason for the source code release was, of course, the stolen laptop incident from a few months ago

I don't remember how much I lost...not too much...I do know that everything up to the fog of war was saved (fog of war NOT included)

Hmm I see. I wasn't sure since you didn,t work on it much shortly before the crash but sometimes we never know.

Anyway hopefully somebody take over this or get ins^piration to make a game based on this. It was really great.

By the way check your PMs (about the project threads)

This seems like a big project, so not sure if anybody can do that, but would still like it finished :)

Either way, Hot Dog and Buckeye, bad to know this is over, but good of you to upload source :)

Wow. I'm sad to see the death of this. BTW, why are there svn files in the folder as well? Do you have a repository somewhere?

Yeah, I have a repository.  The reason I didn't give a link is it has .rom files

Aw, sorry to hear. It was looking like such an awesome project. Understandable but unfortunate :(

*sigh*, yes indeed.  We have yet to see the first real-time strategy game for 83+/84+ calculators.

In the past I wanted to attempt one, but I never took the chance because I feared it would be too overhelming, as I am used to never having more than two things moving at once on the screen. Also because of my troubles with smooth movement, a strategy game for me would probably be tile by tile movement for the most part and I tend to work in 8x8 tilemaps so sadly, I'm afraid I would not be able to take over SAD. I would love to see somebody take over, though, especially that this game is somewhat different in the way we can control our units like in an action game instead of point and click.

Hey Hot_Dog, I was sorry to hear about your laptop getting stolen and the project getting disbanded. It was pretty impressive all the stuff that you accomplished though and the other stuff that you have done despite not releasing this is surely going to help the community. I cant wait to see what other "smaller, less important" projects you come up with, because they are gonna be great.

Edit: Ha ha yes I did mean Hot_Dog, sorry I was looking at something else when I was typing.

Thanks, Madskillz!  Yeah, even though these things happen, I certainly don't consider my time a waste considering that S.A.D. helped me learn enough to contribute everything else.
