Title: Security update and reminder
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 27, 2011, 08:12:20 pm
Due to recent abuse, we have decided to increase the minimum post count requirement to rate posts. Instead of 5 posts you now need 20, like OmnomIRC.

Also we would like to remind people who use public computers (including home computers that their family use) to log out from the site when they leave, to avoid their forum account being used for malicious intent or compromised.

Ah, yeah, that seems useful. That will help to prevent active members from having ratings drop to negatives for no valid reason...

Oh, i have been logging on in school pc's.
Over the past week, i have used about 15 computers.

Is it possible to have the default time on the pc be 60 min instead of forever on a different IP address than you normally use?
And be forever on the IP address you decide?

Actually having the default be 60 is probably best. If you want to log in forever, all you have to do is change it once anyway

"Recent abuse" :P
To be more serious, it's up to DJ whether or not he wants to reveal what happened, though there doesn't seem to be any reason not too; the abusers are very new members, it seems.

Someone called "Thegame" signed up a new account called "i am a troll" to rate up 14 posts on his other account, raising his total rating from -7 to +7. The same person also rated all posts up on a topic page a few months ago. Also someone used Bwang account at his home to rate up/down about 30 posts, including a 2 years old thread.

What a troll. <sic>

Indeed. I am curious who Thegame was, though (as in, if it was just a new member wanting to have fun here or a former user that got banned ages ago). The many IP addresses used from various countries thing was a bit suspicious, since generally when you use that many proxies it's to evade a ban :P

Usually, on school computers, they use Deep Freeze, so everything you did gets erased and reverted back to the state it was when the computer was installed on reboot. So if your computer has such a thing, it's probably best to reboot it to erase all traces of your visit on Omnimaga on this computer.

wow... I knew I am a troll was a troll, though I am not a troll, because it's I am a troll who is indeed a troll, unlike me, who is not a troll unlike I am a troll.

...more seriously, that's pretty bad to have another account to rate up your posts.  zzCoRRoDe rated up about 3 posts of mine a while ago, but that was acutally my friend, and he was just being nice.

So, are you confident "i am a troll" was the same as TheGame?  Some people actually do come back in a new accoutn to either up their old accouts in some form or just to start with no bias from the community.  Though, trust me, it sucks when you're blamed for it even when you never made another account.  On TKZ I was always so pissed that people were calling me a troll that made a "new" account to start over again, and they even just responded to my projects calling me "Hallo1198" (the other troll guy they thought I was) and "shut up troll" that eventually, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy wishing their site would just die and lived up to be a troll after all.

While I don't want that to happen to TheGame, I DO trust DJ's opinions enough to know that he wouldn't have come to a decision with no proof.  I actually wondered what happened to that "TheGame" guy, and who he was.  And for him to sign up with a name personifying our site's biggest meme, he would probably have to know a lot about the site, much more than a simple lurker would.  So, my guess he may have been one of those people from a while ago that apparently attacked omnimaga so much it had to close in 2008, or he was banned sometime after that.

So, good decision DJ, I'll stop my rant :)

Also, what do you think happened with Bwang's account?  I really doubt he would have done that... maybe his kid brother or something? (stupid guess)

Ashbad, actually, it is his kid brother. his brother's goal is to get bwang banned from omni `-`

whoa, good guess on my part, I really just pulled that one out of my hat. O.O

EDIT: my sausage hat

wow... his brother is really a douche then.  Why would he do that, unless he hates bwang that much?  Maybe someone should email bwang and prompt him to change his password.

This and set his password remembering settings to Never on login. And logout after usage, of course.

Have there been any thoughts about allowing people to have two passwords?

That way if they log on with one they cannot do any posts or anything, just watching things and the other will actually let them do stuff :D

Or if they enter the wrong password >3 times or so it reports it, pm'ing the user or something.
"Somebody tried to access your account" or the like.

Yeah, 2 passwords was exactly what I was thinking O_o you would have the normal user set password, then a second one, given via pm at request. if both are not right after 2-3 tries, BAM, no logging in for an hour or so...

Then the real user comes along...
Or maybe to log in after that one would need both passwords.

Well at least the good thing is that zorrocode was a different person.

And yes I am confident Thegame is i am a troll, because both account posts were similar (the first half with good grammar and the other half of the post with plenty of typos), his posts content were similar, both were a bit trollish, although Thegame was worse a few months ago and when i am a troll logged out then Thegame logged in a second or two afterward, the two IP addresses were the same. In addition to that it was quite suspicious that i am a troll logged in just to rate 14 Thegame posts up then Thegame logging in immediately afterward and ask "Why is my respect so high?" a few days after he complained it was low.

As for trying to start with no bias from the community, I think the best way for that is to actually improve. At least on Omnimaga it's the best way, because we do not hold grudges and we make sure members won't hold any, either. Trust me Ashbad, during the first two or three weeks you were active here, some staff had a negative opinion about you, which were not helped due to two UTI posts in particular. But you improved greatly since then and now these same staff seems to enjoy talking to you and I don't even hear anything regarding your past behavior since a few months. This is a proof that we don't hold grudges. On many other forums, unfortunately, once you screw up, it's over: there is always a group of people who will live in the past. No offense to Cemetech because they're a great site, but I still have some bad memories from the treatment Netham45 received there in late 2006. By Fall, that year, he had improved, yet people still did everything to make him leave and one former admin even banned him for no reason. I am glad this stuff stopped happening afterward there (or at least, it did not happen to such extents), otherwise I would never have started recommending the site again.

As for people posting under a different nickname, I myself ended up posting under a different name back in late 2007 on Omni, UTI and MaxCoderz, because of grudges held by some people about how I moderated on Omni, but I was discovered because we can't hide ourselves behind another screen name. Eventually someone will discover, by your way of chatting and stuff. IMHO I think the best thing to do is to apologize, make sure to not screw up again, then if some people really want to hold grudges and cause you harm, then it's best to just leave that place. Hiding yourself can be seen even more badly, because people dislike when people are not honest and most forums have rules against duplicate accounts, anyway.

As for Bwang, it is someone from his family, like his siblings/brother. As for who Thegame is, we may never know, but one of his post was rather suspicious and made it sound like it might actually be one of our banned users.
