Title: SirCmpwn demotion
Post by: Hot_Dog on May 26, 2011, 01:05:37 pm
We at Omnimaga are sorry to announce that, at least for the time being, SirCmpwn is no longer a coder of tomorrow.  However, this is not necessarily a permanent decision.

So is he going to be Anti-Riot Squad or Member?

It's bad to hear another admin has been demoted, even if temporarily. Will we know the reason for such demotion?

Best wishes to SirCmpwn :)

He's gonna be a regular forum member. In 2 months he is free to send a new staff application, however, which would be reviewed then depending of his upcoming forum activity, projects updates and behavior. The reason why this happened was due to a repeated incident on the forums recently (fight starting in two religion threads, one of which he created after the previous one was locked) and last month another one on IRC (posting porn links). I believe there was something else too, but I forgot. But basically the line of what is acceptable at Omni was crossed, and as result he was demoted. Note that there were previous incidents as well too, though, such as the "Our current problems" thread.

I think people who are too opinionated on a subject should avoid participating to topics on that subject. I hope SirCmpwn understands that we are only trying to keep Omnimaga a friendly place and we do not want our team to be seen as a team that encourages starting religion bigotry, and since this happened two times in a row, this would have given us a bad image eventually if we allowed a staff to do that. This is why we think it was best to remove him from the team and put him on probation. Basically he's free to re-apply for staff in 2 months, but if we notice this still happens, his application will be rejected.

Well, I hope this is peacefully resolved. Good luck to SirCmpwn.

Please note that he was a Coder of Tomorrow, and not an admin/manager. ;)

I noticed since the incident he hasn't been here -- IRL, does anyone know if he's alright?

Sir was good in all except those two topics. I'm very glad you guys didn't permaban him.

I hope he returns soon and does some more great work

He definitely doesn't deserve it. He should just either learn to be nicer in religion topics or stay out of them. If he does that he will again be a great member of the omni community

Indeed. At first I got mad and setup a ban with a permban message, but then I was sorry and changed it to an admin vote. All admins voted for either ending the ban at 2 AM or immediately and the majority voted for only a 2 months demotion, including myself.

The issue is that this was one bad incident and something else that happened a month ago caused this punishment, but there still remains the fact that otherwise, he was one of the best staff around. I hope he understands that we just try to keep Omnimaga friendly, and that no admin including myself are mad at him. For such isolated incidents I generally don't hold grudges either.

I'm trying to look at the bright side. at least it brought out some interesting discussion. I found him a very nice member and was very surprised when he was so rude in the religion threads.

I'm a little bit afraid of where this is going.  Now that people know what happened, let's not focus on it.  Keep things on the bright side.

Yeah, also lots of help. I think the problem is just that religion is too sensitive to be discussed on the Internet. A few weeks ago another member went too far about religion too and he got a ban too. This is not SirCmpwn, nor the other person. It's just something a lot of people are very opinionated about. Bashing a religion or atheism is the exact same thing as bashing an entire nation or ethnic group, to some people. On the old Omnimaga board it was forbidden to discuss religion, because it only caused problems. We removed the rule to reduce censorship, but lately we had 4 religion threads that turned out bad, so I considered brigning back that rule.

@Hot Dog yeah I agree. I wish him good luck about whatever he decides in the future. I hope he stays, though. As for telling what happened it was inevitably gonna be told, but I was against putting it in the first post, because it would have appeared directly on the front page.

EDIT: On a side note I relocated his project sub-forums from the Our projects section to the Major TI community projects one. Otherwise they remain intact.

Free speech... it's fun, but can lead to lots of problems if you don't respect other's opinions.

Hope Sir didn't got disgusted of Omnimaga or even calc stuff after his ban.

Yeah this is the issue with it. I would like full free speech here, but some people may use it at other people's expense, or not be careful about how they use it. This is why despite the fact we do not delete legit topic and posts, we still have rules disallowing some stuff.

And yeah I hope. The exact same thing happened to Stefan Bauwens earlier this month and Ashbad a few months ago, and they came back a few days later. I think this should be taken as a lesson. Nobody is perfect.

Yes, many people have strong views about religion. But people make mistakes sometimes. WE all have a right to sometimes rant unacceptably, infact it's quite inevitable.

Just to put my view in here. The internet is where I go to forget the prejudices of normal life. What is great about that is that you don't have to reveal your religion, gender, sexual preferences, wealth, social status, appearance, and/or political orientation. And even if you do reveal information about yourself, you shouldn't have to face any of the persecution of normal life as this is a place where we forget our own opinions and are respectful and tolerant to others. I try to keep my own information rather secretive because I don't want people to judge me because of my beliefs. I want to be known for only my programming ability and not my religious affiliation. IRL I'm a very strong opinioned person, but over here I forget all of that because this isn't the place to discuss such issues.

And just if you want to know here is a little bit of information about me. I don't really mind about the whole internet privacy thing. Some of things you wouldn't of guessed because I don't normally reveal this in my posts.

Spoiler For info:
My name is Jack Moore, but you can call me z80man. I'm male, but you probably knew that already. I live in Orange County, California and go to Santa Margarita Catholic High School. So yes going to a private school means I do come from a wealthy background but so what. You could also probably tell from my school name that I am a Christian and quite devout too. Politically I am a member of the Republican Party and I align myself as a conservative. Don't take me as a greedy person because of this. I don't agree with everything my party says and as a Christian I feel the need to help the poor. You could say I'm a grassroots which means I support community led charity projects as opposed to big-government welfare payments. I just find that through the government there is too much corruption with all the big salaries and pensions that congressmen take for themselves. I'd rather take an active role in the cause and see to it that all the money goes to the right place. I also have plans to join the Navy later on due to my patriotism and devotion to the USA. Back on the topic of religion I am very tolerant there which makes me different from most conservatives. For example I have no idea why Christians and Muslims have to fight so much. The Old Testament even prophesizes the founding of Islam when Abraham has his first son Ishmael. I find this reason to believe that Muslims are justified in there belief and that both religions should live in peace. And then with Atheists, I do not oppose them at all. Some of my best friends are atheist and we get along fine. In fact some atheists have even solidified my own belief through intellectual discussion. (of course this isn't the place have this ;))

So I hope that no one has a negative opinion of me now because of who I am and if you do this is the reason why I kept it hidden for so long. These opinions will never come up again as I'm only saying this once and never again. Lastly I will restate that we need to keep our opinions away from omni as this is where many people come to seek refuge from their hellish life.

I'm very sad to hear about this demotion.=/ I hope Sir comes back and rejoins the team. I really do empathize with his situation, and I hope in the future these problems can be avoided. Religious discussion can be a very touch topic, especially because everyone has their own view point.

I wish omni could be a place where we could discuss touchy topic likes religion, but in truth nowhere on the internet is that a good place unless you set up a completely private board for it with only people you trust.
