Title: SpyBot45 Cemetech & UTI notifications disabled
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 21, 2010, 03:20:51 am
From now on, SpyBot45 will only notify our #omnimaga IRC (and OmnomIRC) users of new posts in Omnimaga forums. Until tonight, it also did United-TI and Cemetech. It also used to do TI-Freakware and MaxCoderz, but were later disabled due to errors.

The reason why Cemetech and United-TI feeds were disabled were mostly due to bandwidth issues and decreased reliability of the bot in the process. Another reason is that with about 300-500 posts being reported per day for Cemetech and Omnimaga combined, it was starting to make #omnimaga channel and especially OmnomIRC extremly hard to use, especially during busy periods. It came to the point where some people simply stopped using #omnimaga for discussion or set the bot on their ignored user list, no longer getting anymore notifications, even from Omnimaga. This also made the logs very hard to read.

So in summary, from now on, SpyBot45 will only notify our IRC/OmnomIRC users of new posts on Omnimaga forums. We are sorry for the inconveniences this might cause.

Since Cemetech IRC channel already had a similar service for their website for several years, those who want to continue getting notified of new posts there can always join their channel or use their chatbox. Keep in mind that we do not hold responsible for what content can be posted outside our channel and forums, though.

UPDATE: (Aug 23rd 2010) KermMartian has finally put saxjax in our channel with limited functionalities (only post notifications), so basically if you do not want to see notifications for one of the websites, you do not have to disable all notices for both site. All you do is type "/ignore botname" for the bot you wish to hide messages from. This should also split bandwidth usage between both sites and make the Omnimaga bot development much easier. There are also chances that SpyBot45 will be replaced by another bot.

That's understandable. A lot of the time I'll look at OmnomIRC and see only SpyBot messages x.x
Plus it eliminates having to be reminded of a new post on cemetech twice. :)

Sorry to hear about this; I felt it was a good service in bringing the two sites closer together.

yeah, it's a bit sad, but it is a justifiable reason

Could a link to Cemetech be added somewhere on the site, then? You see, what I've been doing was to go to Omnimaga, then use a link in OmnomIRC to jump to Cemetech in a new tab. It more convenient than opening two tabs and going to both sites...

I thought about having a link to other forums on our front page. We already kinda have a Cemetech link, but it's not directly to the site front page, but rather Source Coder 2 (in the MISC page) If I add a link section it would be located in a block below the top posters and the radio link. I am not sure about which forum besides Cemetech, TIBD, UTI and TI-BANK to include, yet, though. Ticalc.org is going there, that's for sure.

Ooh, just noticed today that saxjax is on #omnimaga. That's a good idea :)

Yeah and apparently SpyBot45 might go into Cemetech channel but I wasn't sure. It should split the bandwidth costs between both sites, plus, since both notifiers are separate, if you absolutely don't want to see Cemetech notices or if you don't post on Omni much and only want Cemetech notices, you just have to ignore one of teh bot, without having to ignore both site notifications at once.

As for UTI, I have doubts the feed will ever come back because just UTI alone took half of the bandwidth, even thought it checked for new posts 20 times less often than Cemetech. The reason why is because UTI has no RSS feed so the bot needed to reload the active topics page every 5 minutes, while for Cemetech/Omni, all that had to be reloaded was a tiny RSS feed.

Also there are chances that SpyBot45 is replaced with another bot by Alberthro, but it's not confirmed yet.

I will probably try to find a way to spread the word about /ignore feature, to make sure new people know faster

SpyBot45's been replaced by OmnomBot, a bot that alberthro wrote. I'm currently hosting it for #Cemetech and #Omnimaga.

On another note, I've done a few bugfixes for OmnomIRC, mainly with how it parses colors. It should look a little cleaner, and I removed that pesky '<' that was always showing up on the first line. Also, posts now just show on their own, I've removed the <saxjax> and <OmnomBot> tags infront of the post names.

Edit: OmnomIRC now resets 270 seconds after the last message sent, instead of 270 seconds after it's loaded.

Excelent, nice updates Netham and Alberthro!  And thats also neat to hear about the bandwidth sharing, and the features it enables :)

Very nice Netham45, Alberthro and Kerm :)

Now it should split the bandwidth between two sites and with both bots separate, I think they should be easier to modify if needed.

At one point, it would be nice for Netbot45 to notify people on join about how to enable/disable notifications, for people who don't want to see them. Something like "Welcome to Omnimaga IRC channel. To disable post notifications from either OmnomBot or saxjax, set an /ignore on the bot you want to hide them from (check your client readme)."

Some people may not like those bots, but are not aware it is possible to hide messages from them. The only problem is that if you frequent #cemetech, then you won't see chat from people using Cemetech's site chatroom. I think some client lets you ignore bots/users per channel, though.

I wondered what was going on with the bot since Omnom was reporting posts differently since I came back. RIP Spybot45. :*(
Nice job with the bandwidth spliting and what not. How come it posts topics as tinyurl links though?

It makes post notices much smaller on IRC. Else it wrapped on two lines of text on some screen resolutions and took too much space. Cemetech saxjax bot, which was added to Omni channel (the tradeoff being OmnomBot being put in #cemetch) had this for over a year now. SpyBot used to do so, too, but it often gave the wrong TinyUrls and once, instead of landing on the right post, I landed on a porn site.

Also Omnom is supposed to be OmnomBOt and its nickname truncated from OmnomIRC, but for odd reasons, the copy Netham45 is hosting broke and he didn't bother to fix it. Alberthro loaded a backup bot for the time being. He used a different nick due to omnomBot still being online for odd reasons.

O_o wow...
Yeah, that's the purpose of URL shorteners ;D

One concern I had a while ago is tinyurl banning saxjax due to overuse, but from what I've seen, it doesn't seems like they care much, so I guess it's fine if we use them. Keep in mind back then Cemetech was getting 50 posts a day, though. Now they average at 150 and we average at 240, so that's a lot of tinyURLs in one day, especially if a period of the day is busier than usual. :P

hmm, a problem is that SAX takes a tiny url from omnombot and turns that into a tinyurl

I get an error

I don't think SAX chat is even supposed to show Omnom notices, though. They only show up in the channel, since the SAX chat is a slim box and it would make it even more cluttered.

Also the bot is gone from #cemetech until Netham45 fixes some stuff.

It would have been hilarious if it landed on

The bad part tho would be if it landed on a virus
