Title: The future of #omnimaga
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 18, 2009, 08:15:34 pm
As many of you noticed, #omnimaga was invite-only for the past hour or so, with the possibility of it remaining this way for good. The reason for this decision was due to a recurrent problem with an unusual amount of people causing trouble from mid-November to mid-March. this happens every year since the channel exists. The only difference with this year is that instead of some users from other channels causing trouble, it was our own ones. I will not name anyone, but some people might actually be aware of who. This this becomes out of control everytime of this year and during most of the winter, making the channel management and moderation impossible, this have made me wonder about the future of this #omnimaga.

Due to requests, I am not going to let the channel closed for now. However, until April 2010, anyone causing trouble in the channel, such as breaking our rules or attempt at starting fights, even if it involves just bringning private convos into public on purpose, will lead to an instant ban if the person was previously warned or banned about it. No more warnings if you were, before. November to April seems like a troll season, but unlike the 4 previous years the #omnimaga channel existed, we are no longer tolerating this. One year, it leaded to Omnimaga demise (if anyone remembers what happened to the old forums) and the year prior that, it also went pretty close. We will not tolerate any of that anymore and we will take earlier precautions before it goes out of hand.

Unless things won't go back to normal this Spring, our rules enforcements will be done this way afterward too. Our rules will be applied like usual on the forums, since we tend to not have as many problems over here. However, if we started to have any, we will do the same as on IRC. If things were to go from bad to worse, we could also go as far as making #omnimaga invite-only until April as well as disabling registrations completly on the forums (which we done, before). On top of that, if things were to get worse enough and not stop, we will resort to just letting #omnimaga open from April 1st to October 31st every year. Outside that period, we always seems to end up with more problems than anything else.

Also, on a less on-topic note, we would like to remind visitors that registering multiple accounts to yourself is against our forum rules and that bumping old threads for no reason can be considered as spam.

Sorry for the inconveniences this might have caused, and thanks for understanding and cooperating.

Hmmm, this I think is better then a total close down of the channel. I was wondering...how would I get invited if I was on my iPod because I can't do any of the/ commands unless I use mibbit, which really fails...

umm suggestion for cases like eeems nest time we go +i (hopefully not for a long time) make #omnijoin with jarvis or netbot or `-` to give +e to those who need it?? aka easier to use than pming XD

if i set someone +e, it remains this way until I remove that -e manually. basically the person will be able to join whenever he wants until his IP changes

Sweet :D
yeah, I've been getting into more arguement with my rents then normal...and I talk Tony gf everyday, and of course she takes priority over irc. Also my irc client for my iPod is really annoying and limiting...and production time for my play is coming up in a few weeks. I've also got wrestling every Monday, Wednesday, and most Fridays.

Eeems, you wrestle??? I do too, and i have practice everyday, and most of the time even saturdays.
yeah those things take too much time and we tend to have no time at all for any other projects

What is the episode about? Because first, I don't watch South Park much, since I don't have cable TV, and secondly, the website says it is restricted from viewing in my country due to copyrights restriction

Just go to www.southparkstudios.com and that site will redirect you to your countries site, then go to the episode guide > season 13> W.T.F.

It's about wrestling (they think it's gay) and about this: http://www.wwe.com/

Just so you know, I have noticed quite a lot of spam lately in #omnimaga. I am posting this here because it always happens while I am gone and today it went quite a lot out of control. Some stuff you may want to know:

-When you spam a lot, people questions are missed due to the wall of text. It also prevent any constructive discussions from occuring.
-Admins doesn't have to be there during the spam attach to apply any punishment. IRC logs also work. ;)
-Abuse of spam gives Omnimaga a bad reputation, a reputation of spammers and worse. This is why, while not forbidding it completly, I prefer that spam stays to a minimum. By abuse of spam, I cite around 13:32 through 15:01 as an example, in this log: http://netham45.org/irc/EfNet/view.php?log=omnimaga.20101016
-If you absolutely feel like spamming like crazy, we have a forum section for that and you can join another channel like #spamspamspam .
-Impersonating other people is against the rules. Doing it in mass scale is even worse, because it gets confusing. This is why I am posting a warning here, because I do not know who spammed anymore this afternoon. Log: http://netham45.org/irc/EfNet/view.php?log=omnimaga.20101016
-When you change your nickname in #omnimaga, it also changes in every IRC channel you joined on that server. This means #cemetech, #ti, #tcpa and whatever other channel you're in will get flooded by nick changes. Hence why JoeYoung joined to tell people to stop. Not that he was even supposed to join but he got a point :P.
-Unnoficial bots are not allowed. One copy of spybot45 is enough, too.
-To post logs or source code longer than 9 lines, use http://omnimaga.pastebin.com or the forums.

In other words, spam is fun, but too much is not, and the rules still applies while no admins are around. The channel is logged, after all :P .

I am posting this in this topic because since 2005 I noticed that during Fall around here, there's an unusual increase in spam or trolling on IRC.

Interesting... I wonder who did that.../me whistles... :P
But in all seriousness, I agree. Let's not let that happen again. Keep that on #thebot or somewhere spammy. :)

Yeah such bot would be best kept for other channels like #thebot.

This is why when spam seems to last for a short while I try to make people stop because otherwise it gets out of control. This was nothing compared to what happened in 2006, though (Randomist and Cure777 got banned from #omnimaga, #unitedti, #lobby then G-lined from the Dragon-Fire network for endless spamming one night. The next year, Randomnist kept testing scripts and ignoring warnings to make him stop. He got banned from #omnimaga, #unitedti, #tcpa, #calcgames and I think even #cemetech. Getting banned from #omnimaga and #tcpa at the same time was something very rare.

Another thing I am noticing lately is that it seems people are kinda pushy about trying to make me change my way of running stuff like contests and rules. I even saw accusations that we were fighting against Cemetech on IRC, which is not even the case. I am starting to wonder if the later isn't partly due to the nick changes that occurs in #omnimaga sometimes. It can be seen as trolling elsewhere.

alberthro, oh yeah, fun times :)

@Dj_omni, yeah, I know, it was getting annoying how people were acting that omni and cemetech were competitors and enemies or something >.<

im glad at leat I wasn't part of *that* conversation when it took place x.x/me took part out of 2/3 bad mishaps on #omnimaga
yeah also I don't really tend to join other channels due to the nature of my client (the window system makes it kinda hard to make more than 2 channels enjoyable at the same time) so good thing i wasn't in like #cemetech during the nick flood :s
