Title: The Great Axe Wiki Spring Cleaning
Post by: Juju on March 24, 2012, 11:34:47 pm
Spring just arrived this week, unfortunately spambots invaded Axe Wiki (http://wiki.axe.omnimaga.org) which has been pretty much abandoned, so I hereby declare the Great Axe Wiki Spring Cleaning open. How you can help?

1. Register. Much like WikiTI, registrations and guest editing has now been disabled. To create an account, you must PM a SysOp (any Omnimaga staff who have an account there) with your desired username and your email address. CoT, ARS and Managers automatically gets Bureaucrat or SysOp access.
2. Delete spam. You don't need any special access to undo edits, so you can help deleting spam.
3. Contribute. If you have a routine you want to share or you want to document a command, feel free to do so. The more content the wiki has, the more useful it is.
4. Help. If you have an idea for the wiki, such as a MediaWiki plugin, contact me and I can install it.

Please help the Axe Wiki to get cleaner and more useful for everyone. Of course, most of those principles also applies to the Prizm Wiki (http://prizmwiki.omnimaga.org). Thank you for your time.

As suggestions:

-It would be best to limit the cleaning to known members. If a new member signs up here and he has no trace of activity anywhere else such as Cemetech, it's best to not take any chance, in case, especially that now some people get paid to spam sites as replacement to bots.
-Give up on the wiki anti-spam mod idea. If you find a good one, one week later bot software makers will have figured out how to bypass it already. It would be best to either
  *Disable registrations permanently
  OR
*Do what Cemetech did with their Prizm Wiki and link wiki accounts directly to the forums (in which case a wiki move to Netham45 server would be required, along with extra work from him)

Anyway I'm glad this is not officially abandonned. I worried it was when I saw it getting spammed and nothing was being done. This most likely discouraged people from updating the Axe info. X.x

Yeah, I didn't even bothered looking at the anti-spams tonight, I just did like WikiTI and disabled registrations, so the cleaning is limited to Omnimaga users. Since the registration involves an admin, it's pretty easy to accept or refuse people from registering. Linking the Omni accounts with the wiki accounts like on Cemetech might be nice though, if possible.

Oh wow I wanted to delete spam and do something ages ago but didn't know how. Now I can! I shall happily do so!
EDIT: The current users are still going to create spam. How can we help to delete these accounts?
EDIT2: How do we delete pages?
EDIT3: The pages cannot be undoed easily as trying to go back several undos at once usually comes up with the message "the page could not be undoed as there are several conflicting intermediate edits" or something!

What the hell am I meant to do if I can't really participate in Axe Wiki Spring Cleaning! ???

EDIT4: You can use this page here to find most offending pages:

EDIT5: Left some notes on your talk page: http://wiki.axe.omnimaga.org/wiki/User_talk:Juju2143

Sorry I can only blank pages at the moment. That's the best I can do.

I'll figure out how to make you delete pages and block users.

Edit: There we go. Added some rights to Bureaucrats and made Jonius7 one.

Yeah it would be good to add rights to some trusted users, if they are willing to help cleaning things up.

Also it would be good to delete all accounts except legit users, because some might post later (yesterday there was new spam, even though the wiki has been locked down the day before)

I'm not 100% if we can delete them, but we can block accounts, definitely.
And thank you Juju. I will do my best to use my power for the greater good!
I've blocked the user that was just posting spam a few minutes to a few hours ago.

Also I hope everyone who has an account on the wiki has the username the same as here on the Omnimaga forums, so we can recognise not to delete/block your account.

Am I the only one besides the admins currently doing something for the Axe Wiki? We need more people to clear this mess!

There we go, you're Bureaucrat too. And MediaWiki forces everything to have an uppercase first.

Cleaned out every single spam page that was left. Check it:

That was a lot of button pressing  :'(

If removing spam is too much work, another solution could be to just backup the actual Axe pages and main page (and images), delete everything then reinstall Mediawiki from scratch and restore the pages.

That might be indeed a good idea.

That won't happen unless you give him access to your account. The Wiki is now invite-only.
