Title: The lost game, Illusiat 11: Kin Master Quest, has been found again!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 05, 2012, 01:50:45 am
The game that was once thought to be lost forever has been re-located: Illusiat 11: Kin Master Quest (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=838)!

(http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/illusiat11kmq.gif) (http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/illukmqanim.gif)

Finished back in September 2006, this modified version of the 2002 Illusiat 11 (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=187) was meant to be released for the 5th anniversary of the Illusiat series, but for some reasons its release was postponed until August 2007. Although the game story is exactly the same as the original, the 68 random enemies that you can encounter are much stronger (although their LV is still the same), meaning that they are much harder to defeat, although they give more experience and gold. Despite the LV cap and the higher reward from enemies, some can now be a rude challenge, because of the way enemy stats are generated (dynamically, each enemy type having its own formulas) in this game. In addition to that, after you learn your first two battle skills (the ability to use items and magic), the LV count required to learn the rest gets increasingly higher than in the 2002 release of the game:

Code: [Select]
COMMAND | I11 | KMQ | DESCRIPTION
--------+-----+-----+--------------------------------------------------
ITEMS   | 2   | 2   | Allow using items in battle
MAGIC   | 5   | 5   | Allow using magic in battle
TECH.   | 9   | 10  | Allow using techniques in battle
SCAN.   | 14  | 18  | View enemy LV, HP, Exp, GP, weaknesses
2 CMD   | 20  | 30  | Allow equipping two battle command instead of one
WARP    | 27  | 47  | Escape from non boss fights
MONEY   | 35  | 70  | Throw money at enemy to cause damage

Back in 2010, there were plans to release an even harder version of the game where experience and gold gained from harder enemies is reverted back to the 2002 values and in such update the bosses would see an increase in difficulty (except that one sadistic boss in chapter 5). Unfortunately it was discovered at the time that the game was missing from Omnimaga archives and my computer hard drives so it was thought that this version of Illusiat 11 was completely lost. This pretty much put an end to any plan for an update.

Tonight, after looking through old DVDs containing copies of my older songs, files and random stuff, I finally found a copy of the game.

So after 4 and half a year (and ironically, right during the original release's 10th anniversary), Illusiat 11: Kin Master Quest is once again available to play! Of course keep in mind that the original version of this game was released way back in October 2002, years before CODEX, XCOPY, xLIB and Celtic III even existed, let alone Axe Parser, so the ASCII-art tilemap and sprites might turn away the newer TI community members that have been used to fancy grayscale scrolling graphics that are very common since the last two years. However, if you feel nostalgic or missed the game release during its short stay (http://z9.invisionfree.com/omnimaga/index.php?showtopic=1639) on the old Omnimaga board and want to play Illusiat 11 in that alternate form, you can download it below!

Huzzah! Illusiat 11 is one of my favorite calculator games, and I've always wanted to try Kin Master Quest, and now I can!

By the way I might actually do a bestiary of both games at one point if I am kinda bored. I already have the boss bestiary on paper somewhere and a jpg of it, but not the enemies.

I am interested in how many monsters actually ended up with more HP than the final boss <_< (I'm not sure if I actually put in the LV 99 cap O.O)

Thanks lol. :D

Also after further investigation, enemy LV returns to Illusiat 11 value after stats are calculated, so the LV is the same but they're far stronger. I know one monster in Forgotten Grave has about 300000+ HP. The Money ability will definitively come handy at the end :P (it ignores every defense)

We can do that in that game?? O.o

Actually in Illusiat 11, the money command is inspired directly from Final Fantasy VI and VII coin toss battle abilities, where you throw money at enemies to cause damage (in FFVII case, you can choose the amount). I don't remember if Final Fantasy VIII and IX had it.

Sweet to see that you've found this one again... I would try it, but I've never even managed to complete the original :P

Actually the original isn't too hard really except maybe the optional bosses and the boss in Chapter 3 before you fall inside a lava dome (he attacks 5 times per turn and you can't defeat him unless you have TECH equipped and spam Trimag every turn). The Vulcan optional battle is hard because if you hit him while he's invisible, his LV increases by 5 each time and his startup LV is already high to begin with. As for the final chapter optional boss... well... it's pretty much a luck-based battle lol (you can end up using Elixir like 20 turns in a row before you have a chance to land an hit).

Hmm that reminds me... since sometimes Omni is short on contests ideas... what about a contest where people have to optimize Illusiat 11: Kin Master Quest (which uses mostly 2002 code) so that it is as small as possible without losing much speed, and the one who ends up with the smallest version wins. (afterward maybe the code of each version could be analyzed publicly to see if optimizations from one version or another can be merged together?)

That is a really neat idea, DJ! Most contests focus on just getting something done, but a large part of programming is optimisation. I think Runer or Weregoose would win for sure :P

I remember in 2005 there was some sort of mini contest thing as a sub-part of a topic where we posted a small piece of code that was like 40 bytes and I ended up winning. Two years later or so, or maybe today, I'm sure I would have been last, because of how much was discovered since then O.O

By the way, I just realized that when I made those screenshots, I forgot to disable MathPrint. The game is much faster with MathPrint disabled. <_<

And I had to slow down animations with For loops so that they are visible at all on faster calcs :P (walking is at max speed in that game of course, though)
