Title: The REAL contest results are in!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 12, 2010, 04:35:42 pm
(http://www.omnimaga.org/images/omni2010contestlogo.gif)

At last, the Axe Parser Programming Contest results are finally available! We would like to thank you for your patience while we were judging the contest entries and preparing the results and to everyone who both participated to the contest and the survey.

The Axe Parser Programming Contest is the Omnimaga contest that received the highest participation rate so far with a total of 13 entries, the second being the March 2006 pixel-art contest (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=16), which received 9. Despite Axe language being very new, RAM clears and other factors, we manage to have 9 more entries than the 2009 Omnimaga programming competition (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=20), which gave participants 2 additional weeks to work on their entry compared to this year.

Many of the entries were great, either by the fact they were polished very well or the fact they were worked on in an incredibly small amount of time (sometimes a few hours). However, we had to declare a winner, a 2nd place and a 3rd place entry, so during the survey, 50 members voted for their favorite entries, while me, Quigibo and Builderboy tried to judge every entry on 5 points, attempting at finding as many flaws as possible in each game to prevent scores from being even. Games were judged on originality, gameplay/controls, graphics, entertainment value and useability. So now here comes the 3 winners, from 3rd place to 1st!

-3rd place was a "battle royale" between 3 entries: Jump, Splut and Simul, all of which received the same amount of votes. Jump, by ztrumpet, did not have a score as high during judging, but was still only 28 points behind the 3rd place winner. In Splut case, it went extremly close to win. In fact, it would have won if it was not a team project. Due to the contest rules, a penalty was given on his originality score as he did not make the game levels himself, although the penaltiy was not very high since the code was all written by himself. Because of that, his entry ends up falling 2 points behind Simul. This means that Deep Thought wins the 3rd place prize of the contest: a $25 online gift card (iTunes, Amazon, Newegg or another online store of his choice)

-2nd place came to Michael Lee's Axe Minesweeper clone, which managed to do extremly well on every points even thought there were bugs reported by the author. Finally the bugs did not hinder gameplay and judges had an hard time triggering them. He attempted to submit a newer version shortly before the deadline, but the file did not successfully go through. However, it did not stop him from scoring in the 500s (out of 600) and win the 2nd place prize: a $50 online gift card!

-1st place was a battle royale between the contest judges and the Omnimaga community. Despite having suffered a major data loss a few months ago and not finishing his entry either, the author still managed to achieve something of high quality before the deadline. Due to some control issues, his entry did not score as high as the 3rd and 2nd place during the judging process, but it drew a lot of attention on the public side and it became the Omnimaga community favorite contest entry, with a total of 8 votes. With 21.5 more points than Minesweeper, we are proud to announce that the winner of Omnimaga contest is Wacky Fun... er... I mean Advance Wars TI, by SirCmpwn! He wins the 1st place prize, which is a $100 online gift card!

Click here for more details (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=21)

The winners will need to PM me on the forums to get their online prize (and choose for which store they want it) so I can start the delivery process.

In addition to that, some banners will be made for various contest participants: 3 for the winners, one for everyone who participated, two for the highest votes and two for the highest judge scores.

More stuff might come out soon, such as comments on each entries by the judges. They will be posted in this topic later. We would like to thank everyone for participating and we wish we could give more prizes this year, considering the high participation to this contest. We hope to organize future contests in the future.

Congratulations to the winners!

How did WFRNG come second to last?
I have no clue. I am not surprised it got votes, though, considering the original WFRNG initially won a POTM award on ticalc.org (although it was later changed). Initially it had 2 votes, though, then someone voted for it at last minute.

Also darn Ikkerens you should have made all Splut levels yourself, you may have triggered a tie-breaker poll with 3rd place. I think another thing that did not help, though, is that a lot of people could not figure out what to do in the game so they voted for something else x.x. It's personally one of my favorite entry too.

Now you can see what difference there can be between rating a program technically and based on personal preferences. I wanted both judges and community to vote, though. Cemetech does the former and ticalc.org does the later. In 2009 some people complained about the former, though, but on the other hand, we did not want entries to be graded only based on preferences. We had in mind to make the community rate each program on various points like judges did, but it would have been too hectic for users (it took me 4 hours to judge entries and that excludes trying them)

Now I need contest banners... (1st place winner, 2nd place, 3rd place, contest participant and maybe two for the highest judging scores, considering two of the highest judged entries did not win)

Congratulations to the winners! And to those whose entries were featured on ticalc.org!

Any ideas as to what the next Omnimaga contest might be, if there is another one next year?

Not sure yet, but it might either be another axe contest or a BASIC, ASM, Axe and hybrid contest. The later may be hectic, though x.x

Also fun facts about the 2010 contest:

-Quigibo misspelled SirCmpwn nickname as SirCpwin in his judging results file. A prelude to SirCmpwn victory?
-Michael_Lee nickname was obliterated as well, same for Sir's contest entry name. SirCmpwn is definitively not 100% lucky. D:
-We almost got a second Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator clone before the deadline, by Calcdude84se.
-All but 2 entries were submitted 24 hours before the deadline. The week before, we got worried this contest would be a failure.
-We went close to have a tie-breaker poll between Ikkerens and Deep Thought entry.

You should do a 68k contest, to try and bring back the 68k community.

Yeah someone suggested that on ticalc for our 2 contests. It might encourage 68K users to join too. It would certainly be a game contest, though.

Congratulations to all the participants for having the discipline to turn something in. You beat me at that point already :), Second, Congratulations to the prize winners, well deserved! And last but not least I still, with all respect, feel it's a little awkward that WFRNG was above the Mansion Impossible, IMHO it should be vice versa...however if this is the decision of the judges and of the voters (of which I am one) then so be it, it doesn't really matter :). Ooh and @guy, don't be discouraged by this! As I said in the beginning of this post, you actually turned something in which is more then I have done :P!

Congrats to all the participants, especially Sir, Michael, Deep, and Ikkerens. ;D  Nice job!  * ZTrumpet hopes Sir, Michael, and Deep spend their money wisely. :)

After seeing the originality results, I would like to know how mine varies so much (it got 8, 8, and 18) and how Sir's (14, 15, and 19) stayed so high for being a ported game.  Don't think I have the wrong intentions (I think Sir deserved to win), but isn't Advanced Wars a port?

----Jump! Fun Facts----
The idea for this entry came just after I read Finale TI's post about that he wouldn't be entering Nostalgia, 7 hours before the deadline.
I finished checking Omni then I wrote the main game engine.  This took about 2 hours.
Next I think I did my homework and other chores.  I came back to work on the Main Menu.
Everything worked with about 3 hours to go except high score saving.  I implemented it and it crashed.  I revised the code and it crashed.  Then it crashed some more.
I gave up and went to bed an hour before the deadline.  I couldn't fall asleep and kept thinking about Jump!  I suddenly remembered one of Builderboy's posts referring to confusion on Copy()rThis was also my mistake.
With 4 minutes to spare, I got out of bed, changed the code, and entered it.  This is Jump's journey to the contest. ;D

how come you got the idea when you read that Nolstalgia wasn't going to be entered?  or was it a coincidence?

and also, I remember reading somewhere that DJ said since there's never been a Advanced Wars port, it wouldn't affect originality some much, but idk why yours is so varied.

Title: Re: The REAL contest results are in!
Post by: guy6020665 on October 12, 2010, 06:22:59 pm
I think each vote got multiplied by 32.5 to use 300 as the highest in order to make the poll and judging 50/50

Sir got 8 votes, 300/8=32.5

I'm not sure anymore, but if there's already an AWTI clone for calcs, I don't think SirCmpwn entry would have been affected very much in terms of originality compared to if it was a tunnel game or a snake game, for example. Of course it depends of judges opinions, though. For example, in splut I had troubles with controls, but maybe another staff was fine.

I will probably post the scores with review in detail in one single post later. Also, votes were capped at 300 points. If WFRNG got 50 votes and everything else 0, WFRNG would only have gotten 300 points. This was to prevent the survey from affecting judging way too much. If an entry got 15 votes because people loved it but lacked any originality and stuff and was mostly made by someone else and required too much help, it would kinda be weird if it still managed to win anyway. Plus this resulted the risks of seeing WFRNG win :P (I know ppl could have voted for it for the lulz because it's a meme/joke)

Congratulations to all of the winners and all of the contestants alike!  All of you behave admirably and produced awesome programs :) It was very interesting to see the differences between the pole and the judges, as well as the differences between the judges themselves ^^

And i think there would be a lot more Unhappy people if WFRNG had won :P I personally think Mansion was far better (no offense to the WFRNG of course :P)
Yeah same here :P

As for TravisE I think it might be best that the entries get finished (or close) before a feature.

It would be cool if people uploaded their entries to our download section once finished too.

I blame a faulty "input" command :(

Congratulations to the winners! We had some really nice entries! :D

yes! congrats to the winners! It was really fun to join the contest, but I made a way too large game, and therefore I couldn't finish it. I will recreate HoMM, since I think it's a great game, but as it says in my signature, I'll first create a program for school, and then start HoMMfC again. Are there anyway people around here who managed to get my game on their calcs? I couldn't manage to get SirCmpwn's game oncalc. But that's perhaps my own fault. I hope there will be some smaller contests sooner or later as I read somewhere on the forum (I don't remember where it was exactly), but I'm not discouraged by this (epic) fail :P (for me)

Okay, some reviews:

THEaxeGamePack
This was one of my favorites.  I liked how most of the games were completely original and others took otherwise simple games and added some twists to them.  Especially the pseudo-3D paddle game was pretty impressive with the scaling sprite sizes.  The main downside though is that the games tend to get repetitive after a while with no change in difficulty as you progress (as far as I could tell).  But overall this was a very enjoyable pack of games with simple but effective graphics.

Jump!
For a last minute entry this felt surprisingly playable, I couldn't believe it that it was completed in such a short amount of time!  I did feel that it borrowed a lot from the impossible game though (including nearly identical sprites) except that it runs on randomly generated levels and lacks the obstacles.  It was fun to play but after a while but also gets repetitive.  Sometimes it seemed like I had a was supposed to land a jump but still fell through the cracks somehow.  Overall, it was a very simple game (maybe a little too simple) but still manages to provide some entertainment.

Blur
Blur is essentially another tunnel game, but it goes a little further with changeable ships, some animations, and multiple highscores.  The game was surprisingly polished meaning that there were very few bugs or things that distracted gameplay.  Of problems I did see though was that the run indicator was flashing in the menus and some of the controls felt a little inconvenient like pressing clear doesn't actually end the game, you have to navigate to the quit button.  For what it was though, I'd say it was done pretty well.

Minesweeper
Honestly probably the best minesweeper game for the 83/84 series calculators.  Although not much was added from the windows version other than the undo (although the mine field wrapping would have been really cool had that option been implemented).  The graphics were great in grayscale too and felt very natural with the controls when playing.  One thing I noticed though was that when you lose and want to retry, all the mines are shown at once and can spoil the fun of undoing and trying again since you know where they all are now.  This was another game I felt was very very polished and actually felt like a complete game.

By the way, my personal vote in the poll was for Simul because I had the most fun playing it (even if it wasn't the most elaborate entry) :)

In the game pack you could switch to turbo mode which ran much faster but it was super hard ;D

I hope all of the entries that were not finished will get finished soon :)

Now to setup the new forum group for winners (pink nickname)... (jk)

Thanks Quigibo. :)
I think I had the most fun playing Simul, AxePax, and the now completed version of Splut, even if they didn't win. ;D

I think in my case it was Space Dash, Splut, Axe Game pack as my 3 favorite, then came yours and the others, which I enjoyed quite a lot too, although I did not play updates a lot yet. I need to retry Minesweeper as the version I tried was 0.92. I was surprised at the awesomeness of many entries when they started arriving like crazy near the contest deadline.

@Quigibo,
Can I have your review on Splut too? Any constructive comments would be nice in improving the game and future games made by me.

In my case, the suggestions I gave for Splut in the judging review posted in another topic were applied/fixed in the ticalc release. The only thing I can find as suggestion right now is maybe add some new levels and maybe some enemies/spikes to kill you when moving on them :D

I would appreciate something more in-depth about AWTI, if the judges don't mind.

hey, thanks, quigibo!
yeah, the difficulty curves were either very slow or non-existent. i made the speed/cloudiness increase faster in the later release for M.D.T, but should probably fix it on the others as well.

Yunhua98 it would be even cooler if you actually used the ASCII art from the WFRNG readme :P

You can maybe resize the ASCII art :P
/me remembers back in the day he made a fake Nintendo DS game boxset for WFRNG

Tried that, eneded up with a jumbled mix of colors.  :P
lol about the DS
I also tried typing the ASCII art with size 1 font-size 3 font, it looked messed up.  :P
although WFRNG deserves a giant bag.  ;)

AH right x.x. Resizing can be a pain sometimes. I think one trick that works is to make the bg color the same as the bag before resizing, tho. That gets rid of the ugly white thing surrounding the text.

There was a badge/awards mod on SMF site released not so long ago, I tried it but it seemed to want to wreck the board files and didn't want to uninstall itself so I reverted the change
