Title: TI-83 Plus.fr secret finally revealed!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 21, 2013, 08:49:30 pm
A few weeks ago, a news (http://ourl.ca/18286) announced the upcoming redesign of the TI-83 Plus.Fr, now using a TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition case (except the screen).

TI-Planet has finally tested it to discover the mysteries of this unexpected arrival. As we already saw before, the calculator had a MathPrint OS, so it was thought that the TI-84 Plus in France might have joined the TI-82 STATS renaming bandwagon and have been renamed as the TI-83 Plus.Fr, but it was also thought that maybe, after 7 years, a new TI-83 Plus OS was about to come out.

Well... we finally have our answer:
(http://tiplanet.org/forum/gallery/image.php?mode=medium&album_id=47&image_id=2123) (http://tiplanet.org/forum/gallery/image_page.php?image_id=2123)

So basically, it is a TI-84 Plus inside a TI-84 Plus C Silver Case, that still shows the same model in the About screen... but in a really really consistent fashion, a different one on the calculator case.

For about $30 higher than this renamed TI-84 Plus, you can instead buy a... TI-84 Plus with no slide case. In fact, 2 years ago, Texas Instruments released the TI-84 Pocket.Fr (http://ourl.ca/9652), a redesigned TI-84 Plus that is as small as a TI-80, but had no slide case. In other words, in France there will now be two identical models available... and possibly no TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, as it is speculated on the web that Texas Instruments is not planning to commercialize the new color screen model there and release that redesigned TI-83 Plus.Fr instead, which looks identical except the name and screen.

Since it has only been 2 years since the Pocket version came out, it is unlikely that it will get replaced by this new version. However, it seems to follow the trend of the TI-82 Stats in terms of renaming. Will we ever see a TI-81 Stats?

Kind of funny how the french one has lowercase-labeled keys, and the english one the opposite :P
So the specs are the same as a normal 84+?

E: looks like the faceplate comes off, guess that's not an SE-exclusive feature anymore..

Why is there a slash through the 7 in the Plus.fr?
Is that just how the French do it? :P

I don't know, but when people write by hand I noticed that most do that too over here. Maybe it's more common in France and Quebec.

And yes, same as TI-84 Plus. Comes with Boot 1.03 and OS 2.55MP like the TI-84 Pocket.Fr.

Yeah, I dash my handwritten 7's too :P I guess it's pretty common in the French-speaking world.

I actually don't mind it. I find it way better than every TI-Nspire cases (although the CX was an huge improvement over the click/touchpad) and slightly better than the PRIZM. My only worry is how glossy it is: I fear that it might get scratched easily over the time.

Man, I guess you better watch out when buying a second hand color edition, guys.

Did they just send the 84 OS to the calc, and it worked?

Not only french. It seems to be a mostly european thing, from what I've seen

No, as strange as it is the TI-83+.fr is a TI-84+. TI just keeps making less and less sense these days. I don't get it. ???

Thank you DJ_O for adapting and posting the news here.

Note that unlike the TI-84+CSE, the TI-83+.fr keeps using the new TA1 ASIC with only 48KB RAM instead of 128KB on the older TA2/TA3 ASIC.

Order your calculators from France:
You'll get a TI-84+ at the price of a TI-83+ ;)

I think british people don't do it. My math teacher forced me to put it several years ago though, because that's how you do it in France, to avoid mistaking a 7 with a 1. :P

@critor: I may get a lower price, but shipping will still bite me in the ass. :P
