Title: TI-83 Plus moves to TI-84 Plus hardware worldwide !
Post by: critor on March 31, 2013, 05:58:22 pm
UPDATE (April 2nd): The worldwide 15 MHz 83+ was an April Fools joke (as did the Justin Bieber tribute and site name change). :P

In a previous news (http://ourl.ca/18286), we were testing the new TI-83 Plus.fr for back to school 2013 in France.

This new version will use the TI-84 Plus hardware and the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition case, bringing many improvements over the old TI-83 Plus.fr:

We now learn that this won't be limited to France. From back to school 2013, the TI-83 Plus distributed worldwide will move to the new TI-84 Plus hardware, and form a coherent TI-z80 line with the design of the new TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition! ;D(http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/default/images/gpbp_arrow_up.gif)

I also received a DVT prototype of this new TI-83 Plus, just for you! ;)

See you soon!

O.O

But will they rename the OS to 83+? ??? It makes to sense to call it TI-84 Plus if they're gonna rename the case TI-83 Plus.

It uses the original TI-84 Plus OSes. But as it comes with Boot Code 1.03, you can only use 2.55MP for now.
And yes, it does display 'TI-84' on the about screen.

But as TI-83 Plus are very popular, such a 'recasing' makes sense - TI just couldn't abandon the well-known "TI-83 Plus" name.

It's not the first time such a thing happends you know...

The last TI-81 with TOM V2.0x moved to a TI-82 hardware while still being called TI-81
The last TI-82 with ROM 19.006 moved to a TI-83 hardware while still being called TI-82.
The last TI-83 were renamed to TI-82 STATS and moved to a TI-83+ hardware.

It's about time. We assembly programmers can be grateful about having an excuse to drop support for the old TI-83+ hardware.

Ti is confusing... This doesn't make a whole bunch of sense to me to upgrade an already old line that had a successor that was extremely capable. Why can't we just drop 83 and move to 84 C ?

As suggested above, TI probably wants to retain the TI-83 Plus name that has remained the most popular graphing calculator for over a decade. Getting rid of the traditional TI-83 Plus hardware also lets them simplify manufacturing. It also lets them bring the joys (or lack thereof) of USB linking to the TI-83 Plus market. Perhaps TI will drop the TI-84 Plus non-SE, since the non-SE is now the same as the TI-83 Plus. And with any luck, TI will offer the new TI-83 Plus at the same price point as the old TI-83 Plus, a move they really should have made five years ago.

Dropping the B&W screen models seems like a bad idea for one simple reason. When was the last time you changed your calculator's batteries? The TI-84 Plus line is quite power efficient. The fact that students normally don't need to change or recharge their calculator every week is a major plus. Also, teachers giving exams are more likely to be able to provide a spare set of AAAs than a spare lithium-ion battery.

Love the calculator... Hate the case.

Back at TI:
Boss:"We need a revolutionary new calculator before back 2 school 2013. We don't have a lot of time on our hands."
Employee:"Let's put an 84+ inside a CSE case and call it the new 83+!"
*Standing ovation*

If it is a fake, it's interesting that they bothered to edit out the serial number from the case.

Yeah but they could have at least changed the RAM Clear and about screens so that it says TI-83 Plus (or since this might be fake, they could at least do it on the TI-83 Plus.Fr 2013 models, which are real, then say TI-83 Plus or TI-83 Plus.Fr on the About screen) or something like that. On the TI-82 Stats it doesn't say TI-83 on the self-test screen, for example, and when you install a TI-83 Plus OS on a TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, it doesn't say TI-83 Plus on it. Same goes for the 84+ series.

All the rumored new calculators is terribly hard to believe.
Especially when April Fools Day is the day we hear about it.
But yeah, sure. Photoshop SURE is fun

Have you tried the calculator with ASM programs or custom apps?  I have a bad feeling that it might ship with a new OS that disables assembly programs.  We all see how TI has gone with the nSpire.  :/

It has 2.55MP.

Asm programs just work as good (or as bad) as on TI-84+ with 2.55MP.

Are you sure that's not just for the prototypes?  I'd expect them to release 2.57 with such huge change in their calculator lineup.

And OS 2.71MP :P

Why not make a new (and probably more buggy) os? :P

I don't think anybody's said this explicitly yet: The TI-84+ series ASICs do not support the 512 K flash chip TI used for the TI-83+. Specifically, the (easily disabled) circuits that are supposed to censor the cryptographic certificate and prevent the boot code from being modified only support mapping 1, 2, 4, and 8 MB flash chips.

They must have done the same thing as they did when they switched the 84+ series to 48kb of RAM.

For that, they would have to hire the ones who beta-tested the OS used by the HP 39gII. :P It makes OS 2.71MP look stable (although at least it's much faster). O.O

Btw there was another prank about the color calc being released in France too. I wish it was real D: (currently, the 84+CSE is released everywhere but not France, which sucks because it would have an even larger userbase)
