Title: TI allows publishing Lua doc & community Lua game dev continues
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 25, 2011, 03:40:18 pm
Texas Instruments has allowed TI-BANK team to publish the official Lua documentation that was published by error a few days ago (http://ourl.ca/11150). It will be available at Inspired-Lua (http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=news&ac=commentaires&id=1121) soon. A wiki (http://wiki.inspired-lua.org/) has opened there as well.

In other news, Lua development continues to progress. Recently Levak has released a Lua Sudoku clone on TI-BANK, with menus and the ability to use the mouse as well.

You can download it here (http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=archives&ac=voir&id=3550).

I personally still think we need to remain a bit skeptical about them -- I have a feeling licenses will needed to develop anything, and only those who are beta testing on TI-BANK will get free ones.  Though please, anyone who knows differently (hopefully) correct me.

To be honest what I think is that the official SDK might not be free. This might be the main downside. In other words people may make a freeware one, then TI might try to block it to continue making money from theirs.

I suspect there will be another os update that will allow nspire to only run lua programs that have been sanctioned by ti.  That way they can keep their teacher customers happy.  Interesting that this all came about after a lot of people turned their attention to the Prizm and got programs up and running there (ya gotta lov C).  If I was ti, I'd be concerned to.

Well, the guy who leaked info and samples had a Tetris game, too, so in other words, they're not totally against gaming. I just fear only people with money will be able to develop for the Nspire and others will have to risk themselves on warez sites.

How do you get the sudoku game to start on the calculator? It only lets me type in numbers, but there isn't an actual game there.

Agreed. :P

Another big news!

TI has just granted us the right to host their official Lua tool ("Script_Tools.zip" file).
Which means you can now download it freely.
(although you may not rehost it or directly link it)

Who knows... this could be a sign of a new, more programmer-friendly TI!

we can hope pianoman. I not sure I'll trust them yet though. they have done too much bad recently

That's true... this could very well be a PR stunt to get us to shut up about the 3.0.1 bugs.

I liked 3.0.1 excpt for the bricking bugs and no ndless. It had nice 3d graphs LUA

3d graphs were/are pretty awesome.

Iloved the 3d graphs. before we had games they wwere good entertainment during math/science/other classes my teachers wouldn't complain about my calc in. One time in my English class my teacher confiscated my calc

Will 3.0.1 "brick" my calculator if I have TNOC'ed it and used Boot2 1.4?

Post by: ruler501 on May 25, 2011, 07:26:26 pm
It shouldn't, but I'm not sure I'd trust it if I were you.

No, if you TNOC'ed it you should be safe. I do not recommend OS 3.0.2, though, as I do not know if it's possible to downgrade from it yet.

Also I'm about to post a news about what Critor said above soon.

Post by: ruler501 on May 25, 2011, 07:32:25 pm
I wouldn't trust 3.0.1 it was TI's bug testing OS.
I'm not installing 3.0.2 til nleash comes to it

Post by: pianoman on May 25, 2011, 07:35:55 pm
Apart from the whole bricking thing and the downgrade protection, is there a discernable difference between 3.0.2 and 3.0.1?
I'm hoping to be able to avoid having the school upgrade my calc's OS.

there are some bug fixes with higher level math functions, and TI's new protection of LUA

But, as far as outward appearances go, no huge difference?

EDIT: 40th post! I can use OmnomIRC now :)

I'll just sit and wait, watching for TI's next move.
They will only be actually dev-friendly when they liberate the C programming for the nspire, with official support and a free SDK: that would be the cherry on the top of the cake. ;)

Assuming, of course, that this cake is not a lie.

they will be truly user friendly when we have their keys+Asm with SDK

I was not asking so much but that's ok... :P

Assuming, of course, that this cake is not a lie.
But the cake is a lie (or not, who knows...) and I can do nothing about that...

Talking about lies and cakes... you just gave me a hint for my signature...

I haven't tried this nor will since I don't use OS 3. Nevertheless, I'm really surprised to see TI making a sort of SDK for developers for the Nspire! I really hope this means a change in TI's routine (LOCK'EM NOW).

Texas Instruments has allowed TI-BANK team to publish the official Lua documentation that was published by error

Careful with saying. TI didn't allowed usto publish the documentation written by J.P but to use it to complete inspired-lua.org documentation with mention of this use.

How do you get the sudoku game to start on the calculator? It only lets me type in numbers, but there isn't an actual game there.

Use Ctrl+Menu
