Title: Upcoming site downtimes
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 18, 2010, 02:22:15 am
We will be experiencing sporadic website downtimes during the next week, as we relocate to a new hosting provider. Aside from a few exceptions, those downtimes, if they occur, should happen at night or during morning, so not too many people are affected at once. Normally, downtimes should be minimal, except when we will point the domain name to the new server.

Until the move is finished, we will not accept new files in the download section anymore and attachment uploads made after this news article is posted will be lost, so keep backups of them.

During the database transfer phase of our hosting move, the board will be disabled temporary.

Sorry in advance for the inconveniences this might cause.

Of course you can still post. Just not during the final phases of the downtime. Hopefully they should not last too long. One nice thing is that if the domain name takes a while to propagate through the world (normally takes between 5 minutes and 72 hours) I got the IP address of the new host so I can point this copy of the board there.

this won't result in something like the maxcoderz move, will it?

Nope. We keep the same URL. During the domain name transfer some people may experience some downtimes that may last a few hours, though, but I'll try to start such transfer at night during week days so it won't affect too much people. What I hope is to see no downtimes like on UTI last year. If I notice DNS takes too long to propagate, I will simply use this 1and1 copy of the board as a temporary board, then once DNS propagated, I'll redo another DB backup and update the new board so we do not lose posts.

Not anymore. It turns out that we'll be better with a high quality shared hosting than a low quality VPS.

I just ran a db test to see if this forum install appears to work properly on the new host. It seems to work fine. I will just need to change some URLs/file paths. The database tested dated back in March 2010, when the site had 25700 posts, so it takes less time to test :P

Glad to hear. ;D
I just hope it won't be down for as long as UTI was.

Yeah it would suck. Normally it shouldn't, but I'll make sure to check everytthing first to make sure I am doing the changes right.

Hey, it's done! Are there any features that won't work, though?

Nope everything should be functional, except maybe OmnomIRC if it didn't finish updating for you. netham45 couldn't use OmnomIRC for a few hours after he started being able to access the site, for some reasons.

For now, there are still people and search bots that cannot access the new site because the DNS propagation isn't finished for their ISP/country yet, so those people may not be able to access Omni for about 2-3 days. Fortunately the domain nameserver changes did not go as bad as with United-TI last November, where their registrars totally messed up X.x.

I'm pretty happy with how smooth this went :)

Yeah me too, at first I was scared by 1and1 because the domain name settings seemed to be limited and I feared I would have to setup the domain name to redirect, which would have forced me to transfer it to a new registrar, but finally the way the new host is setup we had no issues. It was just a matter of switching nameservers then waiting for DNS propagation update. Another challenging part was importing the database. It is 59 MB large and the new host lets me upload 50 MB large files (which is good, though, considering the old host only allowed 20 MB files). I was forced to use Bigdump to import the database. Uploading everything also took 8 hours but that occured the day before the final move, which is why attachments got disabled for a bit.

Yeah, now hopefully everyone can access the site again soon :D

I think it was a good occasion to start moving, too, because mid-october == exams+many project deadlines+band ending and even some ACT/SAT tests, if I remember, meaning everyone is freaking busy. Moving at that time would affect fewer users than if we moved earlier this month or even last month. I also had a poll asking when people would be busier in Oct and it seemed that mid-oct got a higher amount of vote for a while.

We moved to a new hosting provider. Basically the site is located elsewhere now (although the domain name now points to the new server so we keep the same URL). This was due to the following:

-500 Internal Server Errors occuring sporadically on 1and1
-Bunch of scripts stopping working due to 1and1 limiting PHP functions

It's awesome that the site's at its highest activity ever even with all of this going on. ;D

Yeah I was surprised that it got this much activity yesterday. Until 12 PM there were 25 posts I think and about 4000 hits. I was sure it would be a <10000 hits day because most people still couldn't get in. Also some people probably couldn't post because they forgot to clear their cache/cookies due to the move (hence the new notice at the top now) or were busy.
