Title: ZTrumpet Releases Exodus 0.90 Beta
Post by: ztrumpet on June 15, 2010, 05:50:47 pm
I've decided it's time to release a project that I've very proud of.  It's Exodus, an excellent basic platformer.

<img src="http://www.omnimaga.org/images/screenshots/Exodusbetascreenie.gif" />

"Exodus is an extremely fun yet difficult platformer for the TI-83/84 series calculators.  So far there are 14 levels (ordered in the order that I made them) that should provide lots of fun.  Upon first glance, Exodus looks like most other games released for the calculator, with monochrome graphics and loading times, but it includes many features rarely seen in Basic games.  Exodus includes actual enemies that you must avoid and shoot to advance to the next level.  Also there are gems you must collect and a flag you need to be at, at the end of each level.  If that's not enough, there are also switches that control a tile that toggles between solid and clear whenever you shoot the switch.  Finally there are crumbling blocks that disappear after you've stepped on them more than once and spikes that you cannot land on.  Exodus also features unheard of speed for a TI-Basic game, so fast that if you hold one of the arrows it skips the frame immediately after moving for the first time.  Also the entire game is in only one program with no external variables so it is easier to keep track of.  Exodus is one of the best games ever coded in TI-Basic language and a must try.  Click link to download one of the greatest games you'll ever play."

http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=534

I need some feedback from you guys before I release a full version.  Which levels did you think were incredibly easy, and which did you think were incredibly hard?  Also, if you guys can make levels I will include them in the final game.  I'm hoping to have around 25 levels in the final game.  As proof that I'll put them in the game, levels 13 and 14 were designed by Meishe.

Thanks for trying this and please discuss. :D

Looks cool, I can't wait to try it! It looks like there's a level editor, too.
Even better than Insanity...

Insanity was nice too, altough I personally found it to be too hard due to always moving two steps when trying to jump on platforms, so I always felt on the other side in the hole :/

The graphics blend very well including text messages boxes, there are some enemies moving around, it has some crazy objects events, it's epic!

A master piece ztrumpet!

This looks really excellent ztrumpet! I'll have to give it a try and give you some feedback. A few questions though, it the screenshot at 15mhz or 6mhz? Have you tested speed on both? I can test both if you like as I have an 83+ BE and an 83+ SE.
*Edit* I also forgot to ask, what size is this thing currently sitting at?

The screenie is at 15mhz mode.  Currently the file size is 5642 bytes. :)

Yeah I saw the size earlier, pretty small for that game. Nice job ^^

You have to jump around him and go down the side so you can hit the switch underneath him.  Then you can get the gem and kill the enemy. ;D  Good luck! :D

EDIT: Here are three easy levels if you find the others too hard.  :)  Enjoy! ;D

Are you planning to include those in the game?

I think I will I just haven't yet.  The reason they aren't in the real version yet is because I had forgotten about them. :)

Aaah ok. Are they the same as the ones you sent me a while ago, btw?

Don't know what happened.... I downloaded and tried the game on WabbitEmu (not that I don't trust you, it's just that I didn't have access to my calc ;)) a few days ago (and it's ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, and tiny ... mind if I look in your code?), but when I tried downloading it again a minute or so ago, I got a 500 error :-\

Oh, Omni had a little downtime.  That happens every once and a while.  Try again now. :)

Thanks for the compliments!  You can look at the code all you want and learn from it. :)
Part of the drive for me to make this was seeing Absolute Insanity and saying I think it would be fun to make something like this.  So, Exodus is in part due to you. :D

I love the sprites.  Some of the best graphics I've seen in a pure BASIC game.  You even have some AI and can control the character without much drop in the frame rate.  Good job!

This is The BEST basic game I have ever played! At first I thought it was an asm game.

yay i got past them ;D This game is so fun, addicting, and god dammit, FAST!  I especially admire the way you handle the enemies, very ingenious.  Alright time to go and beat all the levels...

I still don't get that... :(

Scrolled through the game, but couldn't tell where the enemies were being taken care of.

EDIT: Oh, I see :O SourceCoder didn't recognize the solid and tokens. I personally remember this bug, since it rendered the first few releases of one of my games into a glitchy mess :(

Does Kerm know about the missing tokens?

Anyway, I get it ... the program goes through only one enemy every pass ... no wonder it's so fast. I've always wondered how Contra can claim that it "will not slow even if 1000 enemies were on a screen" ... ingenious.

Thanks for mentioning this on Cemetech.  All fixed.

It's really a nice game. Nice job on it :)

Also sorry Deep Thought. It seems Omnimaga is hosted on a database server that is getting kinda overloaded in the past two months. It is even worse with TIMGUL, though (which gave me 500 errors every few minutes during the entire day despite the site being almost dead x.x)

I edited the code some to give you (me) some more reaction time.  I credit ztrumpet with the entire thing, and am not trying to steal his code for my own.  Anyways, here ya go :)

Hey, nice version!  Although I think it makes the game too easy it's definitive a neat modification.  Great job, just remember that the final version will not have a pause like this. :)

I'll be working on finishing this up this weekend, minus the final level order.  I hope you guys will help me rank the levels into difficulties when I release the .95 beta. :)

Awesome! I noticed you seemed kinda busy lately since you were gone for a few days. Were you working on this project? I can't wait to try the next version and some levels. I might be able to rank the first levels at least. It might wait until I am done judging the entries, though (Idk how long that will take. It will probably depend of crashes)

lol :P  At first I read it as "the crashes from Exodus". ;D

No, I was swamped with schoolwork.  On Wednesday and Thursday this week I stayed up till 12:30 and midnight respectively just doing homework.
This is a free weekend, so I should be able to get some stuff done, though. ;D

Darn that sucks x.x

I remember some college weeks where I had to stay up late to finish homework. I unfortunately could not finish my projects because I did not own a computer at home. Result: I often had to go at the college during weekends x.x
