Title: Starcraft tournament

Those who regulary visit #omnimaga may have heard I was planning to do a Starcraft Tournament during christmas holidays since october, when everyone has no school, and some seemed interested, so I decided to post about it now in case they would still be interested.

Basically it would be cool if there was some kind of TI community Starcraft tournament, just for the fun of it. There would be no prize, but it would be pretty fun anyway. :)smile.gif Basically here is how it would work:

-It would be a Starcraft Classic tournament, not brood war, since some people can't seems to find brood war or just doesn't have it but have the original game.
-Game mode would be over battle.net US east server.
-Map would be Starcraft Dream, Fastest possible map ever or Micro Jail deluxe, to ensure very fast games (as they were hacked so the mineral spots are stuck next to the main building and 10 mineral spot are stuck together and there is lot of vespene geyser around so you are sure to never run out of ressource and build fast)
-Game mode would be free for all. This mean everyone against each others, no teams.
-If we get 8 people, there would be 3 games. Last 4 remaining players would play a second time against each others, then the two last remaining players against each others. If there is less or more players this may change the amount of rounds of game played.
-Champions would be listed in a topic in the awards section.

The hardest part would be to decide which day we do it. During beginning of week it would have to be during morning, end of week evenings and weekend it could be anytime during daytime, providing it is not too late during evenings.

To know who is the winner, everyone would have to save a replay of the game, and email it to me afterward so i can view everyone's replay and see who won and who died when. Those who don't send a replay would be disqualified.

I hope some people are interested. I thought it would be fun even though it's not calc related if we had a online game tournament withy only TI community members or old TI community members during Christmas or New Year break.

what is a round robin?

An idea would be that we do a massive free for all, which determines who play against who. Probably strongest vs strongest or like in NHL playoffs Strongest vs weakest. That way after the big free for all each person play against someone else, and the winner go to next round

mmmm I am interested.
I don't care for the format as long as it's fun! ^^

xlibman, in a round robin, you play each person once in a one on one. Then, we could determine winner there, or use that to make a bracket system, where the week start against strong and all that. We could to a round robin with more than one, and have a point system set up on how you place. First place-4points, 2nd - 3 points, 3rd - 2 points, 4th - 1 point. Most points wins, or is first seed in bracket kind of thing.

that could be a good idea, but then it would take a long while so some people may not have enough time :(sad.gif

come on people, this can be fun. If anything, it isn't like it costs all that much to do.

I'm in. Has to be on a Saturday or Sunday; however. I would prefer if it didn't take much time, my parents and school are quite demanding.

-=SilverCalcKnight|_=-

Edit: Perhaps, if we do some kind of round-robin bracket set-up thing, we can all get with our opponents and play whenever we want. That way, we wouldn't be chaining ourselves to a date, and we could always set some kind of deadline to make sure no one procrastinates. Also, I say if we don't get more than 8 players, we should introduce enough comps to make it 8 players.

I'm also in.

And it's the same for me as it is for SCK: Saturdays and Sundays (maybe Friday evenings, but weekends are more convienent) are the best days for me, as school is demanding, and my parents don't care for me to play games instead of work.  ;)wink.gif

i prefer during weekend indeed. lately i have been working during week mostly anyway. However we need to do fast before school start again x.x

well, then you have today and tomorrow for me, and then I have to be back in school.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2006, 08:25:00 am
i think we could do that round robin thing, basically it would be easier for everyone to play against each others

assuming for example that rivereye, me, silver and spelli played, it would be like this

spelli v rivereye
spelli v silver
spelli v xlibman
silver v rivereye
silver v xlibman
rivereye v xlibman

so there would be 6 games, each people would get one point per win. if the winner doesnt save a replay, he get no point though, so that reduce his chance of reaching finals. 2 person would reach finals. If in any case there is a tie, those person plays again against each other. if there is 3 person tied to make things faster it would be 1v1v1 free for all for this game.

Title: Starcraft tournament
Post by: rivereye on December 31, 2006, 09:27:00 am
that would work. This way, you are judged fairly according to your abilities.

true. I wonder tho, how are disconnects judged? I mean if for example a person's Internet die in the middle of the game, do they restart all over or do they both get 0 points?

I think that unless there is a clear advantage, the match must begin again (this way, I can't yank my wifi if I am about to lose and begin again).

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2006, 11:08:00 am
true, that would be more fair

Starcraft is really cheap actually, $20 for the game and expansion pack with strategy guides.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 01, 2007, 04:34:00 am
spelli got the first version for $5. Don't download it from a torrent because then u cannot play online.

THere will be no prize, as it is mostly for fun, but you'Ll be in the award section of the site probably.

Also @everyone: PLEASE DISABLE XFIRE DURING TOURNAMENT, IT MAKE THE GAME LAG SO BADLY!

EDIT: yea I'll post the replays. It will be fun cuz then everyone will see how ppl planned their strategy and built

Title: Starcraft tournament
Post by: Spellshaper on January 02, 2007, 04:04:00 am
well err... My main problem is that I like to amass a big multi-purpose army and then smash.

And like in the game vs you (xlibman), I was too slow and you already beat one of my bases down ^^
But then, I now have a bit more experience with sc since I was on a LAN on sylvester, polishing my skills :Dbiggrin.gif

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 02, 2007, 04:16:00 am
you had more than one base on this map? O_Oshocked2.gif hm ok I guess I wasn't close to beating you yet x.x

I guess I should have rushed XDsmiley.gif
Title: Starcraft tournament
Post by: Spellshaper on January 02, 2007, 04:22:00 am
hehe. That's what I do in all strategy games where it is possible:
Build multiple bases.
-> more ressources
-> faster research
-> decentralized and fast army building
-> should one base fall, migrate the growing army to another. saves ressources in the long run, since you don't have to stay and defend at all costs.

The big part of my army was in the lower left corner of the map.
I had another eleven carriers there and was researching arbiter tecs for surprise surprise teleportations :knight:knight3.gif

but still I think I was too slow lolz

Post by: Delnar_Ersike on January 03, 2007, 03:59:00 pm
Spellshaper, you should have made zillions of Photon turrets, shield batteries, and fully upgraded archons to defend your first base while you upgraded you arbiters. Well, maybe some dragoons, too, but archons rule (I usually lead my first wave of ground attacks with just 12 archons). But of course, you have your own strategies, no need to listen to a guy who has never played on sc battlenet  :oops:embarassed.gif ...
Title: Starcraft tournament
Post by: Spellshaper on January 04, 2007, 12:48:00 am
yeah archons rule when they actually get into striking range but they have two drawbacks: long production time and they have a mere 10HP. Granted, they have enough shields, but one EMP and they're trash.
Carriers backed up by arbiters shall r00l. :)smile.gif

hey guys, if you are interested in doing a round with someone, log into the IRC channel, so things can get set up (who is hosting, that kind of stuff).
Title: Starcraft tournament
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 04, 2007, 04:58:00 pm
that may be a good idea. I am not often on MSN/AIM/xfire lately, so i may be more on IRC (which can be accessed using the chat on the site for those who wont visit irc much).

Just one thing though: the tournament MUST at all cost end BEFORE feb 3rd, else I'll not have time afterward

btw, how should we post replays by chance?

once first round is finished, then all of them are posted. Both winner/defeated replay will be posted, in case one of them messed up. Afterward there will be round two and so on.

well, since the feb 3rd deadline is approaching fast, and that rivereye is leaving for 6 weeks, this means the tournament will be postponed until further notice. I'll still do the rounds with spellshaper and if he is even still participating SilverCalcknight/Calcumancer_E, but afterward it will be halted completly, to start again in a few months

for a Warcraft III tournament (if there will be one, I guess), maybe there could be a large DotA game :Ptongue.gif . I don't really mean it, however, since many people actually know how to play Warcraft III instead of just playing DotA all day :oops:embarassed.gif
