Like "I am participating"? I'll do.

Since I am judging (unless I went completely inactive, in which case another person would do it) I won't be participating in this one.

Aha. Are you going to participate in other ones?

If I don't judge them, maybe.

Also I'll move this in the contests sub-forum.

You might beat us all if your game is so creative that nobody else would've ever thought of your idea :)

True, plus it will be fun to see what people will come up with, especially that we have plenty of new members who were not here for the last contest.

plus, I was trying to make a game for the contest last year, which is why I signed up in the first place ^-^  however, I was only around 40% done when time came to turn it in -- I wasn't too good with physics in game back then, so I struggled a lot and failed a lot with that.

I don't think I will join as I only get very simple stuff to work with axe.

btw: I think the poll isn't working, clicking the answers doesn't do anything...

Otherwise, I might give it a shot or think of something else...

So maybe. ;)

I won't be doing contest #1 as I haven't done any 83+ dev in nearly 6 months :P

But of course I will be in contest # 3. I'll prove that asm is still valid even when gcc is available.

Crap.

Well last year we had more participants in general, but then around late August most of them lost their entire progress in ram clears, with no backups D:, plus some people ran out of time since they had huge projects. Hopefully this year projects are planned better, in terms of data protection and time management. :)

Well, the criteria are narrower, so no RPGs, but the massive amounts of physics games worries me.

btw, changed my vote to yes, no that I figured out what I'm going to do.  ;)

OMG. Well I began reading HotDog's ASM tutorials about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Am i really going to step up and be committed to learning and programming Axe Parser on wabbitemu and have a game ready in 2 months?
BooYah! I have an idea for a puzzle game, though it remains to be seen whether i can learn and program in 2 months.
I downloaded Axe 0.52 the other day and am committing to finding tutorials around. Any tutorials around u think are useful?

I will be happy enough if i am one of the few who manage to submit an entry. That'll be satisfaction for me. Then we'll see about #3

I'll probably enter the #1 contest for the puzzle or platformer thing.  Not sure what I'm doing just yet.  I started TAO last contest, changed it to asm, and am still working on it, so the two month deadline is totally fine by me.

Title: Re: Who is going to participate in the 2011 programming contests?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 29, 2011, 01:12:38 pm
If we have Prizm and Nspire, Nspire might be in the middle, because I noticed most Nspire coders don't code for the rest, while most Prizm owners codes for the 83+ and not the Nspire.

However I don't think we will have an ASM/BASIC contest because UTI currently has one. We may not have a 68K contest either because almost nobody programs for 68K anymore. A 68K competition might as well be called "Jim vs Stefan Bauwens competition".

What I hope, though, is that during June people won't get extremly busy until the very end of the month, giving them no time to work on their entry during the last 2 weeks. I noticed that when I catched up on new posts yesterday, almost all contest entries were last updated in May ???

@annoyingorange:Check the<a href=http://ourl.ca/11030> contest rules</a> and see if your program is a legal entry. You could always create a new program to enter in the contest, that's part of the fun after all isn't it?

I'm going to enter if I can finish my game fast enough, it is a mode 7 style racer for Nspire. Do I have to make sure that my program works on touchpad calcs, (?) because I don't have one.

So I haven't been noticing many updates on projects lately, who's still participating? Did anyone give up? I hope not :)

I think it should work on both, but I don't know if the rules say anything about it.

I'm still in. I haven't posted anything about my new entry yet, although it's progressing fairly well ;)

One worry I had is that almost every contest entry topic did not have any update since May, and I hoped that this doesn't mean all of them died... O.O

I've been working on a project for the contest #1 too, but I probably have to give up now, since I'm failing at trying to combine x256 physics with smoothscrolling tilemapping since about three weeks. =/

Sorry to hear. You could always try to ask for help, though, although the contest finishes in 3 weeks. X.x

If you haven't seen my thread, I changed my mind, and am doing a zombie fps game. I did not have to do much over again, as they both use a raycasting engine I'm still working on.

Good to hear. Also fb39 try to not make something too large, though. We need to remember those contests lasts 2 months each.

Axe: less than 3 weeks remains
Nspire: less than 7 weeks
-----: Starts in less than 3 weeks.

Also keep in account vacations with no internet access. If you think you will lose net access, try to submit your entry before leaving.

I won't announce updates in my thread unless I add a new function.  I mean, what's the point of showing you guys the new levels and how to beat them?  ;)

Ugh, Nymless might be a little...sparse. Everything's coded and working except the main menu (All I have is the mockup) and the level loading/storing, both crucial pieces blocked by timing.

I agree, I also never see Continuity Screenshots past the 1st level so I don't learn how to beat the levels.

I was thinking about participating in the Axe Contest at first, but my platformer's code was getting too big for me.

Then I thought about the Lua one, but Lua is not much of a language. I *may* make a very simple Lua game for the contest, but am not sure yet, probably not.

Mine won't have too much content. Once I get the raycasting working, I just need to make a few different levels, add an HUD and weapons, and zombies with a rudimentary AI system that makes them move towards the player.

i was planning on participating, but with the state my project is in now i would never finish it in time. good luck to everyone else!

I didn't get very far in cube droid tho, far enough to see it would be win on-calc ;D

...Raycasting *platformer*?? Does that mean both ray *and* floorcasting? That's gonna be tough, even Runer112s raycaster struggles in 15mhz with textures iirc....idk how much more strain adding a floorcaster onto it would have.

edit: oh lol nspire k gotcha :)

This is on nspire, so I don't need platforms ;)
My raycaster should run at at least the same speed as bwang's, but most likely faster as I am using all fixed point math.

That's cool to hear. I do not think extremly high precision from floating points is needed anyway, considering that's a calculator game running on low resolution.

And yeah the TI-Nspire contest allows any game genre. The reason why the Axe contest is limited to two ranges of games is because it would have been redudant to do an Axe contest where any game is allowed, two years in a row.
Title: Re: Who is going to participate in the 2011 programming contests?
Post by: fb39ca4 on June 27, 2011, 10:01:41 am
With the fixed point system I am using, I will actually get better precision in most cases, especially at high X and Y coordinates on the map, though the range is limited to 65536 blocks now. If I can get floorcasting to be fast enough, I will add it, but that is a secondary goal.

Well personally I would probably at least announce that the project isn't dead, but you just were working on levels. Else, if there are no post, people might think it's dead and worry it won't be finished in time for the deadline.

We were supposed to have some last year too, but then I never could figure out decent ones :(.

This year, though, I guess I could just use modified versions of the contest logos.

In other words, make sure to not make your entry too big, like adding 10 extra levels and not working on anything else, then arriving the final day and realizing you didn't put all features in or it is buggy :P

Hmm, now I need to start prioritizing features...

And levels are going to be so hard to make for this since I have like 4 aspects to consider and somehow make them work together x.x
Included level editor ftw?

I guess I'm going to have to ditch the level editor until after the contest >< ah well, there'll still be some great levels.
Title: Re: Who is going to participate in the 2011 programming contests?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 01, 2011, 02:44:07 pm
I don't think the lv editor is necessary for the contest. The issue is that judging and voting only last two weeks, and I doubt people will have enough time to make levels during then. Try to focus on getting a demo with a bit of good levels, some of which are not too hard. Also I think you should include the early 2011 levels you had too, even if they were simpler. Of course 40 levels would be nice, but during judging I think only like 5 level will be tried at most, although maybe if I judge I will try more since I have work vacations.
