[Idea] Ion Plus
« on: November 11, 2010, 10:02:48 am »
I love Ion. It's a small, fast shell with an intuitive interface (what I look for in a shell, not Intelligent Writeback or passwords). However, I was wondering if anyone was interested in updating Ion to be more amazing than it already is. I've sorted the features I'd like to see by difficulty level...

Easy
2ND also launches programs
Programs without descriptions use their program name in the menu

Medium
Sort key (allows alpha sorting, but doesn't sort every time you load the shell [cough cough Mirage])

Hard
Support for MirageOS programs
Support for DoorsCS6/7 programs

Any takers? Any features I'm missing? Would this be possible or am I just kidding myself?
See you, space cowboy...

sounds rather doable. You'd probably want to use a list or string to store current Program positions, to make the sorting easier. Support for MirageOS and DCS simply means looking at their source code to support their header types.

A feature I would request: support the pics from MOS and DCS progs.

For MOS/DCS programs, wouldn't the shell need to be a flash app? Not sure, though, but I think someone mentioned that somewhere.

EDIT: The EASY stuff sounds pretty easy enough, though. And as for MOS's auto-sort, you can disable it :)

I think it would start getting big if it supported MOS/DCS programs, due to the routines those uses.

Ion is great in the way it takes little archive memory, but its major problem is that it takes about 1.6 KB of RAM after being installed, thus, limiting you in what game size you can run (to run Dying Eyes, you need to delete the entire archive)

DJ pretty much hit the nail on the head. Personally, I'd rather use a shell that is a flash app so I don't have to worry about taking up RAM or just have my programs as standalone APPs. And yea Support for DCS and MOS would be possible, but it would make ION much larger as it would have to include DCS(and MOS?) subroutines so that programs written for DCS that use them would be able to run.(as DJ said)

Although, a 1 page app that supported all that would be very impressive. Isn't DCS about 6 or 7 pages?

Nah, it's 3.  And it's not just Doors, but Doors+xLib+Celtic III+Some of Omnicalc+PicArc+Calc2Net+Mirage Routines+Ion Routines. ;D

This sounds like a neat idea, but I think if Mirage and Doors's routines were added it would be too big. :-\

Yea I agree with ztrumpet.
Thoughts:
Mirage is one page, but I have no idea how much extra space it has(if much). I'd wager that Ion with added features would be at least 2 pages large minimum. :/

What's PicArc?

And yeah, I agree, it'd probably be 2 pages at least. Without all the new additions, Doors was already at 2.

Yea I agree with ztrumpet.

IIRC Mirage was pretty full already... (I think someone mentioned that somwhere, but I'm not sure.)

It's included in Celtic III and Doors now, so no worries. ;D
