hullo everyone.
i thought a little friendly competition may be in order so as to keep our minds sharp and fingers nimble. basically someone(in this case, me) names a fairly simple challenge. this challenge has to be the creation of some game or solving of some problem that can be approached from multiple angles, and at the same time can be finished in a day of so. the "winner" (whomever's program is the favourite of the other people who participate in that round) gets to choose the next challenge(or can defer if he'd rather not, in which case whomever else wants to can propose a challenge).
this is not in any way intended to be an official contest; the purpose is simply to toss around ideas and to show people how many different possible ways there are to solve a problem. because of this, language used(or even platform) don't really matter. feel free to use anything from TI BASIC to python. just keep in mind that, in order to pick a favourite, your competitors have to actually be able to run your program :P
ok, here is a simple one to start us off: create the most difficult, but still theoretically playable, tunnel game in existence.
mine is attached below. (note, this program won't run properly in an emu, as the display method it uses relies on actual hardware. i included a screenshot anyways, though XD)
-
You do realize there will be many quadratic formula competitions :D
-
Wow, that game actually looks fun :D
-
What's you game supposed to look like on the calc?
-
I think it's supposed to be something like ???... not sure though.
http://ourl.ca/6102/95858
-
Looking cool!
I'll take you on, and I'll do it in TI Basic! ;D
-
(http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/ptiani4.gif)
on calc screenie also if wabbit fails try pindurti it worked better in this case
-
That actually looks pretty cool, reminds me of that tunnel clone in the Axe contest last year for some reason :P
ok, here is a simple one to start us off: create the most difficult, but still theoretically playable, tunnel game in existence.
Just put a Shade(0) at the beginning :evillaugh:
-
It looks like a very scary game to play
*ruler wishes very hard for a TI-84+SE but is disappointed. For now...

*ruler wishes very hard for a TI-84+SE but is disappointed. For now...
Don't the nspires have 84+ emus built-in?
-
runs on a 83P thats what that screenshot was emulating ^_^
-
Yes but It won't let me load any programs to it so it kind of sucks.
-

AAH!! My eyes O.O :o
-
Alright, spent about 2 hours on this, I think that's enough. I promise once you've gone for about a minute your adrenaline really gets pumping, this game gets insanely hard. At that point you can't even tell where you are in the tunnel when the screen is shifting, you just have to guess and move up and down based on the contours of the blur on the screen. ;)
CRAZYTUN.8xp is the game. It's bloody insane, I'm still shaking from playing it. This is seriously the most invigorating calculator game I have played. Ever.
CRAZYSRC.8xp is the Axe source file.
-
WOah that's epic guys! O.O
And runer that seems insane but cool to play ;D
-
i like it =D
maybe we should make a sort of polished collection of these when they're all done?
-
Yeah probably. For sure I think they should eventually go in the downloads section if they have a title screen or something.
-
That's insane, Runer. I want this on my calc STAT! ;D
-
STAT? ???
-
I believe he means immediately
-
Wow, these are looking really fun!
-
@Runer: That's really AWESOME.
-
STAT? ???
I believe he means immediately
Yup. ;)
Stat, from statim is a medical term meaning "immediately" (from Latin) or Sooner Than Already There.
In other words, I wanted it on my calc right away. ;D
Mine's done; I'm just waiting to get home to upload it. It looks pretty epic if I do say so myself. :D
-
Runer that is the craziest looking tunnel game I have ever seen.
-
Alright, here's my attempt, in TI Basic. :D
Blinded:
Use [2nd], [Enter], [Left], and [Right]. I think the controls speak for themselves. ;)
The goal is to stay alive for as long as possible.
My high score is 726. Can you beat it?! ;D
I hope you enjoy my game!
By the way, there's a pretty sweet effect if you turn the contrast up pretty high (but no to the max) on the actual calc...
-
For a second there I couldn't tell what was happening :P But now I see, that's pretty cool. I might have to try that.
-
That's pretty fast for BASIC :D
-
fast, and it's a wonderful concept as well.
un applauso, z!
-
Hmm, is there going to be a follow-up concept for this? This is a neat thread/idea. ;D
-
I take this challenge! When's the deadline?
-
I take this challenge! When's the deadline?
Whenever. ;)
It's a pretty cool challenge. ;D
-
/me is thinking about Physics and Simul...
-
The next topic should be about the craziest RPG battle engine! ;D
(And that's about the only thing that Yeong can actually program...D: )
-
/\that's a little extensive for a mini project. i think it's been long enough to propose a new one, though. who else has ideas?
oh, and yunhua, don't think that means you have to quit yours. i'm still curious to see what you, or anyone else who wants to try out the first one, can come up with!
-
I'd do this, as I kinda like making tunnel games, but my projects, like Nostalgia, deserve some attention.
Apparently though, my tunnel games always turn out a lot harder than I expect them to be. :P *cough*Collision Course*cough*
-
i think it's been long enough to propose a new one, though. who else has ideas?
Sprite editors!!!
jk
Maybe breakout clones, or tunnel games made for fun factor rather than difficulty?
-
Wait, one more [BASIC] tunnel game :P
I've spent the whole last hour on this (mostly writing the map).
Fishytunnel!
BTW: That's the farthest I've gotten on it...
EDIT: Well it was made for fun, so it technically fits
-
i totally beat you! :P
is that section where the field branches into multiple dead-end paths actually possible?
oh, and i like the idea of having pre-written levels. how long is it?
-
The first branch is indeed possible. The second one, not so much.
It's actually fairly short, but that had more to do with the fact that I knew no one would get far enough to beat it either way :P

-
Got mine done. ;)
I'll upload later today or tomorrow.
I slowed it down so its possible, but it may just be because I'm bad at tunnel games. :P
and I made a PapiRiver Clone ;D
-
sweet! i can't wait to see it!
in the meantime, here's another i made earlier, as that first one was just a cheap interrupt trick and didn't require much thought.
The Doctor's Done It Again!
this time, in an attempt to visit a parallel dimension, he only succeeded in transporting HALF of the TARDIS, swapping it out for it's parallel counterpart.
because he now only has half of his craft, he must pilot it by hand until the next convenient stop. to make matters worse, the two halves of the TARDIS have recognised that something isn't quite right, and are doing their best to reconnect with one another, which would (as every good Sci-Fi fan knows) wreak havoc on the whole of the space-time continuum. can he manage to, yet again, save the universe from himself?!
EDIT: controls are left, right, and second
it's easier on hardware than it is in wabbit. i promise! :P
-
That looks pretty cool! Neat concept. :D
What button do you press to separate the craft?
-
okay, here's me playing my helicopter game on 15 mHz, and me epically pwning PapiRiver. (watch the entire Papi River screenie!. ;D)
you get closer to the center as you progress in the helicopter game. And I'm not going to post the PapiRvier game here yet for a variety of reasons you will find out soon. ;)
BEATTHIS is the helicopter one. ;)
EDIT: I'm using Chrome, so could someone who can see the screenies at full speed tell me if the helicopter one is fast? They're both supposed to be faster
EDIT2: the text I typed on the second screenie was not intentional. :P
EDIT3: Runer probably won though. :o
-
yes, it runs quickly. nicely done!
oh, and...
-
Oops, I meant to fix that, ohwell I'll leave it as an Easter egg
-
They both look great yunhua! I think I like the Helicopter one a little better though, plus I can actually play it. :D
Why can't you post the Papi River game? (I just read your post back over)
-
My idea is much harder: Invisible Tunnel! >:D
-
I can't beat any of these games. My reflexes are way too slow. :P
-
My idea is much harder: Invisible Tunnel! >:D
Perhaps someone can create a tunnel game where the tunnel turns visible and invisible in cycles (like 1 second visible and 3 seconds invisible, then 1 second visible, and so on)? I don't know if that is mrmprog's idea or not.
-
I was thinking of a tunnel that you can't see the whole time. You could just see your ship/icon/player. That would be very hard.
-
Wouldn't that be kind of luck though? The best strategy would be to stay in the middle the whole time, I suppose :P
-
I like the idea of having memory game where you get to see a maze for few seconds and then you stop seeing it and you have to finish it. The maze could be visible periodically for a few seconds then go back off. To make it challenging, make different levels of difficulty where the maze is visible for shorter lengths of time and then add in a time limit... I did that with a memory game, once.
-
Hey! That is a good idea! :)
-
These look really sweet. I don't however really understand how to play Qwerty's or Shmib's most recent one, but oh well. They still look fun.
Another good idea would be to switch which one is invisible, like for a bit both are visible, then they start switching between the ship being visible and the track being visible, then the pauses get longer, and longer to make it harder.
-
/\how's about we make "ingenious memory games" the next challenge?
-
They both look great yunhua! I think I like the Helicopter one a little better though, plus I can actually play it. :D
Why can't you post the Papi River game? (I just read your post back over)
er... I hacked my own game for the fun of it and then I lost the source. :P I was going to recode it then post it, but I was too lazy lol. :p its really the same thing as tunnel games except you bounce up, not die when you hit a wall, and my screenie is really a screenie of the hacked version. :P
-
Wow I am impressed at how fast some tunnel games manages to be even though they don't use Disp to scroll. Also nice works for the others as well.
-
Yeah, it helps that the tunnel width is constant. Otherwise, the code gets ugly and the game bogs down. :-\
-
Yeah true. The only issue is that the difficulty won't increase much, but it's already hard at first if the width is small, anyway.
-
*Bump* Any new ideas?
I like coding minigames. ;)
-
I made a small program. Idk if it can be classified as a tunnel game exactly but it is similar.
It goes off of mrmprog's idea of an invisible tunnel.
Also, a battle program for a theoretical RPG sounds cool.
(I just realized, this is the first game I uploaded to Omnimaga! :w00t: )
-
For some reasons this tunnel brought me back memories from one of the RPG I worked on that had a dungeon where you couldn't see walls and the floor. I think it was Illusiat 10, Mystique or Illusiat 12.
-
Oooh, that's cool! Do you mind if I make a game based on that for my Homescreen Game Pack, Homer? ;D
-
Oooh, that's cool! Do you mind if I make a game based on that for my Homescreen Game Pack, Homer? ;D
Sure, keep in the fact that the controls are actually inverted and you only have up/down controls. :P
-
I came up with a new topic if anyone wants to try.
This is a complete giveaway to Builderboy, but make a Arcade game with Physics. ;)
I have one that I'll upload soon.
-
That would be nice, although yeah he stands a big chance O.O
-
Well here it is, although its still not finished, since you can't score points. (I'm lazy. :P) I'll fix that and get it up soon. ;)
messed up message at end, ignore. ;)
BASKETBL is executable, AXBASKET is source.
move ball around with arrows, 2nd to shoot, hold down to shoot unnaturally high, press clear after your shot. I'll make it nicer later. ;)
-
More than a bit of a necro but why don't we start this up again? It was actually a pretty good idea but it died. :S
So how about we start off with a RPG battle engine? :D
-
AXE or TI-BASIC?
-
The original intent was any language you see fit. Just so long others can run it as well.
-
Okay, I know I should be working on Grey but I just felt like doing this. :P
It's based on the original tunnel game but here there are 2 tunnels in stead of one! 8) You control the dots: The one on the left with left/right keys but the one on the right you control with the up/down keys ;D(up=right down=left).
Your goal is to get as far as possible. My current high score is 459 but I'm sure you can beat that.
Also both tunnel widths get smaller and smaller >:D
Anyway HAVE FUN and don't lose The Game. :P
(Compile Tunell with Axe and run Tunnel)
-
awesome!
/me lost
-
Looks nice, but going left/right with the up/down keys must be friggin hard O.O
-
Looks nice, but going left/right with the up/down keys must be friggin hard O.O
seconded
-
Now add rickroll to it and make the world's hardest tunnel game ever.
-
MOAR TUNNEL GAME!
(http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/tunnel game.gif)
-
I have an idea: make a tunnel where you start off going to the right, but then the tunnel changes directions and youre going diagonally and then even up/down. Ill see if i can do it.
-
Looks nice, but going left/right with the up/down keys must be friggin hard O.O
Yes, but that's normal. It may be hard according to the first post in this topic. xD
-

This would be nice actually, although in that case it might just be best to create some sort of tilemap where the race track is generated.
