Title: a little friendly competition[not actually a contest]
Post by: shmibs on February 22, 2011, 07:33:32 pm
hullo everyone.
i thought a little friendly competition may be in order so as to keep our minds sharp and fingers nimble. basically someone(in this case, me) names a fairly simple challenge. this challenge has to be the creation of some game or solving of some problem that can be approached from multiple angles, and at the same time can be finished in a day of so. the "winner" (whomever's program is the favourite of the other people who participate in that round) gets to choose the next challenge(or can defer if he'd rather not, in which case whomever else wants to can propose a challenge).

this is not in any way intended to be an official contest; the purpose is simply to toss around ideas and to show people how many different possible ways there are to solve a problem. because of this, language used(or even platform) don't really matter. feel free to use anything from TI BASIC to python. just keep in mind that, in order to pick a favourite, your competitors have to actually be able to run your program :P

ok, here is a simple one to start us off: create the most difficult, but still theoretically playable, tunnel game in existence.
mine is attached below. (note, this program won't run properly in an emu, as the display method it uses relies on actual hardware. i included a screenshot anyways, though XD)

That actually looks pretty cool, reminds me of that tunnel clone in the Axe contest last year for some reason :P

Alright, spent about 2 hours on this, I think that's enough. I promise once you've gone for about a minute your adrenaline really gets pumping, this game gets insanely hard. At that point you can't even tell where you are in the tunnel when the screen is shifting, you just have to guess and move up and down based on the contours of the blur on the screen. ;)

CRAZYTUN.8xp is the game. It's bloody insane, I'm still shaking from playing it. This is seriously the most invigorating calculator game I have played. Ever.

CRAZYSRC.8xp is the Axe source file.

Stat, from statim is a medical term meaning "immediately" (from Latin) or Sooner Than Already There.
In other words, I wanted it on my calc right away. ;D

Runer that is the craziest looking tunnel game I have ever seen.

Post by: ztrumpet on February 23, 2011, 04:07:22 pm
Alright, here's my attempt, in TI Basic. :D

Blinded:
Use [2nd], [Enter], [Left], and [Right].  I think the controls speak for themselves. ;)
The goal is to stay alive for as long as possible.
My high score is 726.  Can you beat it?! ;D
I hope you enjoy my game!

By the way, there's a pretty sweet effect if you turn the contrast up pretty high (but no to the max) on the actual calc...

I'd do this, as I kinda like making tunnel games, but my projects, like Nostalgia, deserve some attention.

Apparently though, my tunnel games always turn out a lot harder than I expect them to be. :P *cough*Collision Course*cough*

Maybe breakout clones, or tunnel games made for fun factor rather than difficulty?

Wait, one more [BASIC] tunnel game  :P

I've spent the whole last hour on this (mostly writing the map).

Fishytunnel!

BTW: That's the farthest I've gotten on it...

EDIT: Well it was made for fun, so it technically fits

is that section where the field branches into multiple dead-end paths actually possible?

oh, and i like the idea of having pre-written levels. how long is it?
Title: Re: a little friendly competition[not actually a contest]

The first branch is indeed possible. The second one, not so much.

It's actually fairly short, but that had more to do with the fact that I knew no one would get far enough to beat it either way :P

Post by: shmibs on February 25, 2011, 10:41:44 pm
sweet! i can't wait to see it!
in the meantime, here's another i made earlier, as that first one was just a cheap interrupt trick and didn't require much thought.

The Doctor's Done It Again!
this time, in an attempt to visit a parallel dimension, he only succeeded in transporting HALF of the TARDIS, swapping it out for it's parallel counterpart.

because he now only has half of his craft, he must pilot it by hand until the next convenient stop. to make matters worse, the two halves of the TARDIS have recognised that something isn't quite right, and are doing their best to reconnect with one another, which would (as every good Sci-Fi fan knows) wreak havoc on the whole of the space-time continuum. can he manage to, yet again, save the universe from himself?!

EDIT: controls are left, right, and second
it's easier on hardware than it is in wabbit. i promise! :P

okay, here's me playing my helicopter game on 15 mHz, and me epically pwning PapiRiver.  (watch the entire Papi River screenie!.  ;D)

you get closer to the center as you progress in the helicopter game.  And I'm not going to post the PapiRvier game here yet for a variety of reasons you will find out soon.  ;)

BEATTHIS is the helicopter one.  ;)

EDIT:  I'm using Chrome, so could someone who can see the screenies at full speed tell me if the helicopter one is fast?  They're both supposed to be faster

EDIT2:  the text I typed on the second screenie was not intentional.  :P

My idea is much harder: Invisible Tunnel!  >:D

Perhaps someone can create a tunnel game where the tunnel turns visible and invisible in cycles (like 1 second visible and 3 seconds invisible, then 1 second visible, and so on)? I don't know if that is mrmprog's idea or not.
Title: Re: a little friendly competition[not actually a contest]
Post by: mrmprog on February 27, 2011, 01:34:19 pm
I was thinking of a tunnel that you can't see the whole time. You could just see your ship/icon/player. That would be very hard.
Title: Re: a little friendly competition[not actually a contest]

Wouldn't that be kind of luck though? The best strategy would be to stay in the middle the whole time, I suppose  :P

I like the idea of having  memory game where you get to see a maze for few seconds and then you stop seeing it and you have to finish it. The maze could be visible periodically for a few seconds then go back off. To make it challenging, make different levels of difficulty where the maze is visible for shorter lengths of time and then add in a time limit... I did that with a memory game, once.

These look really sweet. I don't however really understand how to play Qwerty's or Shmib's most recent one, but oh well. They still look fun.

Another good idea would be to switch which one is invisible, like for a bit both are visible, then they start switching between the ship being visible and the track being visible, then the pauses get longer, and longer to make it harder.

er...  I hacked my own game for the fun of it and then I lost the source.  :P  I was going to recode it then post it, but I was too lazy lol.  :p  its really the same thing as tunnel games except you bounce up, not die when you hit a wall, and my screenie is really a screenie of the hacked version.  :P

Title: Re: a little friendly competition[not actually a contest]
Post by: ztrumpet on March 02, 2011, 07:48:11 pm
Yeah, it helps that the tunnel width is constant.  Otherwise, the code gets ugly and the game bogs down. :-\
Title: Re: a little friendly competition[not actually a contest]
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 03, 2011, 03:29:27 pm
Yeah true. The only issue is that the difficulty won't increase much, but it's already hard at first if the width is small, anyway.

I made a small program. Idk if it can be classified as a tunnel game exactly but it is similar.

It goes off of mrmprog's idea of an invisible tunnel.

Also, a battle program for a theoretical RPG sounds cool.

(I just realized, this is the first game I uploaded to Omnimaga!  :w00t: )

For some reasons this tunnel brought me back memories from one of the RPG I worked on that had a dungeon where you couldn't see walls and the floor. I think it was Illusiat 10, Mystique or Illusiat 12.

messed up message at end, ignore.  ;)

BASKETBL is executable, AXBASKET is source.

The original intent was any language you see fit. Just so long others can run it as well.

Okay, I know I should be working on Grey but I just felt like doing this.  :P
It's based on the original tunnel game but here there are 2 tunnels in stead of one! 8) You control the dots: The one on the left with left/right keys but the one on the right you control with the up/down keys ;D(up=right down=left).
Your goal is to get as far as possible. My current high score is 459 but I'm sure you can beat that.
Also both tunnel widths get smaller and smaller >:D
Anyway HAVE FUN and don't lose The Game.  :P
(Compile Tunell with Axe and run Tunnel)

Now add rickroll to it and make the world's hardest tunnel game ever.

I have an idea: make a tunnel where you start off going to the right, but then the tunnel changes directions and youre going diagonally and then even up/down. Ill see if i can do it.

Yes, but that's normal. It may be hard according to the first post in this topic. xD

This would be nice actually, although in that case it might just be best to create some sort of tilemap where the race track is generated.
