Title: Black Sun Rising

Black Sun Rising is an RPG with (hopefully) good graphics.The player can choose either:The Alliance or The Empire (names from the book Eragon, which is a great book), whom happen to be fighting a two-hundred year war and need the assistance of a trained killer.

Player classes:

EMPIRE
-Shade
-Slayer
-Knight
-Ranger

ALLIANCE
-Mage
-Rogue
-Warrior
-Archer

Each class has it's own strengths and weaknesses, thus effecting their stats.

As you grow levels, you can upgrade your stats and choose new spells or special attacks, depending on your class. Right now it's like 2% done, so don't expect anything soon.

I also need a title screen. (Heard Super Speler was pretty good)

Any suggestions would be great, or help making sprites.

that sound interesting, I should check eragon, maybe I'll go see the movie though, as i rarely read anymore, I am a fan of fantasy/adventure stories, thus adventure/rpg games like this.

I am curious about what you'll come up with in this project. I am glad to see new TI RPG programmers coming :)smile.gif, welcome to the forums btw

xlibman, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, see Eregon, it was the worst movie I have ever seen.  If your going to the movies see 'Children of Men' (awsome Sci-Fi movie with tons of hidden Animals/Pink Floyd references).Also, trevmeister66, normally I would make you a title screen but I'm swamped with work lately (if your willing to wait a month or so this would change :)smile.gif).

Would it look better if it were 16x16 sprites or 8x8.
I know it would be easier to make a bigger world with 8x8 sprites, but i'm terrible at drawing 8x8 sprites and it seems 16x16 sprites can just bring out more of a character.

EDIT: @Super Speler you wrote that when i wrote mine, but yeah i can wait a while, i don't plan on finishing this until end of school.

well i would go with 16x16 but i would be no help for them then :(sad.gif. I have lot of 8x8 tiles to give away somewhere, I'll try to find them as soon as i can.

As for title screen spelli could be able to help as well ^^

If you wanna do 16x16 then the game will be a "on world" fluid movement. i.e. the character will move realtime on the map or w/e you have. At least that's what comes to mind for me...

If you wanna do 8x8 then I guess you will have a main map with lots of stuff like shops, enemies, all at once and you can have tile movement or realtime as needed.

It seems that 16x16 will harder of the two, but I'm not sure: it's up to you.

Yeah, I first planned to do all 8x8, but now i'm thinking i can do 8x8 for the normal map with the user character being a normal looking figure for each class, then switch to 16x16 if the player goes into a certain area, to bring out the finer details of that certain player's character.

This is probably a dumb idea since it would take more memory for matrix's and if i could just get decent 8x8 sprites, it would be fine.

mhm that would be an interesting idea. I think zelda minish cap for GBA does that, I'm not sure tho. It would take lot of memory though and 16 pixel walking seems a bit too choppy to me since the screen would be only 6x4 tiles

well at least xLIB can copy archived programs to temporary ram programs so it's useful if you run out of RAM

Also more about the game.

The battle system will be a one v. one turn based thingy.
special attacks and magic spells (which you get from growing lvls) require energy. If you don't have enough energy, you'll have to use melee, which is based off of your attack, strength and agility.

Also, this probably won't work, but i wanted to make it so you could only get special armour and weapons from quests, but then i'd need to add ALL the quests for each character, and that seems unlikely to work, even though I think it would be a great idea to have quests.

sounds like a great idea, although I have to say when I saw Black Sun Rising followed by Empire or Alliance I was hoping for a Star Wars themed game....and in Eragon the "Alliance" should properly be the Varden

16x16 would be great and I think better than 8x8 although with walking I would choose for 4 pixel or 8 pixel walking over 16 because it is smoother and since 16 is divisible it is still easy to make the hit detection routine move at reasonable speeds this sounds like a great game !!

seeing how nobody replied to my sprite request in the other forum section, i'll ask here.

Is anybody willing to make 8x8 sprites for me?
I'm a terrible sprite artist and need as much help as i can.
The following sprites would need to be included:

-castle walls, castle (if possible)
-trees, rocks, other nature stuff
-characters (knight, archer(doesnt need bow), mage, rogue)
-inverted sprites of previous characters
-houses, buildings, etc.
-anything else needed in an RPG

 oh believe me, Eragon is fine, its just that Id love to see a star wars RPG for the calcs, and Black Sun is the name of one of a huge crime syndicate centered on Coruscant in the Star Wars universe.

I do not think so. It sounds like a good game name. The name might also help you in the storyline of the game, incorporating each meaning for the name into the game (like a neo-nazist, black market cult that worships a dark god).

UPDATE:
Because of memory problems in the matrixes, all characters are part of the alliance, and you will fight against the Empire.

Expect a demo this Sunday around 17:00 Omnimaga time. You won't be able to do much, but you'll be able to walk around and see the sites and whatnot.

or if you don't want to use libraries, you can settle for a slower method of splitting the matrix into separate matrixes anf then archive/unarchive the appropriate matrixes. That was the way I solved some of my matrix problems before I encountered xLib.

yeah i was going to just split the matrixes. It's a lot easier for me to understand and do.
BTW, incase you were wondering, matrixes can NOT be 33x42

er i can create 33x42 matrix fine on my TI-83+SE. Even 42x33 works. What error are you getting?

lol well, when i ran the program that has all the numbers in it for the matrix, (it's the only one that is unarchived) it just says ERROR:MEM
and when i select GOTO, it goes to the very end.

Did you matrix only have 0's? (or does it not matter what number is in each spot?) EDIT: because mine had lot's of diff numbers.

no, because your calc had lots of other stuff in RAM at the same time, clear yourself out, delete any ram files, then go make a 99*99. THAT is the theoretical max size.

CONTEST:

I need a bunch of NPC's and was going to make it a competition to see what you all come up with. Everybody is eligible and you can enter as many different ones as you want. The winners will get their NPC put into the game (the winner would be the like the king for example) with your name as the name of the NPC. I'll need the front at least, and side views if you want to add them. All must be 8x8!!!

The following are possible characters:
King
Queen
Knights
Normal people
An Evil King & Queen
or anything else you come up with

eaither post them here or pm (i prefer post here) with the class it falls under.

Besides, my own project is halted due to my graduation stress right now, but I can't prevent myself from doing something calc-related.
Also, I have begun to take a liking in doing mini-sprites.

UPDATE:

The main city map is about 70% complete. None of the insides of houses/castle are complete. Still contemplating wether i should do 16x16 or 8x8 sprites for the inside... :???:confus.gif

I have thought of the first 5 quests and should have them in the demo for tommorow (or is it tomorrow with 2 r's?)

EDIT: Map is 80% complete, and i think i've decided to do 8x8 sprites for the whole game, unless someone can convince me other wise  ;)wink.gif

EDIT 2: Map is now 100% complete (this is only the main city map, so right now you can't go into any of the houses  :(sad.gif )

EDIT 3: The 6th quest has been thought of, work has begun on the matrix for all the rooms (inside houses/castle)

lol yeah i meant it, if i plan to do 16x16 for the insides of houses and such, that part of the game won't be in the demo (i'd have to draw all the sprites and tiles)

If i do 8x8, about a 90% chance, then it should be in tomorow's demo.

WARNING:

This is my first Basic + xLIB game, so remember, you were warned.

Don't get your hopes up about doing much, you can only walk around and see stuff, no interaction or fighting. I just need tips and advide about what i should add or delete.

Demo yes I'm hyped on this I actually went to rehab because of my constant jittering and addiction to this forum lol :)smile.gif Nah but seriously what I would like to see is an original menu-fighting based scheme and very detailed landscapes with NPCs that react differently every time you talk to them so they aren't static. That's just my suggestions.

Yea that's actually what I meant by different every time I just meant dependent on variables cause that would be technically impossible to make an NPC say something different everytime actually in english with a sentence that makes sense and relative to the stories

Sorry for the inconveniance, but BSR won't be released until 10:00 Central time (which is like 23:00 Omnimaga time). I just found out i'll be working for a couple hours today and i have to go shopping for my bro's b-day. And i haven't finished doing the insides of houses yet, unless you'll wouldn't mind no being able to go into the houses, then i can release a beta Demo, then release the real demo later. Hmm... I think i'll do that.

Well, here it is: The first demo release for BSR

The whole point of this release is to get tips and feedback from all of you who download it.

There is only 1 problem that i am aware of, and it is when you walk into a room (all rooms look the same, i need 8x8 sprites of furniture and whatever else would be in a room). If anybody can fix the problem, they will get full credit.

:(sad.gif I've tried over 6 times, and it always say the same thing. No luck sending the game to my calc, and it doesn't send in emus either. Note: I have a TI-83+Silver Edition.

Do you use the timer/clock functions of the TI-84+ in this game? because the TI-83+SE doesn't support those, meaning that if you use them the game will be 84+ only and doesn't run on TI-83+/SE :(sad.gif

no it doesn't use any timer clock thing (mostly cause i don't know how). Hmm... :???:confus.gif

EDIT: hmm it does the same thing to me. Try sending them one at a time to see which one it is.

EDIT 2: After much research, i have concluded that the problem is coming from the program "_theta_BLKSUN" (which the title screen made by Spellshaper  :(sad.gif ) I am now working out a way for it to work.

EDIT 3: There, it should be working now (you have to redownload it ).
The name of "_theta_BLAKSUN" should now just be "BLAKSUN"

still doesnt work, redownloaded the file on previous page and it still show the same error :(sad.gif

EDIT: tried without the program and edited out the line calling it, thats quite a huge map you have there O_Oshocked2.gif are you sure you don't want to split it into smaller maps, like 4 maps for the entire town? also you may want to recall them from a program and store them into matrices so you aren't limited to 10 matrices :)smile.gif

Ok, go to program edit, and look in the prog "theta_IN_theta" and check to see if it says unarchive [J]

Sorry to say (like anybody cares  :Ptongue.gif ) but this project will be put on hold for a while. I have school stuff to do and am beginning to learn java (if anybody can help with that, please be my guest). I'll still perioadicly work on this (optimizing code, fixing the dam going into rooms problem, and the title screen thing.) Don't worry, i'm not leaving omnimaga though.  :Ptongue.gif

ok, i know it's been over 3 months since this project has seen the day of light, but i have finally brought it to the surface. I've mostly been going over the code, try to remember what i was doing. I'm looking for my work i wrote down on paper (I did ALOT of that for this exact moment). I should get back into programming and optimizing soon.
