Title: Omnimaga - The RPG
Post by: bfr on August 23, 2006, 06:30:00 am
Considering that I have finished my TI Freak Ware contest entry, I'm going to be making a tile-mapped RPG (which I have never made before): Omnimaga - The RPG. I'm going to make it in C for 68k calculators and I'm going to use ExtGraph and the tile-mapping routines with it. Also, some of the characters in Omnimaga - The RPG will be actual members of this forum  8).  If you don't want to be in the RPG for some reason, please tell me.  I won't make you look bad or anything  ;)wink.gif .  xlibman will probably be some kind of king, and maybe just the managers or all of the staff will be xlibman's guards or assistants or something.  I'll have to figure out what other members would be.

Also, some of you have already made RPGs, and if you have any four-level grayscale tiles you'd be willing to let me use, that'd be great.  I'm also not very good at making title screens, so I'd appriciate if somebody could make a four-level grayscale title screen saying "Omnimaga" and under it or somewhere, saying "The RPG".

I've never made an RPG before, particularly a tile-mapped one, so I'd also appreciate any tips you expert RPG makers out there have.   :)smile.gif

List of members that want to be in the RPG:
bfr
Cure777
Delnar_Ersike
Dragon_lance - one of three main characters / xlibman's royal guards
elfprince13 - is an elf
graywolf - a mage (or gray wolf)
Jeremy Avalon
JincS
Killerplayer
leofox
Liazon
necro - long hair, sells expensive stuff, has a sword
Netham45
PoisonedV
pyro_xp2k
Radial Pi - radical politition, has his own army, fights with Super Speler
rivereye - one of three main characters / xlibman's royal guards, wants fishing gear
Spellshaper
Super Speler -leader of an army
Tenniskid - one of three main characters / xlibman's royal guards
xlibman - king

An Omnimaga-RPG... funny idea! but making it for 68k-calcs wouldn't have been my choice cause most omnimaga users just have z8-calcs...

I would, but I have more experience with C for 68k calculators then Z80 assembly for the TI-83+ (and I don't know much about TI-83+ TI-BASIC or xLIB).  Good point though; I'll try to later on :)smile.gif

Also, so you aren't going to be in the RPG, correct (just checking)?

Whats the difference between 780 and 68k
Title: Omnimaga - The RPG
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 23, 2006, 09:44:00 am
z80 and 68k are processor type: Zilog80 and Motorolla 68000

TI-80 use TI proprietary processor, TI-81 to TI-86 and TI-73 uses the z80 and TI-89, 92 and v200 use 68k
Title: Omnimaga - The RPG
Post by: bfr on August 23, 2006, 09:53:00 am
The "z80" or Zilog 80, is a processor, and "68k", or Motorola 68000, is also a procesor.  The Morotola 68000 processor is generally more advanced, has a different syntax in its version of assembly, and has some other things different.

And yeah, like xlibman said, the TI-80 uses the TI proprietary processor, the TI-81 to the TI-86 and TI-73 use the z80 processor, and the TI-89, TI-92 and Voyage 200 use the 68k processor.

Don't do anything with the black area for now - I'll think of what to add there later.  Sorry if I'm causing you too much trouble, but could you make "THE RPG" smaller but wide?  Kind of like:

omnimaga
THE RPG

except it's centered.

So I'm in it right?

only in the sense that one's 32 bit and the other is 8/psuedo 16 bit.  you can say that 68k is more like a computer in terms of ASM, but for that reason, it's not allowed on a lot of standardized tests.

the truth is, z80s generally run at a faster clock speed than ti's 68ks, but the 32-bit-ness will make up for it and more.

Still, don't under estimate the z80!!!  The calc designs for z80 generally have impressive capabilities, but the downside is you have to master (as in MASTER) the languages.

btw, z80s were in the original GB

68ks were in the Sega Master system iirc?

sorry for the OT ^^

bfr: i think this is a great idea, and it will definitely help promote the forums too.  Perhaps someone should make a z80 version too.

a z80 version would rock to have. Also, it was a modiffied z80 in the Gameboy (not as powerful as the ones in the calc). Also I thought the 81 had the propatary (z8-80), but I may be wrong.

I would like to get in on this too.

Using http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/90/9070.html, I now have teh ability to make lvl-8 greyscale pics for TI-89/92. Except that I still need a proper compiler to make .9xz-files. <_<dry.gif
Besides, doesn't the LCD of the TI-92 have 240x128 pixels instead of 160x100?
*Spellshaper doesn't like compilers, mainly because he wasn't even able to get TASM up and running. >_<

I would imagine 8-level grayscale on a 68k calculator would be flickery and drain the batteries a lot.  If I also made the maps with 8-level grayscale, they would probably take up an aweful lot of space.

8-level hmm... well, i heard that Kevin Kofler (sorry kev for mentioning his name!) might be secretly working on an 8 level gs mode for TIGCC's greyscale.

AFAIK:
pros: cool graphics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cons: drain batteries, more data, and consequently shorter RPG, as well as flicker if the motion is too intense.  Also, it might look repulsive on HW2-4 because of the flicker.  I wish TI didn't change the screen hardware!!

Would anybody be interested in making 16x16 4-level grayscale sprites of Tenniskid, Dragon_lance, and rivereye?  It would be great if I could get some for when each of them was facing forwards, backwards, left, right, and when each of them is walking in each direction.  I could mention your name in the credits, if you'd like.  Also, if anybody has any awesome 16x16 four-level grayscale tiles they think would be good for this RPG, please show me them.

I know I haven't been making much progress on this lately, and I'm sorry :(sad.gif.  Part of this is that #tigcc was done for a while, and then when it started working again, I was banned from there.  Part of this is that I have been working on other projects.  But I will try to finish this, and I really don't want this project to die.

Thanks for the sprites, xlibman :)smile.gif.  What size are those, though?  Also, there has got to be a program that converts that tilemap sheet to a bunch of separate tiles, and possibly even generates the C code for them too, which would be great.  Would anybody know of this program, if it exists?

Not that xlibman's spritesheet was bad, but sprites are still welcome :)smile.gif.

That's going to be the main feature in my Bitmap -> .8xi Converter (the tile-splitter and the C/ASM code output) .

**Offtopic**
The first version or two are going to be TI8x only, but I'm hoping to be able to expand to cover all calcs someday...

Sorry for that little bit...

sprites are 32x32 i think, as it was rpg maker, not sure tho I would need to check. Also I gotta make 16x16 versions  of them if it work well. i dunno for program to separate them. I usually select the desired image area, and paste it in a 16x16/32x32 image

So not 68k? that's too bad.  I was going to say that one thing I don't like about istudio is that it only outputs C array format for sprites as char, and nothing else.  I have to put it through an online hex manipulator to make it formated correctly.

Super_Speler:  I might figure out some way for you to have your own army.  Maybe you could be another one of xlibman's enemies.

Anyway, here is how it's going to be set up:

xlibman:  The king

Dragon_lance, rivereye, Tenniskid:  At the beginning of the game, the user chooses to be one of these characters.  Each one has different powers and abilities.

Everybody else:  I'll have to figure out some way to implement you all in the game.  If you want to be something specifically (as Super Speler said he wants to have an army), just tell me.  Anybody else who joins after the next week or so will probably either end up being a minor character or will not be in it at all, because I need to start finalizing how the game will be.

(rivereye is the first one, Tenniskid is the second, and dragon_lance is obviously the last one)

Could you make 16x16 4-level grayscale sprites for rivereye being still, walking up, walking down, walking left, and walking right?

I'll try. But I'll resize the sprite if you want it in 16x16 pixel.

edit : Is this good ?

OK. These are some sprites I made a long time ago for my school's programming club. They are not that good and they were not intended for calculators so they are of random size. Maybe there are a few you can use, but I'm not sure. (The smaller ones for items, char, etc; and the larger ones as bosses, etc.)

Also, when you choose your character, maybe you can include a stats screen (like below). I don't know how it will work out since it's just an idea.

Hmmm, the gargoyle sprite looks strangely familiar, but I don't know from where...
bfr, what does the "Attacks" tab do in the game? Store previous battles and outcomes?

EDIT: Found out why the gargoyle sprites look strangely familiar...they are almost identical to the gargoyle sprites in Heroes of Might and Magic II (it's a really old game)!

o.oblink.gif  They are?

Anyway, I'm taking out most of the Zelda tiles out later on - these are just temporary (because I haven't made my own yet).

Lachprog:  OK :)smile.gif

I made some nice progress since the last update, but then stopped working on it for a couple of months, admittedly, but I started working on it again yesterday, and I'll probably start working on it more every weekend.  I've been working on implementing another character (I'm not going to say, yet, only he knows), items and attacks are already implemented (it's fun walking around and punching the characters XDsmiley.gif - btw, the attacks can be used in other situations too, such as actual battles and related), and I improved talking (yes, the player can talk to other characters/things), but I'm going to try to not give every little detail about the updates so that the game isn't spoiled.

Is it too late to add in characters to the game? Since I only joined the forum recently... but I have been around nearly forever on IRC (dragonfire network).

I'd like to be some kind of dragon-like NPC that would teach related special techniques and provide "rare items" to those "qualified" to use them. For qualification, perhaps a boss battle or some kind of mini game?

Heh. Just a thought. But if you do decide to do it, and still need other stuff to go on, try using any the following stuff:
IRCop on dragonfire, is cherry-flavored, decent Z80 ASM programmer, obsessive-compulsive, minimalist, white and fuzzy, loves to play around, talkative on certain topics, always carries a USB flashdrive, loves Chinese and Mexican foods, somewhat insane, sometimes is random.

Post by: bfr on April 10, 2007, 10:50:00 am
I'll add you in, Iambian.  Also, good ideas - I'll probably do something like that.

Netham:  Admittedly, sorry, I didn't really work on it much over Spring Break.  I did work on a few other (less important) projects, though....  This month is going to be kind of busy, but I should start working on it more during May or June (and hopefully have a demo or something sometime near the end of June or July).
