Title: The War of Mmruda
Post by: Radical Pi on January 14, 2006, 10:37:00 am
Well, I guess it's time for me to start that RPG I said I would make.
I desperately need a storyline (I went to the ticalc.org forums, that's how desperate I am.)
What I have so far is the last fifty years history of the planet Mmruda in a nice program but can I attach that program so you don't need to type it in?
Once I figure that out I'll ask for a decent plot.

About storylines:

This is what I learned from the guy who made the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy original game.  He said that in this day an age, the role of story telling in video games has made drastic changes.  It started out as the story being the most vital part, because games were only text based.

Later, when graphics came out, stories still affected greatly.  But it wasn't until MMO and multiplayer, that stories became a part of the background.  In an RPG specifically, they play MMO to create their own story.  With MMO and open ended storyline, people can now live their own adventures.  People can talk about their LAN match in Halo where they blew up a guy so bad it looked like he got into the fetal position.

But on the calc, there is a limit to MMO and open ended capabiltiy.  That is why you must write your story as if it were a book.

My substitute English teacher once explained why English class existed:  The IMAGINATIVE world is more real than the real world, the world we physicall manipulate.  We are psychological beings, and what we interpret of the same event depends on our baggage, our experiences.  That's why we like some stories and not others.  If we like, we usually can relate to it in some mysterious way.  If we don't like, absolutely hate, then it's telling us that our life and who WE ARE has nothing to do with that story.  If we are indifferent, then perhaps it is a bad story.

Your story should stem from within.  It has to be a part of you that you want to put in the open so others can share a piece of your psychological entity.  In some way or another, a good story relates to the author and his fans in some connecting, mysterious way.

That's all I have to say about stories.

Hey you with the calculator! Come share some of my psycological entity! Wait! Don't run away...again. :cry:pleure.gif
:hi:coucou.gif

I have been told multiple times of my creative story writing skills, but games are different in my view. The way I look at it is the more detailed the storyline is, the less possibility the character can choose from. It's like listening in on a story instead of playing a game.

But I will try...

Modern gamers want to make their own story.  The just want a good back drop on things.

I didn't say be so restrictive on it, just give it more substance than a guy escaping from a bar fight finding out he is God

I can't be unrestrictive on it, that's just how I work :???:confus.gif

I did narrow it down to this:
Beginning-set out on a quest to become strong enough to end the war
End-kill Zindor and end the war

Hmm maybe that is all I need...

Open-Ended RPG game, I know it's availbe for Xbox and PC, don't know about anything else.

Sorry for the late reply, my internet was down.  I am reading the story now (couldn't open on comp :(sad.gif)  I'll give some feedback later today probably.

If you mean you're reading the calc version on calc, that's where it's best viewed (because of a little movie at the end).

For Fable, I'll see what's at gamefaqs.com.

Would you rather have the map on the top (graph) or the bottom (home)?
Top would mean better graphics.
Bottom would mean scrolling, with better menus on the top half of the screen.

That would be nice, and give me more reason to do this (nothing since demo yet).

What about optimizations? [Oh gasp, I mentioned the O word! Now my game will be pwned for sure :)smile.gif ...]
Title: The War of Mmruda
Post by: Liazon on January 26, 2006, 11:04:00 am
what does pwn mean anyways?

look man, you're doing fine.  Go at your own pace and don't let anyone pressure you to do otherwise.  Look at me, I'm definitely not going to be a good programmer any time soon because I don't have the time.  So I just learn when I can, program when I can.

I spend too much time on the forums now.
Even when I was making my demo I was here.

and since you asked nicely, I just http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn you.

So...optimizations? I'll try SourceCoder(2).

Post by: tenniskid493 on January 27, 2006, 02:14:00 am
I noticed 2 sort of bugs in the demo.  One is that when you walk along the bottom, the line disappears.  Also, I walked over the other pi symbol that I'm guessing was supposed to be another person and then when I walked away, the person disappeared as well.  Other than that, the speed was great and it worked well.  Keep up the good work.

I'll have a look at your code this afternoon and see if theres any major optimizations I can see.

Post by: Radical Pi on January 27, 2006, 11:27:00 am
The bottom line thing I really don't have an idea about.
The people thing I will change around, I knew that happened.

I decided on using Resource to archive maps dynamically...
Title: The War of Mmruda
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 27, 2006, 01:09:00 pm
i c, about the line disappearing I am wondering if you could just run a for loop that erase the whole line before loading the map, I really dunno why it dissapears

EDIT: moved there :)smile.gif
Title: The War of Mmruda
Post by: Radical Pi on January 27, 2006, 01:48:00 pm
I was trying to make it disappear, but it doesn't with line. If you watch maploading closely you see the line is erased (???) but quickly refreshes itself.

If the line wasn't there, there would be no way to distinguish the map and the menu.

More on this soon...

EDIT: I was writing this as you moved it, and it wasn't in the database for a moment...But anyway, :woot:woot.gif:woot:woot.gif:woot:woot.gif 'Tis Featured!

Cool.  I have a though that you could do.  Instead of physically using the split screen, couldnt you just make it apper that you split it.  So instead of splitting the screen, just draw a line across the screen and then use Text(-54125+1  to display the values on the lower half.  This will give it the same exact look and then you could put the line one lower and not have the problem of it erasing.

I though about that, might be another idea
Title: The War of Mmruda
Post by: tenniskid493 on January 27, 2006, 04:25:00 pm
Here's one optimization I found.  Instead of using one Output( statement w/ alot of spaces, it actually saves space to use several output statements.
Title: The War of Mmruda
Post by: Radical Pi on January 28, 2006, 03:44:00 am
I had a feeling about the outputs...

A pseudo-split-screen could be done, but the bottom menu would have to be maneuvered around to handle the loss of that row. I'll make it a stat/item display with small text.

Progress: well, keep reading...

I have been surfing random topics here, UTI, and Cemetech. My conclusion is that imaginary numbers are slow to work with, and so are lists. But my method of NPC mapping uses both. :(sad.gif:dang:banghead.gif
So I will be converting what i have done already from using real and imag to using ipart and fpart. This means I would be able to use xlib! :woot:woot.gif:woot:woot.gif:woot:woot.gif

But I have no xlib experience with it, and text sprites are that much simpler...

...fast responses...

I just made a good text sprite! The phi symbol and a + makes a nice star. Its a small start, but it looks kewl! :Dbiggrin.gif

I might use xlib, but not for sprites :Dbiggrin.gif
