Title: [Unofficial] Cage Matches - Reboot - The Tournament!
Post by: pimathbrainiac on July 12, 2014, 09:02:11 pm
Notice that I am not Raylin, and that there is [Unofficial] in the title. Also as in the title, this will be in tournament format, instead of the old format. I thought these were a really good idea, and so I'm going to pick these up for the sake of distracting me from some particular things going on in my life atm.

Spoiler For Raylin's Original Post:
CAGE MATCHES

Have you the nerve to try?
Have you the need for speed?
Can you crank out quality code in no time at all?

Put your reputation on the line and step up to the plate.
This, good sirs, is the true test of coding.

Hello, Omnimagician. Welcome to the Cage Matches.
This is where your mettle will be pitted again another strong competitor whose wants to prove his worth as well.
The rules of this are simple: Make a game of said theme within the time limit.

For starters, you must send me a PM with your programming languages so I can add you to the roster.

Every (other) week, starting in October, two random people will be the contestants for that Cage Match.
A contestant has exactly 24 hours to reply. If a contestant does not reply, another contestant will be picked.
When both contestants have done so, the deadline is set a week or two from the top of the hour.
(Top of the hour means that if the PM is replied to at 8:23, the deadline is a week from now at 9. All times are in CDT (GMT -5.)).
The theme will be picked at random.
The language will be picked at random.
If the language is C or ASM, some code must be sent inside of the PM to assure that a contestant isn't over his head.
The result of the contest will be based a poll that the community votes on. (I will also be casting my vote.)
The winner gets fame, prestige, and a userbar.

That is all.

Make the very best game you can think of in exactly 30 days.

Rules:

*This must be for the TI-83+.
*There cannot be a shred of Hybrid BASIC.
*No Axe subroutines.
*No ASM (unless it is on this (http://tibasicdev.wikidot.com/hexcodes) page). Yes, I know that there is a loophole there.
*No late entries.
*No exceptions. At all.
*Submit to me ([email protected]) <- reverse the 'moc'.
*You cannot vote for your own entry.

Protips:
*Try not to make clones of other games.
*IF YOU SUBMIT A WRFNG PROGRAM, I WILL STAB YOU.

Same rules apply as well. This starts when over 50% of the people accept after the 20th.

So instead of the exact same rules and categories, I'm going to modify this a bit.
Here is my (slightly ripped off) post for this (unofficial) reboot.

For starters, you must send me a PM with your programming languages (you can do more than 1) so I can add you to the roster.

Valid categories/languages are as follows:

8x grayscale calcs:
84+CSE
Nspire calcs:

In August (August 3rd, to be precise) (August 31st, so nothing conflicts with Cemetech Contest #12), a single-elimination bracket will be posted in this topic/post, along with which contestants will be competing that week (one pair per category). The bracket will be made by me, using a very subjective ranking system.
Each week a pair in each category from the bracket will be chosen to compete, along with a subject for the week.
The subject is for each week, not each week/category. All categories will have to program the same subject matter in their respective languages/platforms.
Contestants will be PM'd, and have 24 hours to reply, if a contestant does not reply, the one who replied moves on, as if there were a bye.
When both contestants in each category have replied, the deadline is set a week from the top of the hour.

The results each week will be based on a poll that the community votes on. (I will also be casting my vote.) Thou shalt not vote for thineself. I will also be competing in a few categories.
The winners get fame, prestige, and cookies, sent in bytes over the internet.

That is all.

You can put me in Axe. At worst I'll get disqualified by doing nothing but if I don't suscribe, I wouldn't be able to enter :)

Well the rules said send me a PM, but a reply in this topic works as well, I guess :P

Hayleia and willrandship added. Signups end the second this starts, so there will be plenty of time to sign up (more than a month, at this point)

Axe and Basic for me. Also, who would one create a game in Nspire Basic?

For the challenge of making something good in such a terrible language, of course!

Do you mean signups for the current round, or forever?

For this tournament rendition. Unlike Raylin's Cage Matches, this is set up as a single-elimination tournament. Once this is complete, there will be more signups and another tournament, then another once that completes, etc.

Bumpity Bumpity Bump!

I'll be away for a week for band camp, but I'd like to remind people that you can still sign up by posting in this thread or PM-ing me, preferably the latter. I'd love to see more competitors, so this tournament can be a success. Also please note that if I ever can get a prize for each category winner, I'll make an announcement here that there will be prizes.

Note that since JWinslow23 started his own contest almost at the same time as yours, it might be hard to get many participants, but I think his contest ends soon, so unless he immediately starts a 2nd round you might be fine. :P

THe issue is that there are currently two other contests going on, sort of, although one set of contests is smaller and not necessarily calc-related. Anyway it would be nice if this was revived :P

Code golf shouldn't interfere with the cage matches. It's open to wide entries, weekly, and doesn't take much time, whereas cage matches will be locked between two people for any given match, and have a longer timespan. I think it would be easy for them to coexist.

If you look at the date, this will start after Contest #12 wraps up. Also that with what will said about code golf.

That said I doubt that Cage Matches will be very long either. Back then, it was mostly stuff like Tunnel games rather than very large games, because the time frame was much shorter than your usual Cemetech or Omni contest.

That said, when Cemetech contest ends there is often an Omni contest starting too anyway :P

Omni tends to be quiet about contests since I left my admin duties, as the new team is less vocal about upcoming stuff (perhaps to avoid giving false hopes if it ever gets delayed or canceled). Usually people wonder if there is even going to be a contest at all. IIRC there will be one, though, but I don't exactly know if it's gonna start immediately after Cemetech's deadline like last year.

Also considering how much hassle it was to ship prizes last year (thanks to stupid USPS regulations against batteries), the potential for issues with underage contestants (parents getting scared of seeing a random package arriving from the Internets in the mail) and international shipments, I'm wondering if the team will go back to 2009-11 contest prizes (which were entirely digital, such as a $100 gift card on iTunes, Newegg or another store of your choice)
