Greetings. That "Maplen TI-82" I made (http://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=219811 (http://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=219811)) is now available for auction on eBay. It eh, is interesting, please tell all your friends and teachers about this: I especially envision this on a teacher's desk or something, as it's not terribly useful, being a TI-82, more iconic and a work of art. Here is a picture, for those who haven't seen:
It's available here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111380133505 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/111380133505).
Please consider bidding, but again, I just hope all who could be interested will see it. :) And, there is a youtube video in the Cemetech topic I linked to first. Thank you.
-
Does it work?
EDIT: Never mind, I read the Cemetech. How did you make it?
-
Gotta read more of the Cemetech for that! ;) It is, I want to say, very painstakingly handmade (with electric tools), not with like a Carvewright or something. Every button is individually made, for example!
-
Dang O.O O.O O.O
I've always wanted to do something like that but don't have the tools or the knowledge (or the patience, for that matter :P )
edit: I saw the video and this thing looks nicer than a regular 82. I especially like how you made the keys like a ti83+/84.
-
Great job ! :D The original 82 is ugly imo, and you fixed that.
-
Shut up and take my money! :P
Well, assuming the auction doesn't go up to $1000 or something and/or that I win. I always wondered if you would ever produce multiple copies of this or put the first to auction one day :D
-
I remember seeing this over at Cemetech. It's really a beauty. I'm actually kind of surprised that you're selling it. I've got it on the watch list for now. ;)
-
Walp it's still at $46 since yesterday. :P
-
When I saw it, it was at $40
Sort of cheap for something you seem to have put a lot of effort into.
I would try to get it if I didn't owe $200/can't use ebay.
-

Sadly thats been my experiance with handmade crafts :/
-
Welp people sell retro consoles for insane prices just because they have a modchip inside. There's obviously much more work that went into this than into soldering 4 wires.
-
I saw a N-spire with TI-presenter bidding for $0.99
-
That's way overpriced ;)
-
We all know being paid for having an Nspire is overpriced anyway.

Yep... I want one for free but my friend will 100% not give his to me because he loves it...

Plus the fact it's a calculator, although I'm surprised since TI calcs sell very fast on Ebay normally. Maybe most people who buy them just buy them for school and don't care about fancy stuff. I'm betting that people will bid at the last minute, though.
EDIT: Question: What ROM does it use? I have a 82 with ROM 16.0 that can barely run anything because most programs were made for ROM 19.0 and 19.0006 >.<
-
I wonder what would the price be if you made a TI-81 one.
What would happen if you dropped it (as I do to my TI-83+ at least once everyday on accident)
-
Wow, this is looking awesome :O
I wonder how heavy it is

Thanks for the compliments. :)

I agree, I think the TI-83-esque makeover is an improvement!
Shut up and take my money! :P

Thanks for bidding/watching! Yeah, it'd be cool for me to keep it forever, but I know there are other in the community who would enjoy owning it, while I have the ability make a new one, plus I bought a mess of 8 Dell D620 laptops and am now broke, so I hope to raise funds to repair them.

So true. But it depends on how I look at it: in one way, I paid $15 for this and am selling it for possibly $50; a $35 profit, which is decent. On the other hand I put 34 hours of work into it, making my wage about $1 an hour, not so good. :) So depends on how I look at it.
Question: What ROM does it use? I have a 82 with ROM 16.0 that can barely run anything because most programs were made for ROM 19.0 and 19.0006 >.<
Actually it has 18.0! :/ So not 19.0, but I have tested and ran CrASH, zTris, Penguins, and some other stuff with no trouble.
What would happen if you dropped it (as I do to my TI-83+ at least once everyday on accident)
I wonder how heavy it is
Well, while I wouldn't say it's lighter than a normal 82, it's still pretty light, because maple is light. Also, if you dropped it it'd probably do pretty well - maple is quite tough and strong. I like it. Though I wouldn't recommend dropping it over 2 feet to a hard surface. Oh, and some hot-glued components inside might come apart
-
Epoxy >>>>>> hot glue. :P
-
Liquid Nails >>>>>>> hot glue :P
(with wood at least)
-
Liquid nails ?

the 81 is much cheaper than the 82 on Ebay, but since it's the first TI calc, it would most likely have a bigger interest from the TI community, nostalgia-wise more than coding-wise.
-
Liquid nails ?
Seems to be some super glue: http://www.selleys.com.au/trade/building-products/construction-adhesives/liquid-nails-high-strength/

Yeah, this stuff is awesome with wood (but a bit messy!) ;)
-
Ah well I just use wood glue for wood. :P
-
Ah well I just use wood glue for wood. :P
Isn't wood glue only meant for wood?
P.S. Epic Digress
-
Yeah, being a weird wooden-cased and thus not as useful as a plastic-cased calc, I shoulda used an 81. But I didn't have one on hand.
-
Welp you should have used an Nspire. That would have sold for a fair price. :P
-
If you got it at TI price, it would be a small ripoff.
Do a four-function calc :)
-
Well, if I had had the choice, blah blah blah. A CSE might've been cool in it too. But I used a TI-82 because I had an extra 82 and an extra 85, and the 85 had better eBay value so I sold it.
DJ Omnimaga: Hope you win it :) The current high bidder is actually Elfprince!
Oh, and wooden 4-function calcs are actually already available on eBay.
-
Good thing it's not a TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, a Casio PRIZM, a TI-Nspire or a TI-80, though, because those things seems to break easily (although in the Nspire case, it's mostly due to people not using certain Ndless programs properly)
-
I wonder if all the bids so far are from members of the community. ???
-
Most likely they are. Most of the calc enthusiasts are on a calc forum.
-
Must but not all :P
Same with the knex community until suddenly that one awesome dude creeped along youtube without being anywhere else o.o
-
Well in my beginnings I was very much offline even when I started axe. :P
-
Also, let's bet on who'll receive the calc
-
I wish I had any money, because i would seriously want this in my collection of calcs, besides, I would already like to have a TI-82
-
Also, let's bet on who'll receive the calc
Mine's on DJ. :P
-
Same XD
-
I'll bet one wooden TI-82 on Eeems. ;) But this "maximillion" fellow seems pretty serious; anyone know who he is? I don't.

I WILL outbit him!

Oh you're in too Eeems ? Nice !

/me sees this thing rising to over 9000 :P
-

Nah, I'll probably stop around $100
-
I didn't say in which currency
-
Yen! :w00t:
-
Yen is damn cheap. It's probably exceeded it by far now. :P
-
$67 with Eeems so far.
-
Yeah I probably won't go higher than $100 because I had plenty of game purchases lately and still need to buy Mario Kart 8, 1 concert ticket and probably one for another show. I'm also planning to get an Xbox One at one point.
-
$67 with Eeems so far.
Nobody seems to want to challenge that yet. I may want to increase max bid a little just in case.

Increase it indefinatley :P
-
Yeah, I think by what Elfprince said on Cemetech that he's out, and Kerm might bid, but hasn't much yet... so unless maximillionfriday wants to return, it could end there (and it ends today). CVSoft predicted it'd level off around $65; so far he's marvelously correct!
Get your wooden calculator ready, DJ O betters...
-
Watch TI sue you for removing the Texas Instruments logo. :p
-
Better not have that happen D:
-
I don't think they will. I think they'd be more likely to sue for using it. Now, using "TI-82" maybe - I coulda used "SL-82" to avoid that...
Only two hours remain! And another person I don't know, allyourbase, has entered.
-
What does SL-82 stand for? Why not CH-82?
-
I do stuff under the "company" name SkyLites - SL. My eBay name is SkylitesProducts, and the calculator says "Skylites" on it in very large sloppy letters :P Well, not letters - it's a logo format. The top of the first S and the bottom on the second reach to the L in the middle. I also sign my other weird wooden things and my software with Skylites.
-
<OmnomIRC> (O)* CalebHansberry waits with bated breath for the "okay awesome. why is it called 'skylites' though?"
so, why? :P
-
It's kinda complicated, I'll explain later :)
only 30 minutes left!
-
Woo! Babied that for the last 15 minutes to make sure nobody would snipe it.
-
Wow for some reasons Ebay didn't e-mail me to warn me that the auction ended soon. It always does normally. Maybe because I bidded from Ebay.com instead of Ebay.ca. Oh well, congrats to the winner :D. May The Game be with you.

I use the app to get notifications.

Yay Eeems won the one and only wooden graphing calculator! and I won the bet that he'd win :P
It ended at $70, $5.80 shipping.
-
Do you mean a mobile app? I would like it but then my phone would scream about lack of diskspace (which is what happens on every Facebook update, even though I use my SD card for Facebook).
-
Congratulations Eeems ! :D
-
I'm excited for the secret project Eeems, Caleb and I were discussing on IRC. And no, I'm not planning on being selfish anymore.

Secret in a publicly logged channel ;P

It's only 24.16MB as opposed to Facebook's 101MB Shouldn't be as much of a problem
-
Wait Facebook is that huge ? O.O Glad I deleted my account anyway. :P
-
Grats Eeems! You got an awesome calc on the way. :D
-
Congrats Eeems!
Shall we expect some calc projects of you again? :P
-

Prolly not. You can expect something out of this for you guys though.

Wait, omnis server will update from an TI-80 to an TI-82? O.O

Wait, you guys run a server on a calc without any link port capabilities? O.O

Of course we do. Best use for it.

As long as you don't destroy nor brick the calc :P

Brick a wooden calc?
-
inb4 caleb makes a brick calc so that you can brick it even better :P
-
o.o
I'll be taking a break for now from wooden calcs, actually, to devote my attention to making a wooden laptop.
-
Wooden laptop ? Now I definitely want to see that happen. :D
Also lol at brick calc.
-
I think you will~
-
wooden laptop would be so epic O.O
-
Wow, that's amazing. Can't wait to see this happen O.O
-
Be sure to post pics of such laptop when it starts progressing! :D
-
What type of laptop and what OS?
-
o.o
I'll be taking a break for now from wooden calcs, actually, to devote my attention to making a wooden laptop.
That sounds awesome! :o Can't wait to see it!
-
Thanks guys, I'll be sure to keep you updated! :)
Well as to OS, Windows I'm sure; I can't stand Linux. But as to what type, that's under consideration right now, because wood is a great insulator of heat, so I'll need it to run cool. Any suggestions of laptops you know to run cool? So far the only recommendation is "one with a Pentium M".
-
Hence why ultrabooks are metal. :P
-
Quite true; so is my own laptop.
-
One with an Intel Atom (might be called a "netbook" due to extreme slowness).
-
I can't stand Linux.
Interesting statement. There are many different flavours of Linux. Some of which look/act pretty much the same as windows. Me-thinks you have just had very little exposure to Linux and have preconceived notions as to how it acts.
That aside, you should probably start a different thread for the wooden laptop.
-
harold: Indeed the Atom is a possibility.
Eeems: No, I actually like the interface of what I've seen or used (Ubuntu, Mint, really old Red Hat) just fine, but what I can't stand is the kooky(aka not-ntfs or fat) file system, inability to run .exe files easily (it was continually trying to open programs as archives), and driver difficulties.
And yeah, I will start a topic about it after I get well started on the first prototype - I need to choose the wood as well - and while I'm at it I bet we'll need to make a new Linux topic XD
-

Erm, linux filesystems have way better permission control then FAT. NTFS itself is copying a lot of features that ext3/4 offer (Like the permission scheme). Windows executable are archives and are not actually able to run by default on Linux. You'd have to install wine and set it so that .exe files are opened with wine to work. Linux executables (not .exe, usually they have no extension) have the executable flag flipped and thus file managers know to prompt for how to run them. Your problems with Linux sound like user training issues ;)
And yeah, I will start a topic about it after I get well started on the first prototype - I need to choose the wood as well - and while I'm at it I bet we'll need to make a new Linux topic XD
Sounds good, feel free to prod me to split this topic if you want the original thread as part of the new thread.
-
Well yeah, extN is much better than NTFS. I personally use BtrFS tho. :P

Hehe, nice one :P
-
How I couldn't think about this before? --"
The calc was too expensive for me. I hope to see a 84+ like that! (And it'll be called Bender! :p)
-
Make sure the laptop can be opened easily compared to the wooden calc, in case you have to replace the hard drive or something.
-
So, I've just been informed that the package arrived at my house. I'll get pics when I get home tonight.
-
I hope stupid Canada Post won't charge you extra fees on delivery. When packages are labeled as gifts this won't happen and some stores usually did that so customers won't pay fees, but nowadays Canada Post can detect purchases easier, especially if there's a label on the package with the price and stuff and a company name.

Glad to hear you work it! :D However, that (The) Game of Thrones t-shirt... it made me lose <_<
I hope the calc still works and doesn't have missing colums of pixels lol.
-
Now that is one badass with a badass calc ! :D

Aside from there being some sawdust on the screen, everything seems to be in working order.
-
You got yourself an awesome calculator Eeems :)
-
Yay it arrived! :D I'm sorry about the sawdust; I knew it was there, but try as I might to remove it, it kept coming back in. And I was hoping it wouldn't get broken somehow in international transport.
-
Get that enormous grin off your face, eeems. JK I would totally be the same if I got such an awe-inspiring calculator. Congrats on getting it :D

i think this is a problem with most older calcs that have an extra layer to protect the screen. Even the infamous HP 49G had it. I don't think I have this problem with my color calcs, though.
-
Well, but even older calcs didn't usually have /sawdust/ in the screen. :P And yeah, the extra layer trapped it :/ Next time it won't be an older model, so won't have that.
-
But wasn't it possible to remove it since you completely replaced the case ?
-
I figured it probably needed it, since it had it - like maybe the screen was more delicate.

my 81, 82 and 85 got a little bit of dust under the screen cover.

Sorry, I won't show any emotion next time. :P

Here is a picture I took of it that I thought was a little cool, though blurry:

Yeah I like that pic actually. if only it was less blurry x.x
-
Yeah it looks cool. I like the bluish color it has on that pic. :)
