Title: Complain about ti here: helping me with my homework.
Post by: Happybobjr on August 22, 2010, 05:53:39 pm
For my assignment i chose to do the  wonders of ti.  (more like blunders)

Post anything about ti or ti calculators that really pisses you off.
Please keep it with in these for calculators;
* ti-83+ series
*ti-nspire

or anything about costumer cares.  I know alot of us have complaining to do.

Edit:

* Ti-Nspire: os 2.1
           prevents from downgrading.
           Unlockable with n-leash

* Ti-Nspire: no native asm support

I know i am double posting, but it feels like a more appropriate way to start this topic.

1.  Ti-nspire os 2.1
           prevents from downgrading.

OS 2.53 broke many programs for the 84

Nspire 84 emulator is not too good...

No 89 OS update in about 6 years (maybe that is a good thing though :P)

Also, I would be careful using things like no programming support because some teachers might think that this is a good thing.

I will try to think of more faults later! (I have to go eat soon)

good luck on digesting your sustenance.
I will bend the truth here and there. (os 2.53MP broke many programs made by ti for ti.)

What were the prices for ti-84 10 yrs ago?

price went up for old tech.

how would that go against the copyright?

1. The Ti-Nspire, Texas Instruments current “in style” calculator has just recently updated the operating system to OS v2.1.  At the same time, preventing the installation of “any and all” previous operating systems.  About 2 weeks later, outraged N-spire users finished a program  that exploits a problem with TI-Nspire Clickpads. The problem lies in the order of activation in the restarting the OS.  Running the program on the computer and following a few simple instructions, allows you to install whatever operating system you want.  What took years to make by TI, only took two weeks to undo.

2. Texas Instruments has always been proud of their calculators for providing the best educational software they could.  When the Ti-Nspire came out, TI focused on the making and sharing of documents that students could make and share.  So why have they left out something they have had in previous calculators that opened up 3rd party educational program?  Texas Instruments decided not to put any native asm (assembly) support, even though most commands are used in the operating system.  After some time however, brilliant programmers developed a program named N-Leash. N-Leash opens all native asm commands for programs to use.

It doesn't; that's why we hate them so much.
Another one: calcs are way overpriced for their hardware capabilities.
And fyi the exploit is called Ndless, not Nleash. I get all the "N" names confused too :P

opps thank you very much on that.

I can't remember where on here i saw this but,    Maybe ti calculators are still over priced because theres only one or two people left that remember how to make such a crappy display.

3.  After many years Texas Instruments proudly release operating system 2.53 Math-Print.  The new os provided very few new features, and for the most part did nothing but make everything look “pretty”.  It wasn’t a very brilliant update.  Instead of actually fixing problems, they caused more.   They apparently didn’t check their coding very well, as if you used certain functions together, the calculator would crash, and you would lose most of your valuable information on it.  Not to fear TI, people are used to cleaning up after you.  A person that goes by the name of BrandonW took the time, and within a couple of weeks created a patch that would fix all the errors that accompanied the update.  Texas Instruments still haven’t fixed it for themselves yet.

768??? whats cool about that?  sry i might be being nooby here,,,

4. Ti-nspire occasionally have hardware updates.  Unfortunately Texas Instruments either knew or cared about compatibility with their older models of the Nspires.  The power management bug takes place where an older calculator tries to run operating system 1.1.  Every time you want to use it, you must remove the keypad, then take out a battery.  Then you should replace both the keypad and the battery.  Press the On button and the calculator will boot up fully within the next 1-5 minutes.  If you choose not to, the calculator will do a continuous restart until it runs out of power.

768 is the number of bytes in the screen buffer.

5. It appears that the Ti-89, which is one of the most powerful calculators Texas Instruments has ever made, has been abandoned.  It has nearly been six years since the last update of the ti-89’s operating system.  Is TI preparing for a massive update, or did they stop caring?  Whatever the reason, many Ti-89 owners are disappointed with the lack of effort on Texas Instruments part on keeping the calculators alive.

6. They killed the 85 and 86. (The 86 was 86'd :P) Great calcs, both had a memory-mapped display making for easy greyscale. 86 had as much RAM as the 83+SE but the OS made it all available, and it had ASM support (The 85 had as much as an 83+). The OS (both calcs) had more features than the 83+ Series calcs, had soft-keys, and allowed custom matrix and real variable names. Programs were run w/o any prgm prefix. Had easily accessible lower-case and Greek letters, not to mention other symbols. I could continue ;D If only they made upgradeable versions with Flash ROM.

actually the 85 had as much user RAM as the 82. 28 KB, while the 83 had 27, the 73 25 and the 83+/84+/SE 24
Title: Re: Complain about ti here: helping me with my homework.
Post by: calcdude84se on August 22, 2010, 09:15:46 pm
I'm talking hardware. The 82, 83, and 85 have 32KB, while the 83+SE, an older 84+(SE), and the 86 have 128KB.
At any rate the 86 had user accessible all memory that was not reserved by the OS.

here's a one which i found that is ridiculous (hope it's not already said)
TI-nspire: everytime you go into ti84 mode (and the batteries have been removed at one point) the ram clears
TI thought it would be a GREAT idea to return to the 1990 when the ram for a TI-81 reset every time the calc was turned on (Credit: DJ omni)

i just realised that verdant posted on this topic. outrageous!
all he does is complain about a community that is thriving and friendly

Yeah it's not the first time he does this. I don't know what kind of brother or sister Bwang got but he's sure quite arrogant. He used Bwang account back then to post crap like that. Now Bwang lives in a different area so I guess the person is free to use the computer more often than he wants, and is possibly jealous that Bwang can do all that stuff on calc.

At one point I may be forced to ban Bwang's parents home IP address so he won't be able to post anymore from there :/

Btw there are no language rules here but it was rather spammish.

terrible, but you aren't meant to use someone else's account, especially a staff account. verdant should look at other programs and learn himself. that's how i learnt myself. but then again he doesn't feel the thrill of creating a game, despite the hard work, he just plays them and takes them for granted.

if he really had to say it then once a post. but 15 times??? too far. ban him i think

Yeah and it's a quite bad one, because spamming forums with trolls is as bad as bullying/harrassment. The only less bad thing is that it can be completly avoided by closing the computer screen, but it's harder to block remotely if the person is tech-savy.
