Title: Does anyone have a Ti 86?
Post by: ztrumpet on December 19, 2009, 10:32:27 am
Hi. I just got a Ti 86!  I was wondering if anyone had one or knew anything about one.
Thanks!

The 86 has the best selection of ASM games available, go download everything in the 86 asm section on ticalc, and you will be busy for a looong time. =D

Yeah true it has a lot of awesome ASM games (altough the 83+ series got stuff like Chips and TI-Boy SE), I really need to try some at one point, since I got one almost a year ago.

DJ, you have one?  Do you use it much?

After making some programs, I've decided it's a cross between 83/84 basic and C++, the only languages I know. :)

I really like the menus and the wider screen.

I kind of like it in overall, it's not too hard to get used to and it doesn't take a while either, compared to moving from 83+ to 89. I only use it to play games, though, because very few people use the TI-86 anymore so if I made games for it, it would not get any decent audience. On top of that, BASIC programs runs slower on the 86 than on the TI-82 through 85 :(

TI-86 is so far the only that attracts me to get it. It was discontinued but seems it was also a great calculator.
Does TI-86 have compatibility with TI-85 stuff?

Also I wanted to know how to do compatibility between TI-83 family and the TI-85 in assembly to someone easily port with the source code and an assembler (SPASM is a great one)...

Maybe I can get my hands on a Voyager but that stays for another topic.

It appears so.  When linking I can Send, Recieve, or Send to 85.

But not to 83. That's an enormous pain.

Can I ever convert code from 83 to 86?

Edit: Will the silver link cable and Ti Connect work with the 86?

In response to your questions in order:
Yes, my favorite calc for a long time.
No, but the BASIC is similar enough.
Yes.

I think converting 83 code to 86 is a matter of Find/replace in TI-Graph Link 86 (after copying the 83 code). Once most stuff is replaced with find/replace tools, all you need to worry about is if you use Output( commands with strings longer than 16 characters or Disp number commands, then you will have display issues

There can be a speed drop, too. The slowest version of Illusiat 81 aside from the TI-81 version has been the TI-86 one, so far. Even the 85 one seems to run faster.

Also, TI-86 programs are much bigger than on a 83+, even when tokenized, so watch out if you want to port a massive game like ROL2 or Illusiat 12

I belive 'Blinded by the Dark' was for 86?  It looked like an uber cool game, and you might want to check that out :)

Yeah it was. It's friggin hard IIRC, though. I tried it once.

Also in response to other people question, you can send TI-85 BASIC games to the TI-86 and they should work. I don't know if equations are interpreted the same way on it, though (on the 82, some maths are not calculated the same way than on newer calcs, and the 85 came out one year before the 82).

Also keep in mind most TI-85/86 BASIC games are terrible quality since people did not have all the tricks 83+ users got in their hands.

Also yunhua98, you totally mispelled "peanuts" there x.x

I'M kinda off-topic, tho.

Btw has anyone tried Dragon Quest for the 86? I need to try the grayscale Mario one day.

THe only thing I dislike about the 86 is that TI-BASIC programs are 1.5x slower than on the 82, 83, 83+, 84+ and the 85 and are much larger than on those (although not signifiantly larger than on the 85)
