Title: How are we even supposed to beat that? O.O
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 23, 2013, 12:23:19 am
Download available at Ticalc.org. Game is called Mr Explore and is unfinished, but I think it's harder than Legand of Zelda: Sord of Atari and Donut Quest O.O

Yeah it looks pretty cool. I'll probably get my 84 back today so I'll be able to try it. :D

Yeah it's amazing. I wish it was finished. I wish, however, that that last part in the screenie was made possible to beat, though. <_<

Cool! An NES-hard platformer? Or less hard?

More like 10 times worse than Ghosts 'n' Goblins, starting in that one room in the screenshot. But it is possible that it is the last room and that the author made it close to impossible to prevent going further and getting a RAM clear or something.

That actually looks pretty cool! I am glad somebody spotted this before it got lost in the other uploads!

It does not look so bad.

The issue is how slippy the floor is and how hard it is to long jump from such short distance. It requires perfect, tool-assisted-like timing. X.x

Oh I did not notice the floor was slippy

It is indeed a bit hard. Also if we figure out the source, we might be able to fix these issues. ;)

BTW I had to re-sign the app. If you can't send it I can upload it.

I think the author made movement like that just so that physics remains as realistic as possible. However, it is a bit too slippery I think for such small maps and precise jumping requirements and it would work better for a game like Sonic. Had this been finished with walking physics at least similar to SMB1 (where it's far more responsive) it would probably have a reasonable difficulty level. Right now, if you barely tap the directional keys you don't even move at all and if you hold down the key for a while longer you can't stop fast enough.

It's a great game so far in general and if it was easier and I could notice a lot of more rooms, I could have made  a news.

I hope the author intends to finish this. It looks fantastic from the screenies! :D

I doubt it, sadly, because in his readme he mentions that he's done with calc programming and has since moved on to more powerful platforms. From what I remember from the readme too, I think it has been a long while since he actually worked on that calc game.

Yea, just saw that. :/ Too bad he didn't include the source.

@AoC: well, I think that the author does not intend to finish this... From the README:
Quote
This game is far from complete, I've stopped this project half a year ago, because it grew too large in size and I needed to make it a multipage app, which was unfortunately not featured by axe. I've decided to stop developping for the TI by now, so I could concentrate on much more stronger platforms, so I decided to show you all my masterpiece.

There's at least one bug which could make the game unpleasant to use. From the README again:
Quote
Since it is incomplete, there are rooms where you fall in an infinite gap if you enter them.
If this happens, you have to erase your savefile, which is an application variable called EXPLORED, and restart your whole game all over again.

I nevertheless posted a topic about the game, linking this topic, on TI-Planet.

Yeah my screenshot even demonstrates that bug ;D (although I end up falling in the room below)

That bug and especially the resulting loss of game progress is another reason why I didn't make a news about it here. Too bad, because it had lots of potential.

I wonder if he still has the source code on his hard drive? If someone wants to continue that game badly, maybe he could ask him?

This game does look great, and has amazing potential! It's a shame the author has moved on to other things!

I wish I had more free time so that I could make a similar style game :( Maybe one day lol

The source is included in the zip file. ;) Anyone willing to improve can do it.

I thought they were all external game files? ???

Nope. All source files. I thought that too until I opened them up. Though I don't know which one to compile. :/

Yeah not much info was given in the readme, so I thought this was closed source or something.

Wow, that game is looking hard&fun! :D
I should try it out.

Ahh, that's good to know. :) I just looked at i briefly, so like DJ, I just thought they were external files.

I wonder if that game was done around the Axe physics craze times? Maybe it was actually meant for one or another contest here before. I wouldn't be surprised if the author has an account here too. Now if only everyone who moved on to different platforms stayed here anyway (in the non-calc project sub-forums)

UPDATE! I finally beat the room! Just don't jump the first time, since running will pass over the hole anyway, then make sure to jump over the two moving spike things in time, but do not fall in the right room because it's empty and you fall forever. Just go in the small pit and then you reach another room. Two rooms later, however, it's yet another impossible room. :P
