Title: How do you feel about POTY Awards?

Hey guys, I was wondering how you feel about POTY awards :P

6th option, because I tend to not do utilities like Ndless, DCS and Axe and if I do games, I never really do much games using copyrighted titles like Zelda or Mario. Just having the Zelda and Mario title increases your chances to win POTY.

It seems like people like the POTY less than they used to, though. A problem is that while a lot of programs get featured, the fact they tend to be featured late, that sometimes the community has to fight to get them featured (like Axe Parser) and the lower amount of news has caused the amount of votes to not be very high. Also there's the fact that it makes it unfair if two ultra-notable programs gets featured the same year (example: Doors CS 7 and Axe or Desolate and Acelgoyobis) because only one win. It seems that people would prefer if all features were considered equal instead of trying to tell which one is better than the other.

But personally I don't mind if I win or not, as long as I get featured. I think it can be fun if there's a little competition every year or so, though, because it can encourage people to work harder on programs to get featured.

I hope I can get a feature this year with a program (yet to do). There's also a change tiDE is featured, but not even sure if Sir plans on having all of us as authors.

I just prefer PC Development rather than Calculator Development.

Although, if POTY was set up with different categories, kinda like the Oscars, that would probably help...

yeah the Oscars were cool because of this ;D

Also, I'm not sure how ticalc.org staff decides what gets featured or not. They only feature good stuff, but do they feature all good stuff?

True. Usually utilities competes against programming tools and games. But during the second part of 2010, with the exception of July, I noticed it took everything to get a program featured. I think I had to bug ticalc.org about 3 times to get Axe featured when it reached maturity. It is far less bad than in 2007-08, though. At least the current staff did a good job in overall so far and files are still processed rather fast compared to what I've seen before.

I remember in 2007-08 files got added once per month and about 200 would show up on the front page. It was typical to see the pending queue reach 300-600. http://web.archive.org/web/20080619150113/http://www.ticalc.org/

@Scout ticalc features everything they judge newsworthy. People can e-mail them feature suggestions, but the staff have the last word. The problem for the most part is that they're busy and the most active staff doesn't own a z80 calc, so TI-84 Plus and TI-Nspire stuff gets missed easily or featured extremly late. They test programs before featuring them to judge if they're good or not, but it doesn't help if they do not own the calculator the program runs on.

For categories there could be something like:
-Most innovative
-Best rpg
-best casual game
-best development tool/shell (there aren't to many of these)
-best action game
-best math/science tool (there are few good ones out there)

Or it could be broken up by development language so:
-best TI-BASIC program
-best z80 asm program
-best axe program
-best modified basic program (bbc xlib)

7th option. I feel like total shit right now.

It needs to not be split too much either, though. SOme years there were like 8 featured programs and the 68K category had like 3-5.
7th option. I feel like total shit right now.
What happened????? O.O

5.  It'll probably take a while before I get even featured lol.  :P

I rather like those options, but I think that the community involvement would have to pick up a bit before that could happen.

(speaking of which, I'm headed over to see the results :D)

I think this is missing a key option: My goal is not to obtain awards; it is to learn, have fun, and produce things others may appreciate.

It seems that no POTY winners have voted yet

No! I didn't want that, I thought of it, but didn't want it, because everyone thinks will vote that ("I'll be a very nice person if I say I don't care about trophies"). But now you added it in. Whatever, I can't complain.

Yeah that's a good option I think. Personally I don't really mind.

We don't mind, but if we win, the better!

I voted, but I think it would be extremely difficult to win again so the closest thing to my opinion was the last option.

My opinion is that even if i were to win, programing in axe, Quigibo would still be the winner :P

i would like to win an award, still need work on completing some programs first though...

Well, at least two POTY winners have voted here, Quigibo and me - but he wrote that he voted for the last option, and that's what I did too, for the same reason as the one he gave: I have won an award on ticalc and on TI-Bank, but I don't think I could win another one.

Code: [Select]
I can win one any time! 0 (0%)
I have won one and feel I can win another easily 0 (0%)

lol, nobody wins POTY's all the time.

That could be possible, though, if someone writes the program people like the most every year. O.O

They'd have to release a really good OS/Shell/Programming Language every year XD

Not necessarily. In 2004 someone won with a Pinball game and tr1p1ea was second with Desolate.

I like how axe won, but I'm suprised DorrsCS7 by our old friend kerm only got 19.x percent O.O

EDIT: my choice is I would like to get a POTY, I just need to work some more

Yeah same. I thought both Axe and DCS would be more even, like in the 40-60s. I voted for Axe as I waited for such program for almost a decade (a basic language running as fast or close as ASM and utilizing the BASIC tokens, compiled into machine code), but I was disappointed to see DCS didn't get more votes.

I voted for Axe, mainly because that was the only program on the list that I had had any experience with at the time.

Axe
DCS
Mimas

I voted for Axe because it's what made me enter the calculator community, although if it was next year, I'd probably be voting Doors CS ;D

Indeed, you must finish Portal X and Serenity for next year ;D

We sometimes start coding and the idea is awesome, we feel like we can even get a POTY! However, when we start the coding we find it harder than we imagined. That's why I tend to have low expectactions on my software :)

Yeah it's why if we did not code massive projects before, we must start small enough. Else we get overwhelmed at the hard work.

Hmmmm if i was serious about getting a POTY, you think finishing *both* programs would split votes for me? o.O in any event, I currently think PortalX is a lot closer to being completed than Serenity O.O
Title: Re: How do you feel about POTY Awards?

Oh wait, true. X.x It might be best to have one a year lol. I hope to play them soon, though. :P

But yeah you're right. I had this happen with Reuben series and XXR. Reuben 1 came out too late for 2004 POTY and Reuben 2 came out only 3 weeks later (although 2 months on ticalc because they had no file archiver). Later during the year XXR got featured (and made Engadget). XXR was the 3rd file with most votes. Had Reuben 1 and 2 not been featured, I wonder if we would have gotten a 3 files tie breaker (with Emu8x and Wizards) O.O . Also if Reuben 1 came out a few weeks earlier it would have competed against 17 other files along with ROL3 and Zelda (although they barely got any votes)

But I thought it was coming out tomorrow? (http://xkcd.com/9/)
Title: Re: How do you feel about POTY Awards?
Post by: Builderboy on January 22, 2011, 03:13:14 pm
Yeah x.x I imagine it must be pretty tricky to plan logistics against the POTY, the best bet is to just make the best program possible, but even that can be a challenge sometimes :P

EDIT: That comic is the 9th oldest XKCD comics :P

Lol Yunhua98, you had my hopes up the other day on IRC. :P

But yeah, as you could see we post lots of news lately about programs and stuff, but I decided to ditch any possible award system in the future. I may eventually do a page for programs that made front page every month, but no oscar like awards, because in certain circumstances it can hurt people feelings, especially if their program they spend years on loses to one that got a few months of work in and are not finished. People vote for the program they prefer, but there is only one winner. Also it would suck to have like 20-30 programs featured but only 20-40 votes. I honestly feel that getting featured on the front page of a popular site and even in a list of notable programs are just great enough.

You are absolutely right in the feelings part DJ. Kerm wasn't very happy when he knew Axe won :(
