Title: I got a TI-81
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 17, 2008, 08:05:23 pm
see title. 2400 bytes of RAM, 3 matrices with 6x6 max size allowed, no While/repeat/for( so you must use Lbl/Gotos for loops about half the speed of a TI-82/83/+ and 3x the speed of a TI-80. Came with the instruction manual today from Ebay. I must tell you, TI didn't changed much, because the manual layout is almost the same than the TI-83+ one XD

The only annoying this is that to quit the program editor you must hit 2nd+CLEAR and there are no memory menu, as real vars and matrices won't take any RAM, meaning it immediately asks you if you want to reset the calc so it's a bit scary

I find this calc to look a bit better than the old TI-82 for some reason

cool, why did you buy a ti 81 though? Collection purposes?

Yeah. Since I don't have a lot of money atm I am starting with the oldest calculator models though. TI-85 is next, unless I find another model for extremly cheap

Picture of my current calcs and manuals (I also have another SE quick start guide which looks the same as the SE one in the pic, but it's in french)
(http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/calculators.jpg)

As for calculator models:
TI-81->1990
TI-85->1992
TI-82->1993
TI-80->1995
TI-92->1995
TI-83->1996
TI-86->1997
TI-89->1998
TI-92 Plus->1998
TI-73->1999
TI-83 Plus->1999
TI-83 Plus Silver Edition->2001
TI-73 Explorer->2002
Voyage 200->2002
TI-82 STATS->2004
TI-84 Plus->2004
TI-84 Plus Silver Edition->2004
TI-89Tit->2004
TI-82 Stats.fr->2005
TI-Nspire->2007
TI-Nspire CAS->2007
TI-83 Plus.fr->2008

As for models succession/replacments it would be something like this:
TI-81->TI-82->TI-83->TI-83+->TI-84+
TI-82 STATS->TI-82 Stats.fr
TI-83 Plus.fr
TI-83+SE->TI-84+SE
TI-80->TI-73->TI-73 Explorer
TI-85->TI-86->TI-89->TI-89t
TI-92->TI-92+->Voyage 200
TI-Nspire
TI-Nspire CAS
Correct me if I am wrong. TI-82 STATS series replaced the TI-82 in france, which were sold until much later than in other countries. It's a TI-82 with all TI-83 functionality and a CATALOG. Basically you get the TI-82 keypad and RAM but with TI-83 functionalities. It's supposed to run 82 and 83 programs. TI-82 Stats.fr is a french version of the TI-82 STATS and TI-83+.fr is a french version of the TI-83+, but without the need of the Français APP, meaning if you speak french you save 16 KB of archive over the normal TI-83+. I have absolutely no clue what's the difference between the TI-73 and the TI-73 Explorer.

I should really post a pic of my collection, it doesn't quite rival either of yours and many of them don't work but its still quite a large collection. 7 calcs if I remember correctly.

did you guys buy all your calcs, i mean with your own money???
Title: Re: I got a TI-81
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 24, 2008, 06:49:40 pm
I stolen them.... j/k, I bought all of them. I got my first TI-83+ (the one with the old yellow Omnimaga logo) on July 2001, my 83+SE in late feb 2002 (exchanged in March 2002 as it broke), my 89 Titanium in March 2007, my Casio FX-9750G+ in May or June 2008 (at the time I was planning to move to the Casio community and port some of my games to this old model so the games are playable on a wider range of calcs), I got a second 83+ from my bro in exchange of my unused Nintendo DS in July I think and I just got my TI-81 no. The second 83+ was used and dated from Nov 2001  and the 81 was used too, altough Idk from when it dates from (it can be anywhere from 1990 to 1997)

My 84+se I got new, the-86 I got from a friend for $20, and my 83+se I got from eBay, and the rest I got from school since they have messed up lcd's or were just left in the lost and found for over a year.

Title: Re: I got a TI-81

I wonder if there is still even a HP calc community since http://www.hpcalc.org shutted down? I remember it was barely ever active and the only forums I could find is one on google groups and a french one that threatened to shut down due to hosting costs and lack of interest from the author, but now it seems pretty much dead. I guess I did a good thing by adding all good RPGs from there on Omnimaga years ago (altough I need to add them back again now), else maybe they would be gone forever

is it shut down? it gots lots of programs=)
Title: Re: I got a TI-81
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 29, 2008, 05:55:08 pm
Wait it just got back up now. I was sure it was gone because during the entire spring and summer I would get a server not found error instantly when connecting (meaning the site was deleted, host shutted down or domain name expired) and in the past month it would never load at all. I guess they got hacked or their host banned my ISP for a while (this happened with the Casiocalc.org personal site hosting service twice).

oh lol, i don't have an hp calc, but their programs look great! Is hp programming anything like ti-basic/assembly?
Title: Re: I got a TI-81
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 30, 2008, 11:20:37 pm
If I remember there was a built in language on calc but Idk what it was and there was ARM assembly too and I think RPN or RPL
Title: Re: I got a TI-81
Post by: TIfanx1999 on November 03, 2008, 12:00:06 am
They also have a type of BASIC built in. ARM ASM is supported only by breaking out of the emulation mode. Since the hp programmers didnt want to do a complete rewrite of the os the calculators run in a low speed emulation mode which runs the same OS that has been around for sometime. Saturn ASM programs can be written and run in this mode.

lol indeed. Back in feb 2003 I decided to stick some paper piece on the calc logo and drew both 2002 and 2003 Omnimaga logos on it XD. Too bad the link port stopped working in 2004

On a side note I just got my TI-85 now and it's the 1992 edition (my 81 was the 1990 edition). Awesome calc. Now I need to wait until my 73 (not Explorer), 80, 82 and 83 :P

Some of us TI fans get them for collection purpose :P

I am starting to do the same but only with models that can be found for cheap on Ebay. I will be lucky if I get a Voyage or Nspire soon. Plus, I am thinking of mostly getting the older models for now anyway. Idk if I will expand to Casio but I'm sure trying to get a Casio FX-7000G for now. Heck, it would be hilarous if I managed to do a game for it XD.

There's a missing manual there. I got 2 83+ manuals. The one shown is in english but the other one was in french. My bro must have it somewhere. I also got a serial link cable and USB cable as well as a casio and TI calc to calc cable but they aren't shown either

In a few weeks I will have just one calc less than tifreak8x :P

As for now (warning huge pic):

http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/calcs3.jpg

4 of them are Casios right now though and there's 2 more coming. I kinda like that color screen calc at the bottom. Altough you can't really manipulate the colors how you would like inside programs you can do it fine inside pictures (altough pics takes 4096 bytes of RAM each) and there are some tricks to display certain colors anywhere due to the way the LCD was made.

Art_Of_camelot, I would say slightly inferior to the TI-82, same would go for the FX-9750G. CFX-9850G is slightly better than 9750G because despite not having financial functions, it has color and 4 KB more RAM. However both models are inferior to the TI-82/83 because they are slower, both processor-wise and BASIC-wise and the calc hardware needs to be modified I think to support ASM, unless I am wrong. Seeing how only one person ever released ASM programs for the CFX-9850G I guess it is true. I would need to confirm this on casio forums, though.

As for the Algebra FX 1.0 and 2.0, they are superior to the TI-83+ but by far inferior to the TI-83+SE. It has around 700 KB of flash memory, ASM support and I think C too. It also have better LCD than these TI models, given that most ASM games are grayscale. However something makes them by far worse than the SE and would make them worse than the regular 83+ too if it wasn't for the large amount of flash memory: First, the BASIC language on them is slow and I even heard that it was slower than the color models. Secondly, the Flash memory on these calcs has a short lifetime. I believe it's the same flash memory than on the recent TI models. On TI models after about 200000 flash memory rewrites (Garbage Collect/Defragmenting), it stops working, which means if heavily used a 83+ calc would last about 20 years. However the AFX flash memory apparently lasts about 3 years if it is heavily used so the calc stops working afterward. Idk if it's true and if it's just caused by some calcs flash memory being defect, I got this info from Wikipedia and another site about all casio models.

The Classpad is the TI-Nspire of the Casio calcs, but better. Like TI, when it came out it had no ASM support, only BASIC. However it is better because it has a touchscreen, even if no native grayscale support, the BASIC language is MUCH more efficient than the Nspire, even though it's a typical calc BASIC language as you know it, and unlike TI, they quickly responded to the complaints by releasing a C compiler and allowing ASM programs to be run on the classpad by releasing new OSes. However one downside is that the latest OS is very buggy and Casio hasn't addressed the current bugs involving wrong calculations. I would say it's much better than the Nspire in its current state, even if much less RAM, but it is not as good as a Voyage 200.

The Casio FX-9860G is their most recent calcs. It's the best of all Casios. It is much better than the TI-86 in term of processor speed (altough I didn't tried the BASIC language to see if it's much faster than older calcs), it has 32 KB less user RAM, but one model has 700+ KB of Flash memory and the two others has 1.5 MB. It also has more features than the 9750G/CFX models and looks similar. Also like the TI-89 the Insert mode while typing stuff is enabled by default so it makes the shitty Casio PRGM editor easier to use. One of the 3 models (idk if it's still in production though) has SD card support and another one looks like a pocket electronic dictionary and is easier to carry in your pocket.

To be honest TI calcs are easier to use though. Despite the Casio having a menu system similar to the TI-85/86 it is harder to find the functions you want and the PRGM editor is annoying to use because linebreaks are counted as tokens and anything you type overwrites them, meaning you accidentally erase code on the next line most of the time
