Do you think the ticalc.org 83+/84+ BASIC games sections are too cluttered, right now? :P

Once upon a time it was like that.

Cool! Why isn't it like that now, nut with a filtering option? That might be nice, I like to look at everything on one page as opposed to going back and forth... (then again, I am one of the last people that advice on organisation should be taken).
-
Because old computers and slow connections could barely load the page at all. I remember Firefox freezing completly while trying to load it. It was also impossible to find anything good among all the crappy stuff. A filter option would be nice, though, but I think categorizing the games by genre was a huge improvement compared to what it was.
-
Ah, got it. That makes sense. And yes, now that I think about it, there is probably so much garbage on the website that it would be irritating to search through.
-
Yeah, when I discovered about CTRL+F (search in page) in Firefox, I still could barely find anything and it took ages to scan through.
-
Only ONE quadratic solver! :o
I'll go back anytime.
-
It's because it's the games section. If you check archive.org for the math programs section that will be a different story.
Why is there a quadratic formula program listed there is beyong me. The fact there's one in the games section shows how bad the quadratic solver flooding was, though.
-
The horror...
-
The Ticalc rating system was supposed to be a kind of filter for the good and the bad. But it cannot be trusted because some people, unfortunately, rate great programs very low and some great programs never get rated at all.
-
Yeah, most BASIC games, even good ones, get rated 1-2, and there are people rating good programs 1 for no reason. Also a lot of stuff is unrated. I prefer reviews.
-
Ratings are pretty unused.
anyway, the horror of going through all those files... shock!
DJ, u did give me a sort of heart attack!
-
..to my surprise, I've never actually viewed the ticalc games section (or much of ticalc) since around 2006. I thought it was still that way. It's more of a shock to see it semi-organized.
-
Theres a TON of Windows clones made in basic there (in the basic shells section) too. None of them are particularly well made, and its hard to not run into one every other time you search for something.
Maybe the discontinuation of the z80 series will be a blessing of sorts, since only people who currently own one will have one, which will hopefully lead to a higher number of experienced coders.
-
Not really, because when the 83 was discontinued I still saw crappy programs being uploaded for the next 3 years or so with only a few good releases. The amount of good coders would remain proportional and the total amount of coders would diminish to the point where nobody cares about your projects anymore.
-
oh :'(
We're a dying breed i guess
-
PANIC
That must have taken a lot of work to organize into directories...
/me gives the file archivers some peanuts
-
that has got to be the most cluttered thing I've ever seen, :o
-
holy crap, that's a lot of games :o
my computer froze for 2 minutes there :(
-
Back in the day it was crazy over at ticalc. When the archivers started making categories it was a major help. And I agree on the ratings, it was a cool idea but got abused. People would downrate something because it wasnt as good as they thought it should be. When back then and now they dont realize how hard it was to get some of the awesome programs as good as they are.
-
Most programs are either overestimated or underestimated. Which is sad, most voters are people who can only program limited BASIC :(
That's what I've heard somewhere else at least...

Like the file reviewer for Wolfenstein who gave the graphics 5/10 because it didn't have greyscale...
-
yeah, that bastard... :(
grayscale in pure ASM is hard unless you really know what you're doing... and it really makes you have to slow down your game too!

Yep, axe has easy to manage grayscle, but doing grayscle in ASM that's not in Axe is pretty rough from my experiences :P
...and then there's Axe.
-
is it just me or did Deept Thought now post that?
-
Yeah...
Did you forget to put something in your post, ASHBAD? ;)
-
Ticalc should really have a subcategory for Axe. I always think there is a new ASM game and it turns out its for Axe. Which great but if I was looking for pure ASM source I'm stuck searching through all these Axe projects as well.
-

And now they have an entire section dedicated to quadratic solvers. :P
-
well, if you look there's only like 20 axe games on ticalc. But I agree, as in the next month it could be 50 as it picks up popularity.
@mride: and that's AWESOME so now I don't have to look at that crap anymore on the good BASIC pages :D

Definitely. In a few more months the ASM section's probably gonna get flooded too (especially Ion) :P

Not yet. In fact we are growing very fast. There was a major lull around 2007-08 but then with Axe Parser, more people got interested in 83+ programming, not to mention that Omnimaga growth and later Cemetech helped a lot.
If you go to the stats page, I think the graphics speak for themselves. Same for the amount of ticalc.org features.
-
Lol, I remember that time. (I got my calc in fall 2007) I remember I thought calc games were all worthless at the time because the only ones that I had tried were these terrible, random, poorly made games. Of course, over time, I found the good ones :)
-
Yeah I noticed you were around for quite a while actually. You had a lot of stuff in your profile as well. I think your stuff is from the time where Omnimaga shutted down or shortly before it revived.

X.X
Nail in my heart, aneurysm in my head...
(Not to mention my burning eyes)

I think he accidentally his text inside the quote :P

Yeah it was. I also remember when about 20-30 files got added every 3 days or so. Now this trend seems to be coming back, but everything is categorized better. As for ratings, an example of how much they are abused: TI-Boy SE is rated around 7. I am sure of the reasons why:
-People don't read the readme and try the program on their missing RAM pages 84+. They see it doesn't work and think it's the program that is a hoax. 1/10 rating out of frustration.
-People expect a perfect GB emu running at 100% speed. They don't think about the fact it's just a calculator. In response to this, they rate the program 1/10.
-People have troubles converting ROMs. Instead of asking help, they simply give the program 1/10 rating, with the excuse that it doesn't work at all.

ROFL

And the review system kind of gets abused too, though not as badly. Like that one review that trashed DoorsCS
-
i clicked that link(well actually, copied and pasted into a new tab) and my first reaction was, this isnt all that bad. dunno what everyone is getting so worked up about.
then i noticed that, though i was still scrolling down, the scroll bar wasn't getting any closer to the bottom, just getting smaller :P

Or that Mario game that gets lots of downloads but isn't even close to being Mario. For a while, the author kept updating the file so it shows on front page, even when there were no updates.i clicked that link(well actually, copied and pasted into a new tab) and my first reaction was, this isnt all that bad. dunno what everyone is getting so worked up about.

Yeah that's what happened to me too. I think I remember on a Mac computer it did not always finish loading completly either.
-
Ah, I remember it like that. It was only like that for a short amount of time for me though. :)
-
I didn't get a heart attack, but it reminded me of my flash drive :P
Or my room
-
Lol... that reminds me I should clean mine :P . 4 of my 19 graphing calculators are at random places.
EDIT: Hmm I think it was 20, I'm not sure anymore, lol...
