Title: Interesting way to make calculator movies?
Post by: Insorak on December 22, 2009, 02:14:03 pm
If you have a really long string that you recall on the homescreen, it scrolls a lot, blending the characters in what looks like animation. I've done this with repeating strings, and it's just occurred to me that you can probably make pretty neat, and even grayscale, movies with it. Of course, any movie of decent length would require a ridiculously long string, but still - it's cool!

Anyone want to try? :P

I've done that so many times.  One of my favorites is (plot dot)(plot square)o(plot square)(plot dot)(space) and another is LLLLLLLLLLLLLL_   . Just type a quote, then Ans+Ans and press enter untill an Error Memory.  Then Rcl Ans.

Or is you're feeling evil, do it with the GarbageCollect token.  That will make it last for about 5 minutes. ;D

Actually some friends tried this before me. :P

Some simple animations could be cool. But don't waste on making a movie unless you really have time to waste.

true, unless you plan to use it in game, but it can end up very large in memory

Yeah, for games it would be kind of exessive unless you can exploit some sort of repeating image or something.  But it would be a very interesting way to create animation.

Illusiat 9, 13, ROL1 and 2 kinda does that to a certain extent, for certain magic spells, altough it really is simple strings of characters of like 3 lines.

Illusiat 6 also has a scrolling village animation in the intro

on the topic of calculator movies, the easiest way to do tool-assisted speedruns of calculator games is currently using a TI-83 Plus ROM with wabbitemu and having gif/video capture always ON. Save state-ing can be a chore due to the lack of a quick save/load hotkey in Wabbitemu. Once the speedrun is captured, use a video editor like Virtual Dub to edit out every unnecessary frames where you are pressing no keys (which is only possible if nothing's moving on the screen and easier with games using Pause commands, though) then double the video speed and save. Once done, reload your video in virtual dub and convert the framerate to 30 FPS then save

The rule is to not abuse save data hacking (like through the list editor). The only thing that can be abused (that was not intended to be by the author) is game glitches.

Example: Drug Cartel TAS in 2.75 seconds:
