Title: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Madskillz on March 01, 2011, 09:16:40 pm
Hey Omnimaga crew,

UTI, MC and Revolution Software have teamed up for a Spring coding competition.
A poll is up at UTI for the people interested in participating or just those that are wanting cool projects.
Let your voice be heard for a contest for you.
Here's the link:
http://www.unitedti.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9675&pid=143558&st=0&#entry143558 (http://www.unitedti.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9675&pid=143558&st=0&#entry143558)

We'll keep you posted here, revsoft, and UTI as well.

Sure I'll go and post more there, but I'll post it here first.

The contest is going to go from March 7th until June 6th.
Contestants are allowed one entry for the contest, but can enter at any time before June 1st.

There will be rules posted as well as some prize info on Monday.

Nice. Hopefully this sparks some interest. Omni contest starts around mid may, but the first portion will not cover BASIC/ASM, so hopefully this shouldn't cause the participation to go down.

I'll go vote on the UTI poll later.

@ruler501:Although I can't say for sure (as I'm not involved in organizing the contest)there usually is no age restriction on entries to these sorts of contests. The only complications that could potentially arise are in prize distribution, depending on if physical prizes are offered or not.
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Madskillz on March 02, 2011, 06:34:12 pm
Actually there is an age restriction...but I think pretty much everybody here is safe. The contest is only open to people 25 and under. We wanted a contest where a student or a person of student age could participate and get a useful prize.

I would participate if it was BASIC
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Xeda112358 on March 02, 2011, 06:42:41 pm
I'm pretty sure BASIC is going to be a programming category :D
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Deep Toaster on March 02, 2011, 06:43:59 pm
Yep, BASIC will almost definitely be a language.

No...! No RPG in da poll? D:
*RPG is Yeong's speciality

Lol, that sounds like a great idea :D

RPGs require a lot of work, though, and might discourage other programmers from joining :P
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Yeong on March 02, 2011, 07:01:27 pm
I wanna do either RPG or TCG thingy if TCG means trading card game thingy.
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 02, 2011, 07:02:03 pm
Yeah I agree with Xeda. It would have to be a short RPG, but not many people like tiny RPGs so maybe not a lot of people would participate.
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Xeda112358 on March 02, 2011, 07:04:24 pm
I personally want to see a TCG come of this (and yes, TCG=Trading Card Game). You can definitely make an RPGish TCG, too! That would be really cool!
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition

Like Magi-Nation?(This game was horrible but...)

It's an old gbc games so I don't think anyone will be familiar with it X)
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Xeda112358 on March 02, 2011, 07:10:53 pm
I remember there was an old Yu-gi-oh game for the GBC... So maybe something like that?
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Yeong on March 02, 2011, 07:13:36 pm
Well, i've never played YuGioh in gbc before, but Magi-nation works by walking around and encountering enemies, but the battle itself is a card battle XJ
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Xeda112358 on March 02, 2011, 07:18:40 pm
Yes, like that! That would be cool on a calc! Especially if you create your own card game... I've been meaning to turn the two card games I created into games on the calc :D I made an RPG of it, but I think I would like the card game more on the calc :D
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 02, 2011, 07:20:08 pm
Yu-Gi Oh would be hard with like 1200 cards to code in, though. O.O

It haz that much card? O.O

If I do, imma make something new, so I think i'll be fine.
(gotta play Pokemon TCG to review how it worked XD )

I said TCG too, cause a TCG sounds cool, especially if it's anything like the Pokemon TCG game for the Gameboy.

/me feels old all of a sudden O.O

Actually it was a very good idea, the implementation just wasn't the best. I thought it was decent, and the graphics were quite good for gameboy color.

Well a lot of the staff at UTI, MC and RS are over or pretty close to that age. However don't let the age restriction stop anyone. The other prizes are good too.

Now I'm confused. Do you mean only people under the age limit are eligible for physical prizes but anyone can enter? Perhaps I should wait until details are posted, I'm guessing you don't want to spoil anything. =)

is python/C/C++ going to be one of the languages. I'd prefer python.
What kind of prizes are there(ruler sees dreams of great TCG with big prizes)

Can we do a port of a game, as long as we use new code and there hasn't been a port of the game previously?
If so, I know what I'm gonna do, providing TCG wins (and it looks like it might).

Probably Pokemon TCG or Yu gi-ohs?  :P

Probably Pokemon TCG or Yu gi-ohs?  :P
Sssssh.
And yeah, I was thinking the Pokemon TCG, because it's a great game, plus it actually explains the rules well. I never understood the rules to the game before, but after playing the game I understood them. Still doesn't make me a good player, though...

Yeah, as Madskillz said here (http://www.unitedti.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9675&view=findpost&p=143578), if you're submitting a non-original program, it has to be a rewrite :)

And these programs are generally timed (so people don't just submit the same program year after year to every single contest), so you might have some trouble looking for a contest that accepts programs already made.

Yeah RPG would be tough to do in 3 months.

So is this a computer/calc or just a calc programming contest?(If calc can I do an Nspire one)
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition

It is a calc contest. Unfortunately I dont think any of the staff have an Nspire to test an entry on.

Yeah I think this will be 83+/84+-only, because two of the site the contest is ran by (MaxCoderz and Revsoft) are pretty much just 83+ sites.

wait, so is this separated into different programming languages? as in, Axe programs gets voted separate from BASIC programs, etc.?
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: yunhua98 on March 04, 2011, 05:38:03 pm
For Pokemon, it'd be cool to have an Appvar with all the card data, and when new cards come out, you could just post an updated Appvar, or people could trade appvars to get different cards.  Is this game allowed to be multiplayer?  Although I don't know if I'll enter yet...
Title: Re: Joint Spring Coding Competition
Post by: Madskillz on March 04, 2011, 06:37:19 pm
I wouldn't be giving to many ideas out there on your possible entries. You are gonna want something that sets yours apart remember.  ;)

As for the languages being judged separately, as of now I don't think so. I think we are going to lump all entries together. But that could change by Monday.

The joint programming competition starts today. The contest will run until June 6th. The judges will be representatives from United-TI, Revolution Software and Maxcoderz. If you would like to enter into the contest, you may create a topic in the Programming Competitions section of the United-TI forums. The rules and scoring rubric will be posted on March 11th. As well as some information regarding the prizes. If anyone has any questions you can post them here or send any one of the United-TI staff, Revolution Software staff or Maxcoderz staff a private message.

All participants in the contest must create a trading card type of game.
We would recommend holding off on programming anything until the scoring rubric/rules are posted on the 11th.

All parties want to thank all the people who voted in the contest poll.
We are all committed to making this an excellent competition with excellent prizes!

Thanks again and good luck,
-Madskillz

Sorry I didn't get it posted this morning, but here it is.

Maxcoderz and Revolution Software are the ones fronting the first place prize and we will be putting up a brand new TI-Nspire CX. I know it isn't out yet, but it should be out before the contest ends.

So keep working on those entries. A big first place prizes needs a big first place winner!
