Nspire CAS+: how worth is it?

Well, I was just looking at some google pages ...
and saw at least 3 Nspire CAS+ for sell in some sites [including ebay]

I know it isn't upgradable [in theory] to the new OSes

but, it still much cheaper than almost every other calculator with similar functions such as taylor() among others.

So my question is: Is it worth to pay 170 BRL =~[100 USD] =~ [80 euros] for it?

It would be for college study.

And another question, but this I think will not be easy to reply as only someone with it could try ...
How 'impossible' is to upgrade it's OS?

If it's just for math, it should do. You could also look at hp calcs, i think those also include a cas. As for os upgrades, you would probably need a NAND programmer, unless there is a way to download stuff over rs232. You may or may not have to factor the rsa key, because the os was never intended to be upgraded.

If you just want to do math, get an HP and learn RPN, as well as HFAA.

fb39ca4, yes it's just for Math/Calculus as for playing/programming I have my nspire clickpad ...
and the upgrade was just a thought, because they appear to be quite similar for me, as the most functions are the same in both.

Well i know some RPN, but I couldn't understand what does HFAA stands for as google said:
"Hardanger Fiddle Association of America" among others weirds results.

Also, I don't really like hp50g, i wish there was some ti 89 titanium+ ...

sorry guys, but wat's a CAS+ ??? here in France, we've got only regular Nspires and Nspire CAS, but no Nspire CAS+ 8|

It's the TI-Nspire prototype. It's not available in retail stores, only on places like eBay

The Nspire CAS+ prototype has been widely tested in France in 2006-2007 school year.
We've regularly mentionned it since on www.TI-Bank.fr .

And as you were told here, the CAS is far better than the CAS+.

The CAS isn't even sold over here. O.O

Also people be careful when buying Nspires on Ebay. Do not get a + unless you only need it for math, your teacher doesn't mind if you don't use the latest OS and that you don't plan to use it for 3rd party development. Also, check the picture on Ebay to make sure it's really a CAS you're buying, not a CAS+. Some people may try to pass CAS+ calcs as CAS to fool buyers.

Since you have a clickpad nspire, you don't have anything to lose getting the cas+. Plus, it's nice to have two calcs, one for school and one for home.

with the cas+, keep in mind that there would be hardly any, or not at all any support for the model since it is a prototype pre-release model.

I won't get any support neither for my calc as TI hardly reply any e-mail [my only support is here and other forums]
and isn't easy to find any retail store about calcs [except hp] down here...

[It doesn't matter for my teachers which calculator I am using, and they don't provide us any app/document for calc]

Ah ok, I guess you should be fine, then. The only issue with the CAS+ is that it has no programming capabilities at all, like OS 1.1, so if you want math programs then you can't use that calc at school.

I'd prefer to keep the Nspire CAS I will have for Christmas ;) if I do not persuade my stepfather to not buy me a new calc, I'll keep the Nspire at home, but I already persuaded him that I'll be fine, so :/

But, if it's less interesting than regular and CAS Nspires, why is it called CAS+ ?!

No clue why, I guess the + was added to differentiate those calcs from the official ones and they didn't want to release the CAS+ and make people wonder where is the CAS. Some people sometimes ask if there was ever a TI-84 regular before the 84+.

ALso I'm glad you're getting a new calc soon. YOu're still gonna be able to work on SimpleCS, right? Because the CAS has no 84+ emulation...
