Title: Nspire Color prototype sold in China
Post by: northern_snow on November 21, 2012, 08:34:51 am
I found an NSpire Color sold at 450 yuan here.
http://cncalc.org/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=8094
Interesting... I want to buy one~ Any idea?
And I want to ask Critor if the prototype one can install ndless?

Unless the Nspire Color prototype is running OS 3.1.0.392 (certainly signed with the prototype keys), nope.

OHHHH NOOOOOO that's an OS. 3.0 one...
So, what can i do with a CX prototype? Playing Lua games only? Or maybe it is possible to mod the prototype, just like what has been done on a clickpad one?

You can do less in the way of useful stuff than with production models.

Playing Lua games only?
If the outdated OS version it contains supports Lua, the implemented Lua is compatible with what TI provided in OS 3.0.1, and the document format is the same... maybe.

Unlike Clickpad Nspires, Touchpad, CX and CM Nspires do not have an external NOR Flash chip, which can be either directly reprogrammed (on prototypes) or reprogrammed after minor, easy hardware modification (production models), in such a way that all Clickpad Nspires (not just prototypes) can run arbitrary boot1, boot2 and OS.
Modding Touchpad and later Nspires is therefore very much harder than modding Clickpads.

Do you have the exact version number?

You won't be able to install production OS 3.1.0 and won't be able to install Ndless 3.1.

But, you'll be able to install development OS 3.1 which might have the same exploit - Ndless could be ported to thoses OSes. Note that I don't have any 3.1 development build.

The same exploit used with OS 3.0.1 to dump the Boot1 is present in OS 3.0.0.
It might be used to port Ndless - interest in this exploit dropped allmost immediately as it was fixed in OS 3.0.2.

Although I haven't had the time to news about it, unlike production CX/CM my Nspire Color prototype has an external Flash NOR chip.
But it's a completely different chip than the ClickPad one.

So I don't know if it is flashable, and if it is it will require a specific asm program.

If you buy it, I'll be interested into sharing some dumping tools with you ;)

I'd be interested in it, too, if you decided you didnt want it and there were some way to program it (in assembly). Northern_snow: where did you get 350元 from? It looks like it's 450元.

I didn't know there were any Chinese calculator forums :D

EDIT: Btw, who's zhengran14? Is it someone from here?

Oh yes it's 450 yuan. And zhengran14 is just a junior high school student in shanghai.
OS 3.0.0.1045
Boot 1 & Boot 2 3.0.0

Mine has OS 3.0.0.0.

So 3.0.0.1045 is very interesting.
Who buys it? ;)

Ah ok, they seem to know quite a bit (talking about WabbitEmu, Axe, etc.)

Who buys it? ;)
That's up to northern_snow ;) I don't need it but it's definitely tempting.

OK I'll buy it.
(But I have another idea. Critor, I want to send this model to you and you send a production model to me, and I pay the shipping cost.)

Nice idea - no problem :D
I'll pay the shipping cost for the production CX myself, don't worry about that.

OK. Finally I bought it at 400 yuan. It may arrive 3 or 4 days later, then I will send it to critor via DHL.
Btw, it seems like chickendude is a Chinese. Then you really should come to the Chinese calc forum cncalc.org.  Not many people do program, especially for Nspire(C/ASM). My ID is 朔雪X忆, and 朔雪 exactly means northern snow ;-)

The good thing is that maybe in a year or two, Critor and others will figure out how to put Ndless on prototypes. The problem, though, is that most games are made for Ndless 3.1, so I doubt many programs will run on it. Plus Ndless on prototypes must not be taken for granted, as this takes time and work to even get it to run on one OS, and could take years, if not forever, before it arrives on your OS.

Critor, the NSpire Color has been arrived... And it's so unstable, usually showing a blue half screen of error information... And it's really slow...

Did they send you a broken calculator or did TI rush out that prototype?

If it's a software bug, I can probably deal with it.
No problem for me: you can still send it to me and you'll get your non-CAS CX in exchange :)

But could you show us a photo of the error information blue screen?

Thanks.

That's great! I decide to send it via UPS. And I just want to wait for the PLT-SHH and send the two together to reduce the shipping cost, for the price of express is so high.

No problem, I will post photos and details this weekend.

No problem indeed, it will save money for everyone :)

And maybe Critor will find some kind of working battery ( or at least energy source :P).
We should ask Datamath, though, about that. Maybe he has a spare one ?

I doubt I can do anything...

Plugging an external power source would be possible but can be quite dangerous if we're not sure of the pins and specifications.

The easier way will probably be to ask your contacts at TI-Dallas to check if they've got something like that in their drawers.

TERRIBLE News:
I opened the NSpire Color, and suddenly I realized why it is unstable.
The plastic socket joined the main board and the screen board cracked :(
And now because I opened it and the socket came off, I can hardly turn it on.
So what should I do now? Do you still want it critor?
Title: Re: Nspire Color prototype sold in China
Post by: critor on November 29, 2012, 03:47:46 am
Which part of the socket did break? The part on the screen PCB which is hosting NAND and NOR chips? Or the part on the keyboard/battery PCB?

If the screen PCB is intact, I just have to swap it with another non-CAS TI-Nspire CX and I should be able to dump Boot1/Boot2/Diags/OS.

Could you show us a photo of both PCB and of the sockets?

Can you still turn it on? While there is still a way to turn it on for some minutes, I can still do something with it.

While it's still possible to do something with it, yes I'd still like to receive it :)

Here is a photo to show where it is.

Thank you for your reply :)

Attachement failed, so here is the photo:
http://tiplanet.org/forum/gallery/image.php?mode=medium&album_id=63&image_id=1228

The socket is interposed between both PCB, between the two apparent screws.

So what is cracked? The top PCB?

If it's still working, and if you have another non-CAS TI-Nspire CX running Ndless 3.1, I can send you a tool to dump the OS.
Boot1/Boot2/Diags dumping will require an RS232 interface though.

But yes, I'd still like to receive it :)

How does one make such an interface? Using a max232 and a docking connector?

An USB/TTL based interfaced will be much easier, as powered through the computer USB.
