Title: Obscure, Yet Great Games
Post by: ztrumpet on August 04, 2010, 12:42:03 pm
I've noticed how there are a lot of fun games out there, but they are so obscure that very few people seem to notice them.  This is a thread to mention some games that you like, but not many people know about.  I'll start with three fun, but semi-obscure games. :)

Paper Plane - A wonderful game in which you fly your plane towards the ground, hoping to avoid the obstructions.
http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/341/34139.html

Sky - Another fun game, in which you must walk on all the tiles to advance to the next level.
http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/378/37816.html

Rattle Snake - One of my favorite snake games of all time.  It has a Campaign Mode that is wonderful.

Alright, so, what are some other obscure gems? ;D

While it's hardly a "great" game, I was impressed by the definitely-obscure CBR Pong (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/362/36237.html). I kind of liked the idea of using a CBR or other external sensing device as part of a game.

The fact that it's totally useless, since I would imagine very few people have a CBR, makes it less impressive though.

Okay, maybe it's not a game, but...

...I found this program yesterday and it's pretty useful. :)

I'm sure there's more games out there.  Who'll post 'em? ;D

My favorite Pong game for the 89 is Aaron Miller's (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/396/39640.html), which I think is reasonably obscure but it's definitely pretty good. I'm reluctant to try games made before 2004 on my Titanium (even with Hw3 Patch), and out of the remaining I'd say this is the best. It is simply Pong, not Pong with fancy features. If you want Pong with fancy features, play something else.

It's typical for Final Fantasy clones to suck on ticalc.org, because people try to get more downloads by using popular names even if their program has not much work put in. Final Fantasy Alternative on the TI-89 is an exception, by far. FFVII: Cloud Quest is quite good, too. On the 83+, Nate Fouts Final Fantasy v 1.198 is one nice clone too, despite its flaws.

Same thing goes with Zelda. Besides Zelda: Dark Link Quest and Zelda: The Hero of Hyrule, there are no finished Zelda games for calculators that are really Zelda action-adventure gameplay. I cannot say much about the first, because I would be biased but if you don't mind ridiculous amount of sub-programs and massive file size due to dated libs, you may like it. Otherwise, if you speak French, Hero of Hyrule is the only ARPGCS that is actually good.

Well it is still a bit underrated as not a lot of people refer to it when we talk about ASM RPGs. I guess it might be due to the bugs.

Interesting, I'll have to try this out at one point.

Hmm that one seems kinda slow, though. I guess it could maybe be very enjoyable on a 84+

Post by: patriotsfan on August 26, 2010, 08:50:49 pm
Yeah, it's slow but still playable. Kind of hard also because the ball can get stuck in a wall time to time.

Aah I see. I guess I'll try it anyway later.

EDIT: Something that would have been good would be to review underrated games we find to be good and give them a rating, but ticalc.org rarely processes reviews anymore :(

It was featured on ticalc, I think.  It is quite a fun game.

Gah I quoted the wrong post again x.x. My bad. I meant to quote http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/378/37822.html .

Invalid Tangram DE was indeed featured. Nice game too.

I never tried that one. I was afraid it would be a bit too simple despite the 3D or choppy framerate. Is it the case?

Also there's Glasscars that was quite fun, although it seemed a bit glitchy and hard to control at times. http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/126/12690.html

I don't know.  It had a good review...   I tried it once, and don't remember if I liked it or not\

EDIT: It's actually decent.  Certainly the best coaster game I've seen for an 83+

Well the gameplay is a bit strange but I like it, it's like a RPG-TBS.

I remember that. I think it was featured on the old Omnimaga website, but I don't remember if it's in the downloads section or not. It was the first 83+ ASM RPG in a while back then.

On request from zTrumpet, here are the games on my calc:

Airplane (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/341/34139.html) - already mentioned
Bubble (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/429/42953.html) - Bubble Breaker, like the app for windows phones
Cave (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/290/29069.html) - Cave, don't touch the bottom, top, or the boulders
Imposble (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/430/43047.html) - The Impossible Game, My best game, super addictive
Mario (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/174/17452.html) - Mario, you've all seen it, this is just for nonmembers who find this list
Megaball (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/383/38303.html) - Mega Ball, this is the best paddle and ball game I've seen. I attached a hacked version that allows saving and another power up. I won't put it on ticalc though because the original author even had the file encrypted 0.0
Missile (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/429/42901.html) - The Missile Game 3d, you're a missile, fly through the holes in the walls
Orbit (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/429/42902.html) - Orbit, there are these balls orbiting you and you have to get to the square
Phoenix (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/148/14876.html) - Phoenix, same with Mario, the best galaga type shooter
Progresn (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/429/42903.html) - Progression, ok so I figured out how to make tunnel games really fast, I like it better than fTun, but its not great
Tank (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/414/41412.html) - Indestructo Tank, You're an indestructible tank, bounce off of the bullets and helicopters
TetrisM (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/429/42905.html) - Tetris Marathon, grayscale and better than zTris (at least I think so)
Unclewrm (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/96/9676.html) - Uncle Worm, well known, but still a great snake game
zKart (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/95/9546.html) - zKart, another tunnel type game, it's a lot more fun when you receive it with a 1824 highscore on it

Wow, that took a while, hopefully this will hope some poor kid someday.

Edit by ZTrumpet to replace wrong links in Bubble and ZKart. :)

Here's Fishy by Iambian (as geekboy mentioned), with source included. http://ourl.ca/4822  I was lucky enough to get this off UTI around 18 months ago; I've had it one my calc ever since. ;D

Thanks ThePenguin!  I'm going to try those games that I've never had, which is surprisingly a lot. ;D

Edit: Everyone needs this game on their calc: http://ourl.ca/6173

Lots of those are awesome! Also I remember that Bomberman clone, it was amazing for basic. :)

Btw, sad fact about the Paper Plane game mentionned above: it was started by Deus Makina 2010 somewhere in 2002 or 2003, who was friend with another french guy, Pacha, who was part of the TIFT back in the days, but Deus commited suicide in September 2003 and Pacha promised himself that he would finish the game in memory of his friend. The original forum about this suffered data loss during its move on yAronet so the topic is gone, but there are some news available, like here http://www.ti83plus.online.fr/news.php?id=218

Indeed there are lots of great games that due to lack of advertisement never get featured and sometimes their titles are not attractive and people don't download them.

Great find, though.

Hmm this seems mostly like a maze. Is there any sort of twist? Is it actually a platformer?
Title: Re: Obscure, Yet Great Games

It's hard to explain.  Basically, there are 6 levels that are completely different.  You have to beat them all in order to beat the game.  I wouldn't call it a platformer, but there are some levels that are like platforming. :)

AH ok, I just wondered how the game was played, because to me, all it seems to be is just another home screen maze with nothing special added. THis is why I've been wondering about the features added.

Talking about mazes, that one seems kinda cool too, since it has scrolling: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/434/43403.html

Kalan_vod made one several years ago, though.
