Title: People react to your calculator...
Post by: Roboman on December 20, 2012, 06:07:59 pm
So, a few times in class/on the bus, people look over and say
"Wut you doing on dat clakalatr?"/me says "Just playin some portal"
He says "WUT?!?!? IT CANS DO DAT?"
 ::)
and one time somebody refused to believe I created a simple BASIC game.  He insisted I downloaded it from the internet.
Share you'r stories of people reacting to the 'odd' things happening on you'r calculator screen.  Things said people deem...
IMPOSSIBLE

My math teacher (who is quite technologically-oriented and uses graphing calcs (although not as much as I or any of us do)) was amazed when I showed him how to blow out a TI-83/84/+/SE screen using ASM and what it looks like.

Blow out?  I don't know what that means.

I find it awesome when somebody brags about a BASIC density calculator or similar program, and then I say “Oh yeah, I remember programming on the 83, though I programmed tron on mine”
I plugged a keyboard into my calculator with linucx and typed dmesg, and my friend thought I was awesome

There is not a single person who hasn't asked me if my CX has wifi.

Also, my social studies teacher told me to make a time machine on my calculator earlier today :P

By blow out he probably meant what happens if you make your calculator BSOD for too long.

Just let me know before it goes off okay
:P

Not many people really saw my CX b/c I got it like a week before I graduated and college people are just meh XD
One of the security guards at my old high school took like a while to figure out that the Prizm wasn't a phone tho. What kind of a phone has 50 buttons and a clip-on case? 0.o

Essence betas, the Tio menu and messing with zStart's picture thing got some fun reactions in their days tho.

Lol, last year I was programming on my Nspire in my lap during school, and somebody asked me who I was texting.
Also, a few years ago when phone’s were still illegal in our school and I carried around my four function calculator, people thought it was a blackberry or other phone and thought I should put it away so I don’t get caught

Hm, now I'm wondering what would happen if someone were to take a TI-108 and stick, say, an apple logo on the back.  Should be interesting.

"It's a prototype"

Someone at school back in 2001 was absolutely shocked and amazed at the "incredible" graphics of Illusiat 2.

I can't imagine what would have been his reaction if he saw Reuben Quest... O.O

Sadly the game was not finished when I was still in school. I started it after ending school. :P When I finished hi school I was halfway into ROL2 development and when I was in hi school, I was working on ROL3, Zelda DLQ and ROL4ever (cancelled)

Here are their reactions in the order when they try using my 84+SE (the one they should never touch :P):

Hey, what's that rabbit showing when I turn it on ? (thanks zStart for the 8 lvl greyscale pic at startup)
Why does it display 8.41 pm even though it is 10.54 am ? (thanks zStart for launching my program at startup but a RAM Clear killed the time)
Crap, what's the password ? (next step of the program at startup :P)
Lol, why is your cursor like that ? (thanks zStart for allowing custom fonts and thanks Spyro for the amazing font)

Then they try launching some progs and they no longer want to give me back my calc :P

the biggest reaction i've ever gotten was from plugging a pair of headphones into my 84+, with second place taken by making a chat program and talking to someone across the room via a link cable spliced to christmas lights :P

By the way this topic title should probably be edited, because it's your, not you'r (nor you're, the more common grammar/spelling mistake). ;)

Don't want to ruin my only transfer cable though.

People always joke about the fact that I would be able to put PDF in my TI-Nspire CX. Where they get stunned is when I answer them that in fact, yes, it is possible.

Oh, this was so funny, and it was even before I downloaded anything special for my calculator.
I had the startup app display a picture with “I am awesome” on it in cursive and other fonts.
I forgot all about that and gave it to my Statistics teacher to put an app on, and he turned it on and said “Oh, well that’s true”

Yay! ;D

I put an Apple sticker (the kind you get with an iPod) on the slide case of my TI-Nspire and people ask me if I have an Apple calculator. Lolz. I can usually amaze the school jocks (the kind who don't know how to turn on a computer) pretty easily by writing programs to instantly solve their algebra homework.

When I connected earphones to a calc and played some games with sound, some people came standing around me and they first thought I just pretended it could do sound. Then I let them listen to it themselves and then they walked away with blown minds.

Also when I was playing portal on my calc after an exam, some guys from my class asked me: "WTF is that portal?!"

Then I told them I was making music for a game and they were still mind blown...

Did that too in highschool. I was writing my chiptune tracker at the time.

Convert them to a pic and open them with mViewer.

Sometimes when people notice me typing into my calculator, they come over and look at the screen...  which gets more people to notice me... which gets a small mob around me... which gets the attention of the teacher.  Then the teacher tells me he does not want to see my calculator out again

Take this particular calc away and take another one out of your bag. Each time I do that, they give up :P
(They mostly give up because I only use my calcs outside of the class time except when I need to make a calculus) so they don't have a particular reason to ban my calcs since I use them reasonably)

My math teacher once tried to ban me from using my 84+ during class, even though it was the required calculator for the class, and I was only calculating stuff x.x
But yeah, at my old school, people's minds were blown with a Snake game I slapped together in about 15 min for a friend :P

People always ask me if I can get WIFI on my Nspire CX CAS.

When they see the color screen they are usually like "What is that?  Is that a calculator?" Then I say yea and give it to them then they are all like "And it has a mouse!?".

Then when I play Pokemon on it they usually react with a "You can play Pokemon on your calculator!?" .  It's pretty fun amazing people.  Thanks everyone for the awesome programs. :)

You can with an adapter...

All 6 of my teachers support me programming on my calcs so when I'm on it in class they don't care ^_^

You can with an adapter...

Having the TI-Nspire Navigator System craddle doesn't say you have access to internet (most common sense for "having WiFi").
In fact, if the host doesn't have a certain program launched in order to make a proxy between internet and the nspire (software that is not official but requires official stuff), you can't have internet.

Here, WiFi is just a protocol that TI has chosen in order to have a communication between a teacher and its students.

I do not believe I implied that at all. I merely suggest making an adaptor and necessary programs be possible. I failed to communicate properly from lack of usable time on my hands.

Yeah, why not? It'ss only made for about a 100 times more pixels (if talking about the Nspire), and it uses touch. That certainly is a wonderful idea :)

The RT version is made for ARM processors, the same es the Nspire, so theoretically I think it should be compatible :) size and ram not included of course..
