Title: The return of my files on ticalc.org
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 11, 2010, 02:25:13 am
Tonight marks the slow return of my calculator games to ticalc.org archives.

As some of you might remember or have heard about, Omnimaga community went through hard times in 2006 and 2007, due to rivalry with some other community members who were banned for trolling, who wanted to tarnish Omnimaga reputation (they saw troll banning as an attack against freedom of speech and a form of dictatorship, thus, tried to discourage new TI community members from signing up and encourage established members to leave). In late 2007, I promised that if they ever successfully triggered Omnimaga demise, I would also pull all my contributions from ticalc.org. At this point, I felt that after everything I done for the TI community, both programming-wise and by providing a site like Omnimaga, I did not deserve to be treated this way, and since most of the active members back then seemed on the haters side and that there was a general hate towards large games, I felt the community no longer deserved my files.

Then came New Year 2008, and the same day, Omnimaga demise, at a point where it seemed the entire Omnimaga staff turned against us. The same night, I sent a file deletion request at ticalc.org. It was awnsered on April 23rd 2008, then all my calc files were gone from ticalc.org archives. Only the news articles featuring ROL3, Zelda DLQ, Reuben Quest, XXR and Metroid II remains.

Here is what my ticalc profile looked like a few months before dissapearing:
http://web.archive.org/web/20071227065648/http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/authors/78/7864.html

That day, I promised myself that my files would only return in ticalc.org archives once the damages caused to Omnimaga from 2006 to 2008 would be repaired: the old Omnimaga board database would have to be restored and if Omnimaga ever resurrected, its activity would need to be back to the 2006 or late 2007 levels.

Finally, the damages caused to Omnimaga were not repaired, but they were patched, patched so well that in the end, Omnimaga became a better thing than it was back in the days. In other words, if anybody wanted Omnimaga to die, he shot himself in the foot: in long term, it simply backfired. Now Omnimaga has higher activity than the old site ever had, even if the total community activity is still half what it was years ago, 3 times more active members and is friendlier.

That and the fact the TI community seems to be more together again instead of against each others like back then finally convinced me to put my files back up on ticalc.org.

Technically, I was supposed to start reuploading everything two weeks ago, but then the Will_W incidents occured, followed later with a spam attack on the site, then a few other stuff. So I told myself they would wait one more week or two. Now it's time for me to reupload my stuff.

So tonight, the uploading has started: Axe Tunnel v1.1 was uploaded there. This update comes with a Ion, Mirage, Doors and no-stub copy of the game and a few other changes.

In a few days, I will also upload some of my old RPGs there. This time, Illusiat series will be separated by games instead of being uploaded in one zip file. I am not sure if all my games will be included, though, since some are kinda crappy.

Especially since the initiative about starting #ti channel, and what I've seen there so far, I feel the TI community in general has become more sane than it was back in 2006-08, even if activity, after reaching a bottom low in 2008, still hasn't come back to at least 2007 levels.

I doubt they will rise to the level they were back then, though, except maybe Zelda, because back then, 6 of the files made ticalc front page (and were in the featured list). Especially for ROL3 and XXR, this really boosted downloads when they were initially uploaded. Not to mention ticalc receives less traffic it did back then.

But again, now that files are sorted by categories, maybe it will be easier to find the RPGs.

You're Kevin Ouellet? Ah, I remember seeing your games...

Yeah I am. Hopefully also my profile return should help me not be taken as a different person than under the Kevin Ouellet name. I noticed some people recently thought I was somebody else. I finally figured out on ticalc how to change the name that shows under my files so that might help a bit too. :P

A lot of my stuff was released from 2001 to 2005, though.

Very happy news to ticalc archives. Will the links from the news and feature be given again?
And about the crappy programs, some possibilities are remake them, upload all as in a single zip for nostalgia reasons (in ticalc there already exist zip archives with a mess of old programs) or leave them RIP.

I took a bit too to discover who was Kevin Oullet. I think I got the relation in a Metroid game along with CDI.

For the first thing, I am not certain about this. I would need to ask a staff, because since I requested the removal of my files myself, which required them to do a lot of work (managing ticalc archives is apparently a major hassle. If I remember, it's done via command prompt or another terminal.), maybe they will not want to re-feature them. THey would also need to edit the site so the featured page shows the files at their original feature month, not in 2010.

I think they should do it, if they can.  You're games were featured, so just because they were "down" for a bit means that they can still be featured, right? :)

Well, here they are now:

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/authors/108/10862.html

All readmes were updated to show the current Omnimaga URL instead of omnimaga.dyndns.org (which was hacked in 2008) and omnimaga.tk, which we didn't use for 6 years. I even saw omnimaga.cjb.net and omnimaga.earthforge.com somewhere x.x

Later I will most likely update the files on Omni too, altough it wouldn't make much difference about the URL since the person would know Omnimaga URL already :P

I can re-add the links to the files in the news articles (though it would help if someone could give me the URLs to all of the articles since I didn't keep track of them). I can't really re-add the “featured program” flag for now, though, because the interface just sets it to the current date and doesn't let me choose the proper one. I think I'd have to edit the database directly to change that, and I don't yet know how to do that (assuming I have access to do so).

Aaaah I see, I guessed it probably required some database editing and it must be an hassle. I tried editing the board database on my site a few times and it can be rather hectic x.x

For the news articles, here are the links:

The Reign Of Legends 3 & Zelda: Dark Link Quest: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/11/119/119577.html
Reuben Quest: Ev Awakening: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/12/122/122186.html

Metroid II: Evolution: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/13/139/139347.html

Btw for the POTY polls and results, the files are still listed.

That seems to be the only file I released that is gone. It was on the old Omnimaga site and ticalc.org, but then the site closed and I took my ticalc profile down after community issues (see earlier posts). When the new Omni website opened, somehow I seem to have forgotten to upload it or it accidentally got deleted. And the old UTI space is gone since at least one year.

Thankfully the loss is not that huge, though. Illusiat 11: Kin Master Quest is a modified version of Illusiat 11 which features harder enemies. However I forgot to lower the experience that increased due to the enemy level increase and I would have liked to update it. It also had a different title screen.

This is dedicated to momrocker, smmagic, _player1537, Souvik1997 and a few others that have tried to cause me harm in the past month, specifically the narrow-minded ones that did no effort to not start trouble, but specifically _player1537 and Souvik in particular for their Omnimaga bashing in #cemetech and betrayal tonight, as I thought they were fine and even if not close friend, still liked each others:

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/authors/108/10862.html

This should give you a 404 error. The following is a screenshot of what was located there until a few minutes ago:

Don't bother going in Omnimaga download section to try to find them, as they're gone from there too.

Happy, now?

Oh no, DJ_O, I am so saddened by what has happened in the last few months. After all that hard work and that promise to put those files back up.

...smmagic? Really? i didn't know and i haven't been in sync with what's been happening. I'm speechless.... but i guess the number of people teaming up against omnimaga, it's quite different to what...[loss for words].

There are people out there like that i'm afraid. some may repent and become a better person. others, don't care. or even worse, try to hide it.
I have given you respect for that. Everyone needs the opportunity to express reasonable feelings of frustration sometimes.
Just know that there are still many members out there all supporting you from all the community.

I didn't realise it but there are nearly 900 members now! in about 6 months (october 2010) the number has jumped at least 1.5 times! I guess it's the quality of members not quantity of members

What I don't understand is how several bad members can bring down many good members.  We should just show them how Omnimaga is really supposed to work, and if they don't like it, wave them good bye.
@Everyone:  When you know a member is trolling just to troll, ignore what they say and take it with a grain of salt.  Although I can understand how a betrayal must feel...

So basically the plan is to mention Cemetech every time you start a thread about why you're unhappy at Souvik, Tanner, and the others? I don't think I like that plan too much.
Title: Re: The return of my files on ticalc.org

Well the issue is that the last events occured there and it is something that occured 3 times within the recent months (from what two people reported to me), and I was pissed last night. I am sorry if it seems like I am badmouthing cemetech as a whole for this, it is not my intention, although until recently I avoided doing that and it seemed pretty one-sided, as I remembered it happening in Cemetech too.

EDIT: Also for the file removal I would like to point out that this was planned for a few weeks now, ever since the giant upsurge in bad events on IRC. Travis received the request on March 13th, although he replied via e-mail and it landed in my spam folder, so I didn't realize until he told me he already replied.

It's not his fault it happened on #cemetech.  While I'm sure 99% of cemetech's users (including you of course) are clean and awesome, there are those who dislike omni, I looked at the IRC and once or twice there were people bashing omnimaga.

However DJ, I don't like your decision.  One way to show you're better than them is by staying strong and keeping the files, and ignoring them -- if they really wanna talk trash about your site, then they're just trash themselves.  And you shouldn't show any upsetness from trash.

the thing is, DJ, I think by doing what you did showed weakness to those who were trying to dropkick your emotions.  While I know you can get moody at times and make rash decisions (like many other normal people, myself included) showing weakness will just make these trash people snicker.  I say however there is still time to preserve your pride.  Just repost the files, and simply state to the trashy people that you'd rather just leave omnimaga's administration rather than put up with their stench.

But if you choose not, those of us who do know you as a proud and great person will always remember you as one of (and perhaps the biggest) the TI community's great contributors.  To tell the truth, I'll side with you no matter your choice, you're a good person who would rather take pain than inflict it on others, and a much bigger contributor than all of the people slamming you.  So, to whatever your final choice will be, cheers to your good decision in advance.  I'm still loyal to you, despite the trouble I sometimes cause you (of which I hope you can forgive me for).

I have to agree as well. Plus, your files are a great part of TI-BASIC gaming history. Without them, it wouldn't be the same.

I understand your concern, but the removal of my file was planned for a few weeks already and I really had enough. I know it sounds like I am surrendering to trolls but they do not deserve these files, and I want to see improvement before putting them back up. However, even then, ticalc is gonna get tired of redeleting my files only to put them back up later. I think now it's over. I need a year or two to clean my mind from what happened in the past 2 weeks and also the past months and see how things goes. The files may return on Omni earlier, but for now they're gone.

I would also prefer to not be emailed for the files. I'll not reply. I only answer requests on a volunter basis and it's not even guaranted I'll remain active.

I can see how you are feeling, DJ, and why you did what you did on ticalc.org. If those trolls decided to bash omnimaga on cemetech, I can see why you would want to get them back by taking off your files. My only problem with what you did is that you hurt thousands of happy customers in the process. Many people loved your Basic games, and they are a true legacy for everyone, looking nothing short of beautiful. By taking them off, you may or may not have hurt the trolls, but you have also hurt many, many more innocent people. Also, these users on Omnimaga might evaluate your actions and feel that you are too rash and unstable for their liking (what will he do to our following, our reputation?) and take their business to your competitors, which is exactly what the trolls wanted.
And the trolls are probably sitting at their computers hundreds of miles away, smugly, silently, sinisterly laughing.

Also, could I get the #cemetech chat logs so that I can read what the trolls said?
Title: Re: The return of my files on ticalc.org
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 17, 2011, 04:52:18 pm
Well the thing is that the two people in question are not trolls, they are legitimate Cemetech contributors that unfortunately happened to be careless on the recent issue, if not selfish. Out of anger, I was unnecesarrily rude to them afterward, and I am sorry about that (and my Cemetech bashing that ensued for the same reason afterward), but it will take me several months before I recover from it.

As for my file removal, if you haven't noticed, about 90% of the new users we got in the past months were troublesome users or users that barely do any effort to respect other people. Although to a lower extent for the second category, that's the kind of people that I think that don't deserve access to my files, and sadly, they form the majority of the current generation of TI gamers. In other words, not many good users will be affected by this, especially that most already played the games long ago. My files will be back in a certain form here eventually, but outside Omni it's gonna be like in 2008, during the last wave of troublesome/careless users.

On a side note, if you never checked my profile on ticalc.org, it's not like my games were even downloaded that much anymore anyway: Most got about 1-3 downloads a week at most, the only one that had at least 10 were Zelda DLQ and Axe Tunnel. Given the amount of bots online these days and the fact the same person might download dozens of files at once, I have serious doubts this will make much difference in short term. Maybe it's just me, but after everything I did for the community without bad intentions, I feel I did not deserve the crap from a bunch of people lately, and this is my response to this.

For #cemetech logs you can maybe ask in there, but I am unsure if people are allowed to give someone logs without Kerm's permission. However, unlike a certain 68k TI programmer that got banned from yAronet, I doubt Kerm would have similar issues as him with logs distribution.

As i have mentioned in other topics this is true that there are many new members on omnimaga, i think too many compared to only 550 members last year. There are too many noobs out on the internet these days and it is unfortunate that many of them have turned to omnimaga and other calc sites for their attacks.
The new decade brings a new generation of TI-calc gamers, and unfortunately they are people who don't care about real contributions and hard work.
Just hope that omnimaga won't shut down after this.
Anyway it is all your choice.

Oh actually I meant logs from other users. Most IRC clients have a logging feature that can be enabled (sometimes enabled by default), which stores channel conversations on your computer. However, some IRC channels disallows their users from making these personal logs publicly available. Some do, but disallows logs from being searchable through Google, like #ti channel, and some channels have no log publishing policies, like #omnimaga or #inspired.

You could always maybe ask one of the person that idles there if they got logs, although it would be a good idea to keep those logs for personal use in case. That said, they have a quote site somewhere (with funny quotes) and sometimes people posted some in the Omni quotes thread, so they are most likely not as strict as that one 68K IRC channel on Freequest, where if you got caught posting one single word quote from the channel in public elsewhere, you got permanently banned.
