Title: TI-Nspire rant
Post by: Netham45 on April 10, 2007, 03:30:00 am
Well... Lets start here.

http://www.ti-nspire.com/tools/nspire/features/84_compat.html

"Operate the TI-Nspire handheld, with TI-84 Plus Keypad snapped in, side-by-side and keystroke-for-keystroke with existing TI graphing calculators. (The TI-Nspire CAS handheld does not include the TI-84 Plus Keypad.)" -- wtf?

"*The TI-84 Plus Keypad is not included or compatible with the TI-Nspire CAS handheld." -- haha!

"The TI-Nspire CAS handheld does not include the snap-in TI-84 Plus Keypad, which is compatible exclusively with the TI-Nspire handheld."(http://www.ti-nspire.com/tools/nspire/features/nspire_cas.html) -- HIPOCRITS!(sp?)

"TI Connect™ software. You can still transfer data back-and-forth between handheld and computer. Capture graphing calculator screen images and download StudyCards, operating system updates, software applications (Apps) and more. Simply link to the computer using the TI-84 Plus Keypad's I/O port." -- wait, so they basically put an 84 in this 'keypad' and they're using the Nspires display? Im scared.

This just looks stupid. I mean, WTF?! it's not compatable. It's compatable. :wacko:triso2.gif

Im scared.

Umm, hello? Was your brain not working when you wrote this?

The CAS software takes up the available memory that the 84+ emulation gives. It says that plain as day in there. They are releasing 2 calculators.

So why did you make this post?? And why is it in the calculator discussion, if you are just going to "rant" about it??

You have to start your brain before you engage your mouth/fingers.  As Dan said, it clearly states different models, the TI-NSpire and the TI-NSpire CAS.  The CAS version has a CAS but no 84+ support, while the non-CAS version trades the CAS for an 84+ keyboard and support.

So go for CAS model if you're interested in buying/developing?  I guess we'll have to wait and see...

yeah, what were to you thinking when you posted this? There are two versions of the hardware, one with CAS, one without.

Which I guess means that all current programs for the Z80 shall work on the non-cas version. Sweet move from TI.

This may mean they could rewrite the OS to support basic eventually, but as of now. No programming what so ever.

This kind of sucks. I'm not going to buy it now.  <_<dry.gif

same here, but from what i seen this calc seems to be meant more for teachers atm

Yea but even when I was in public school the teachers would help you write programs for math class, I even taught a class once on programming calcs while I was in middle school.

(the teachers asked me to come in during my normal math class a few times and kind of lecture and step by step help the students build the math programs.)

true, this suck a lot that you cant even make your math program for the nspire yet

YOU can make math functions but they can only output numbers they can't interface with either the home or graph screen. the functions are set up like on the 89/92/v200

Lame. Pure and simple. What was TI thinking? They sparked a whole programming community with their products in the past. What's up with this move?

from what i read on ti nspire page they are not planning on discontinuing the 68k and z80 series so thats a good thing, they're just adding the nspire to their production lines. I hope people will not quit buying 84+/89t tho

Something tells me the Nspire won't sell very well after the first few months. Though there will always be the people who assume the newest calculator is the best calculator and rush to buy it.
Are there any online petitions to give the Nspire programmability in the next OS yet?
Title: TI-Nspire rant

Idk, but if it doesnt sell well maybe if people tell them they should add programming (maybe they'll add apps support that allow programming basic/running assembly?) maybe they'll do

Since the TI-Nspire is such a new product, some of the features of previous calculators were left off, such as programming. As more development is done, Texas Instruments will continue to update the operating system and add more advanced programming to the TI-Nspire.

For some reasons I believe TI is not trying to make calc gaming fade away from calcs. It would be contradictory since they intended to make some TI-BASIC commands from older calcs usable in calc games (even though the language was slow a**)

But my TI manual date back in early 2001 (and it seems to be 1999 edition) so it has been a long while since they said this

^.^ indeed.  besides, TI probably has one of the strongest dev communities (for games ^.^) among graphing calcs.  although it seems to have broadened to so much more in the past few years (emus, more assemblers, etc).

ook thats good to hear at least. But I thought TI only distributed the small 3-40 page-ish manual with their calcs after the 83+SE was released?

83+, which are still being sold around here, still have the paper manuals to what I have seen. The new calcs all come with CDs.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 02, 2007, 06:36:00 am
ah ok. I know the SE comes with a very small manual though and my 89t came with a 300 page manual with explained details, altough it sucks compared to the original 60-800 page TI-89 manual

my ti 84+se came with a 216 page manual. and no it doesn't say anything about getkey for games.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 02, 2007, 07:59:00 am
ok I guess new calcs doesnt come with the quick starter guide but an actual manual. It sucks they shrinked it down that much though, because the info about programming is very limited in it. I actually learned TI-BASIC only from my big TI-83+ manual, nothing else, not even tutorials

^^ Same here, except I have the regular 83 manual, not the +. If I had to guess, I'd say it has close to 400 pages.

I'm sure it is more, it's hard to count tho since the page numerisation is divided per chapters instead of being continous, like the new manuals

Yeah, me too.

It's annoying how the old manuals like 83+ are not numbered as in 1-400. Grouping by sections is OK, but I would also prefer page numbers.

And I think the new N-spire are supposed to be anti-gaming. I guess teachers are tired of kids playing games in class, so TI hopes that a lack of programming will stop game developers. But that won't stop us right  :Ptongue.gif ? The SDK should be released soon...

Will I be able to write programs on the TI-Nspire products? If so, what is the programming language? Will a software developer's kit be available?
Currently, there are some programming capabilities (specifically function and program definition) on TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS. Increased programming functionally will be available in an operating system release expected to be available for download in early 2008. The programming language is TI-Basic. Be sure to update your handheld's operating systems regularly to receive these and other enhancements to functionality.

I thought you'd find this interesting, I found it on the Ti-Nspire website. I was just curious to see if they had announced anything about it's programming capabilities.

This looks pretty promising. :)smile.gif
