Title: Tutorial: TI connect is not working
Post by: thepenguin77 on August 29, 2011, 10:16:50 am
This is a guide for people for whom TI-Connect is not working, TI-Connect can't find their calculator, TI-Connect is giving strange error messages, TiLP screwed up your TI-connect setup, or TI-Connect is just not working correctly via USB with their 83+, 84+, or their 84+SE / 84+ Silver Edition on Windows XP, Window Vista, or Windows 7.

(Enough key words)

First and foremost, you have to realize that TI-Connect errors mean nothing. What the error says, and what actually went wrong are usually completely different.

Here are the things to try if you get an error message:

On a side note, when it asks you to select a cable, if you are using usb, none of those are the correct choice, so you'll just have to wait for your calculator to show up.

If none of this works, then it's time to have some fun. At any point during the following list you can stop to see if it works, just remember that you'll have to redo all of the previous steps if it doesn't work.

Almost flawless fix method:
1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Devices>Device Manager)
2. Plug your calculator into a usb port that you know you've plugged it into before.
3. Find your calculator on the Device Manager list, usually under LibUSB devices
4. Right click>Uninstall
5. Repeat 2-4 for any USB port you may have plugged your calculator into.
6. Uninstall TI-Connect through windows
7. If you are on a 32 bit operating system go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\ and delete libusb0.sys. (It's a driver)
If you are on a 64 bit operating system, I've never had to delete the drivers, but they are: silvrlnk.sys and tiehdusb.sys.
8. Experimental (though, unlikely to break anything): If you have previously installed TiLP, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\LPG Shared\drivers\usb\ and delete anything with a .inf extension.
9. Restart your computer
10. Reinstall TI-Connect

And it should work. If it doesn't work, you probably have something else going on since this basically removes all traces of TI-Connect. It will even make TI-Connect work after you've installed TiLP. At this point, you should probably start a topic on this website explaining your problem. (Don't contact TI Cares as they are absolutely no help)

If you are going to be using TI-Connect a lot, you might want to think about buying a Silver Link cable. You can find them at BestBuy for around $15 (at least you used to be able) and they are much more reliable than direct USB. One end of the cable plugs into your usb port, and the other plugs into the I/O port on the calculator.

A final note about why changing your batteries fixes almost 90% of cases. The TI-84 was designed to run on 3.3V, this means when you batteries are low, they are down around 3.4V. But, USB will accept a voltage no lower than 5V. See the problem? If your calculator is running at 4V, it will be perfectly content and tell you that your batteries are fully charged, but when you go to use USB, it's not going to work at all and TI-Connect will give you "Error: Access Denied" or similar.

Rechargeable batteries have also cause a lot of troubles in the past because of the whole 5V issue. Rechargeable batteries don't always charge to the same voltage as standard alkaline and this means that even fully charged batteries may not work.

Update 4/16/2013
I believe (though currently untested) that if you get the error where TI-Connect asks you to locate libusb0.sys, you can solve it by deleting TiLP's .inf files. (Step 8 ) The exact wording on this error is:

The file "libusb0.sys" on TI-84 Plus USB Device Install Disk is needed
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Also, since they are really hard to find, here is a TI-Connect driver download, with tiehdusb.sys and silvrlink.sys in a zip.

Amazing.  This works, I used an older version of this before, and I never had problems fixing TI-Connect again.  ;)

Wow awesome Thepenguin77! So many people got troubles with it so hopefully it helps. I even remember cases of project stoppage due to TI-Connect.

1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Devices>Device Manager)
2. Plug your calculator into a usb port that you've know plugged it into before.
3. Find your calculator on the Device Manager list, usually under LibUSB devices
4. Right click>Uninstall
5. Repeat 2-4 for any USB port you may have plugged your calculator into.
6. Uninstall TI - Connect
8. Restart your computer
9. Reinstall TI - Connect

this can be way easier as i made a tutorial for this fix already i just placed it in the wrong place >.<

Don't forget to add that OSX Lion stops functionality of Ti-Connect (The newest version at least, 1.8 ) being able to communicate with calcs, or at least to TI84+BE models. :'(

It might be of use to someone

But thanks for the tut!

By easier do you mean fewer steps? Because each of the steps in the process has a reason, (I've actually had to do every step individually.)

Quote
1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Devices>Device Manager)
2. Plug your calculator into a usb port that you've know plugged it into before.
3. Find your calculator on the Device Manager list, usually under LibUSB devices
4. Right click>Uninstall
5. Repeat 2-4 for any USB port you may have plugged your calculator into.

This set fixes any misassociations that windows has made about the calculator. This happens when either you 1) plug in the calculator before installing ti-connect, 2) install/uninstall TiLP, 3) have Ti-Connect just quit on you.

Without this step, the operating system won't even try to search for a better driver.

Quote
6. Uninstall TI - Connect
9. Reinstall TI - Connect

Sometimes you just need to start over so TI-Connect can make all of it's file and driver associations again. This step also prepares for 7.

Quote

This is probably the most important step out of all of them. If you install TiLP, then install Ti-Connect, this is precisely the step you have to do. What happens is that TI made a proprietary version of a public driver (libusb0.sys) and the installer assumes that if the driver is present, it is correct. However, if you install TiLP then install Ti-Connect, it is the wrong driver and TI-Connect won't work.

This step has saved me and others several times and is now the reason I have no fear installing TiLP.

Quote
8. Restart your computer

I don't know this is completely necessary, but it's a good idea nonetheless.

Edit:
I also figure out it's TI-Connect, not TI - Connect

PLEASEEEEEEE Help Me!!!!

I have been coding programs for my TI-84+ SE Calculator... I then saw this program called TiLP2... I thought it would be nice to have so I downloaded it... Now, I am unable to connect my calculator to TI-Connect... I have performed the above steps a total of 3 times now... and still it doesn't work...

The problem is, it keeps trying to install the driver as a libusb-win32 device... I have deleted libusb0.sys and still no success... So I uninstalled, and reinstalled... No success... I then attempted to have ONLY TI-Connect installed... Yet for some odd reason, even thought I do NOT have TiLP2 or libusb-win32 installed, it STILL tries to install it as a libusb-win32 device

Why is this? and how can I fix this?!!! PLEASE HELP ME! THANK YOU!!!!

I already emailed you, but like I said (and for future googlers, yes, you) I now have a tutorial (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=76) in my signature that should hopefully fix your problems.

Actually it's typical for uploaded tutorials to just include a copy in your first post or parts of it, since just a non-bolded link might not be as visible :P (In fact for older tutorials, a PHP code is used to fetch the content directly from a post, so the author just updates his forum post and his tutorial gets updated in the tutorials section as well)

Does TI-Connect work with the Ti-83 Plus Silver Edition? I followed your tutorial but it didn't work.

Welcome here Sym Undin. Yes, TIconnect does work with the TI-83+ Silver Edition. The easiest fix is usually fresh batteries. TI-connect doesn't like to work well if your batteries are low, or if you use rechargeables (they have lower voltage).

Ok, a question for people who know a lot about TiLP on 32 bit systems. Where are the .inf files stored? CalicoZac's problem was that he didn't delete the old .inf's and for whatever reason, they were overriding the Ti-Connect ones (in hindsight, I think this is because he used some power uninstaller on TiLP).

But, the problem where you get "locate libusb0.sys" is definitely caused by those .inf files remaining.

In other news, since it is hard as hell to find, I'm going to link and attach for download a zip with tiehdusb.sys and silvrlnk.sys in it. It's off of TI's web site, but, unless you try really hard, you'll never find it.

(Awkward wording above was to try to match people's searches on google)

I tried changing batteries before I even tried the tutorial Art_of_camelot, but neither worked. Could it be my computer?

That doesn't seem to likely, but I guess it's possible. What cable are you using, and what happens when you open TI-connect with the calculator plugged in?

I'm using the cord that came with my calculator. When I plug it in and try to put files on the calculator with TI-Connect, under destination it says 'Incompatible Type'. I have no idea what that means.

Ok, so you are using this cable(see attached picture)? Your calculator is showing up in TI connect correct? What are you trying to send to it?

Yeah, that's the cord. I'm trying to send over a game called Portal Prelude.

The files you are trying to send over are Portal.8Xk and PortalPK.8Xv correct? Is your version of TI connect up to date?

I just downloaded TI-Connect like, last week, so it should be up to date.

I'm not sure what the exact files are called, and I don't think TI-Connect detects my calculator at all. Could this be a problem with the cable? I've never tried to use the cable before this, it's just sat in the packaging for years.

Edit(Eeems): Merged double post

Is this for a Mac or Windows OS? My TI-Connect on my Mac has being iffy at best.

If its a Mac open TI Device Explorer and then plug in your USB side first in your comp and then the other end into you calc. You should see your device pop up in TI Device Explorer. If it doesnt show up right away try hitting the refresh button in TI Device Explorer.

If your using Windows open Ti-Connect. Follow the same steps above for hooking up the cables. Then open TI Device Explorer and it should pop up a window where it will try to find a device to connect to. If you have done this before it might just go right to the TI Device Explorer screen without the little pop up. In that case you will see your device listed, with a bunch of sub-options, such as Screen Image, Device Settings and Flash/Archive. If you arent seeing this, you probably have to install the driver for TI-Connect.

Is this tutorial still valid for TI-Connect 4.0 by the way? I know that it doesn't work for Mallrd for the TI-73 but this might have been an issue with past versions as well. Just wondering if stuff broke or if everything is still fine?
