Title: UnSS Contest
Post by: Eeems on May 07, 2009, 11:29:38 am
I hope nobody minds, but UnSS is having a puzzle contest that started today, and I was just wondering if anybody wanted to join
here  (http://unsyntaxsoft.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=714)is the link to the topic if you want to learn more
EDIT:we have extended the contest end date by one week, just so you know.

Now if only there was a RPG contest ;.;

but still nice though, hoping it won't break competition in Omnimaga contest too much though. Even if Omni is the 2nd most active TI forum out here there's still much fewer programmers and newcomers anywhere these years so two contests running at once could cause one of them or even both to receive like one or two entry, if it receives any at all. This is not to mention there will most likely be a Cemetech contest anytime soon (since there are contest regulary there these days) and possibly a zContest 2009 on yAronet z80 TI forums too. Hopefully this can still spur some activity coding-wise, though, thus, more games.

Sorry if I sound a bit scared about the second contest idea though, I just still have bad memories of the TI-Freakware contest incident in 2006 x.x

What happened?

EDIT: Oh yeah, there is a contest starting up on TIBasic developer too :D

The program challenges aren't really full-blown contests though.

Sure they are!  You get to win and everything! ;)

Well what I meant are really major contests such as ours, TI-FW in 2006 and UTI contests. I could classify UnSS one in that too.

About what happened with TI-FW contest, right before summer 2006 we started brainstorming for ideas about a possible Omnimaga programming contest. We even had polls about what could be the contest and stuff, but we offered no prizes. What happened is that the day we finished planning the contest, Tifreakware announced a programming contest that was exactly the same than our idea, except that there were material prizes, which killed Omnimaga contest project. At that time, Tifreak was Omnimaga staff so he had full access to the staff forums. I'm unsure if this was intentional but it was sure rather ironic and strange.

Either way, I'm thinking that this contest would be a good contest to submit Portal 2 to.  ;D

sounds like a good idea, let me look at the rules to see if you can submit it, because you have already announced it, but you haven't entered it into any other contest yet.
Quote from: UnSS Contest Rules
Participating in a Contest

    * No Used Entries - You may NOT submit an entry that was previously submitted in another contest.
    * No Teaming - Unless otherwise specified, you may not submit entries created through collaboration with other people.
    * No Stealing - Obviously, do NOT submit someone else's work.
    * Be Punctual Within Reason - When a contest ends, the thread will be locked with a final post saying the contest has ended. You may not submit your work beyond then. Any entry emails received afterwards will probably be discarded (unless the judges feel really nice).
looks like you could :)

I agree. To be honest, I really do like these contests. It helps to spark a motivation in me which is usually hard to find.

For some reasons, I never really had the idea to participate to any contest before. Idk why. At first, it was mostly the contests not being the kind of game I like to work on and other times I either had other projects in the works I didn't want to stop or I was retired from calc programming. It's only recently I was interested in joining one contest, because it allowed any kind of game and allowed lib usage. However the contest never started. :< (I was gonna enter Illusiat 13)

YAY! that's great to hear. hope you can get something to enter.

Just to let you all know, as of tomorrow there is 2 weeks left in the contest
EDIT: oops I forgot, the 3rd not the 27th

So Portal II is too big of a game, so I am switching to a smaller and simpler puzzle game. :(
Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 25, 2009, 01:00:23 pm
well,

like Omnimaga contest, I think your game doesnt need to be finished if you submit it for UnSS contest. You can release bigger versions later afterward. I do hope everyone won't switch to UnSS contest, leaving us with no entry in August, tho, because it will be the last time Omnimaga ever organize a contest again.

This is not to mention the lack of respect toward us the two times we had programming contests started or in the planning, people tried to steal all our entries by starting their own contest or even steal our ideas right before or right after ours was gonna start

Else, if Omnimaga staff absolutely want to organize a contest in 2010 even if the current one got all its members/entries stolen, then I will add a new forum rules stating that members are no longer allowed to advertise a contest from another forum anymore.
Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: skuller972 on May 25, 2009, 01:12:13 pm
well the omnimaga contest is a platformer one, and i think the UnSS is a puzzle one, so i think that certain programmers like just one of those, so they'll pick the one they like
Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: Builderboy on May 25, 2009, 04:01:11 pm
I really don't like releasing half baked games, especialy because I would have to rush through finishing even half of it to get an incomplete version in.

And I am still doing the Platformer Contest.  Its due in August, so I have plenty of time to work on that one.

well if you enter portal II into the contest unfinished we wont release it untill you want us to. I wouldn't start a new program to enter if I were you we don't have that many days left (1 week on wednesday). You could just release a teaser game with different levels then the final one will have if you want.

ok, as of yesterday there is one week left in the contest, so get your programs finished people, and now is not the time to redo them all (not that I feel like anybody would)

What do u mean. Contests Stolen?
Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 30, 2009, 09:36:07 pm
Well if you meant UnSS it was more because only like 3 days after Omnimaga contest started, other contests started pouring in the community, the main other one being UnSS so I thought it would drain Omnimaga contest from most of its contestants (since people could turn their platformer into a puzzle game or an hybrid of platformer/puzzle

As for stolen contest idea I meant more TI-Freakware in 2006, as their contest started like the day after ours was about to start and was pretty much an exact copy of ours except we had no prizes, so it killed our contest. Back then some TI-FW admins were Omnimaga staff and had direct access to our ideas in the staff forum but I think at that time TI-Freakware was not very active so they were trying to get more members. I am unsure if there were bad intentions behind this but I didn't took it very lightly so I didn't organized a contest on Omnimaga until Noahbaby decided to do one recently

Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 30, 2009, 09:44:12 pm
Fortunately the fact ticalc posted a news about ours might help a bit in some ways to get more contestants. UnSS might get more last minute entries as well, as UnSS contest is advertised on Omnimaga, which is linked from ticalc.org directly on their front page. My only worry is that people might not have enough time to finish their entries x.x.

Lol, well I used to be a lot more active, though XD

On the old Omnimaga forums (that went down at the end of 2007) I had over 11000 posts to myself. Sometimes I had like 20-30 a day, altough this was nothing compared to Kalan_Vod and Spellshaper/Spelli, who had sometimes 70 a day

this is what i felt when i never saw Arcane Wizard post... again...T_T ..... very sad.
Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 30, 2009, 11:44:50 pm
Well actually Omnimaga reached 55100-55400 posts from what I remember. Here's the most recent archive.org cache that isn't screwed up by the anti-spambot mod we had at the time:
http://web.archive.org/web/20071021214343/omnimaga.org/index.php?act=idx
This is how Omnimaga looked like approximately until its demise on Jan 1st 2008

as for the reason why it shutted down it is explained both here (http://www.unitedti.org/index.php?showtopic=7551) and here (http://ourl.ca/2610), altough it doesn't really go into every details, such as how before the shut down haters managed to get almost the entire staff on their side, which lead to the site demise.

Afterward a few remaining members kept asking me to not permanently keep Omnimaga closed, so I started a temporarly board and submitted a board restoral request on Invisionfree. However I and most people took the board restoration for granted and since most people didn't want to post on the temp board since the old one would eventually return, they all gave up and we went down to like 1 post a day, sometimes 3 days without any post. Most staff and members stayed active on other boards instead, so it became clear that Omnimaga would not survive so I gave up on the site on March 3rd.

During the time we were on a small temporary board, some people from #tcpa launched spam attacks and 711chan/anon raids on the site and IRC channel. This caused most old staff to finally know what the troublemakers were up to and they returned on my side, but it was not enough to bring back activity on the temp site forever. This is not to mention most people didn't like the software used on the temporary board (Zetaboards) too much, altough it wasn't that bad IMHO, especially the PM system.

We stayed closed for half a year afterward and I had no intention to bring a new site back up. The IRC channel remained open, though, as well as the staff music files. In retaliation to what people did to us (mostly from #tcpa) I also requested my entire ticalc.org profile to be taken down on January 1st 2008. However it took ticalc.org 4 and half a months to awnser my request and they forgot to delete Metroid II Evolution and Illusiat series.

However in August 2008 people started to bug me non stop so I start a fresh new Omnimaga board. At first I was a bit relunctant about the idea, thinking people would give up posting after a month once again, but I finally decided to start a board anyway, but made it clear we were starting from scratch, so people won't think it's a temporary board. We opened in August 25th 2008 and officially told everyone on IRC on September 1st 2008, the day of Omnimaga 7th anniversary. However, we never actually announced the site re-opening to public on any other site afterward

Fortunately now things seems to go pretty well, we rarely ever get trolls and haters and we're active again. Plus, if the site ever closed for any reason again Netham does nightly backups so we can restore the database right away, something that was impossible with the old board, since we used a free forum hosting.

Omnimaga is still hated by some people because we're meant to be a forum free of any hostility. Unlike every other TI sites any provocative remarks or destructive comments on someone or his project can get you suspended in two or three shots. UTI has rules regarding respecting each others, but since about July or August, the moderators has been increasingly more lax so most bad behaviour is left unpunished. There are people who hate us because they see this as dictatorship, while in fact we're just trying to provide at least one environment where users can announce their new game in the works, regardless of if it's BASIC, ASM, 1 or 50 sub-programs, 1 or 500 KB, libs or not. There are several members from other TI forums, including some on United-TI and TI-BASIC Developper, that would probably not last long over here.

im happy you and your freinds rebuilt omnimaga. This has been really influencial, although wayyyyy off topic XDDD
*I don't get why people would hate this site becuz u guys are lax about criticism... i mean, usually people give constructive criticism.. and if they give destructive criticism, it means they are jelous XD.. and if u make a bad prgm anyways. it prolly means ur new *Like me!!!

Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 31, 2009, 01:21:42 am
@TI-Newb actually we're the opposite of lax about criticism :P we do promote constructive criticism (since it helps people improve) but we're obviously not promoting destructive comments. We never actually recovered from the site shut down, though, as some staff did a permanent move to other sites afterward and we lost a POTY award, not to mention we never got the average post counts a month of 2000-3000 we got on the old board again, but for some reasons we still managed to remain the 2nd most active TI site after UTI in daily post rate

ANyway back on the contest I hope it gets lot of entries :)

Personally, i think Ti Basic Developer Portal's policy on this should be applied...

Should Judgement Day arrive with only one entrant in the challenge, s/he will not win by default. Instead, Judgement Day will be postponed; Judgement Day is inevitable…

Winning by default is no fun... :(
Title: Re: UnSS Contest

Title: Re: UnSS Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 04, 2009, 10:47:21 pm
Yeah Maxcoderz did that back then (winning by default) with tr1p1ea. However his entry was friggin amazing and impressive that I think it would still have won even if another entry would have been entered. I think the main issue was that there were way too many contests at once and while this encourage people to program more, the entries gets spread between contests and often, it's the mini-competitions like on TI-BD forums that will get more, since they take less longer to make. I think the best thing would have been if the UnSS contest started about a month later and lasted as long as Omnimaga's or that the UnSS contest would have started right after Omnimaga contest ended (altough this might have been a big risk, since Cemetech or UTI could be planning one soon)

I would extend it by another 2 weeks. Not to mention some people haven't finished school and will not until the end of June x.x
