Title: Your calculator names
Post by: Deep Toaster on July 22, 2013, 07:45:45 pm
It seems a some of us have named our calculators, and those who have more than one might have a naming pattern for them.

I named my (plain black) TI-83 Plus during a phase when I was really into Greek mythology, so she (it?) ended up with the title of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_of_Troy). (...) As I got more calculators they were also named after roughly human Greek mythological figures. Casios get male names, TIs get female.

TI-83 Plus: Helen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_of_Troy)
TI-84 Pocket.fr: Calypso (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calypso_(mythology))
TI-Nspire CX CAS: Persephone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persephone)
Casio PRIZM: Hector (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hector)

How do you pick names for your calculators? Male/female? Common/rare names?

I didn't name my calculators but my new computer is called Jean-Frédérique II (Jean-Frédérique was my iMac), my iPod Touch's (2nd gen O.O) name is Pierre-Alain-Paul-Jacques. I call my Nexus 4 Pierre-Alain-Paul-Jacques Junior. :P
As you can see I gave them male names composed of cheesy french names, just for fun (my cousin calls his desktop Dagobert XD).

TI-83+ : Carly
TI-84+SE : Trixie
TI-76.fr : Lulii
Nspire CX CAS : Athéna
Casio Prizm : Alstroemeria
TI-84+CSE : Roxanna (Roxie)

The pattern I used : all z80 have a name terminated by the sound "ee" in some way (more accurate when pronouced by French people), and all color calcs have a name finished by a "a". Now the funny thing is the CSE.

Lol Deep Thought there's a french community member who use the Persephone nickname actually. Make sure you avoid confusion if you ever talk a lot about your calc on forums. :P

As for my calcs they have no name as well, although in my early days of programming, during long periods of debugging, I often called my 83+ and 83+SE "Ma tabarnack de caliss d'ostie d'vache" or some similar stuff, ready to throw it through a wall or something. :P

If you are talking about TI-Planet, I just wen through the member list and found no one named Persephone. Maybe you were confusing with Persalteas.

I think it's Planète-Casio or another site. I might have spelled it wrong, though, but it's not Persalteas.

Yeah that's french. I don't really understand it but that's probably some funny swearing he came up with. :P

It's Quebec French slang actually. It can't be translated literally, but in English it would basically mean "F***ing piece of s***" :P

I kinda figured it was something like that. :P It's funny that Google translate choked on it and was like "what the heck is this! ???".

"La noire" for the Prizm ("the black one"), "la bleue" for my AFX 2.0 ("the blue one" Graph 100), "la Game Boy" ofr the Nspire ("le jeu de garçons").

I just call it "Mijn grafisch rekenmachien" (="my graphing calc"), or, when it's clear that I'm talking abouth the calc, "da ding" (="That thing")

"la bleue" for my AFX 2.0 ("the blue one" Graph 100)
Butbutbut... The blue one is Yeong !

Also lol, I didn't call my CX CAS "GameBoy" but the GameBoy was the only reason why I bought it.
